Budget Travel Names New Publisher

Michael Carroll has been named publisher of Arthur Frommer’s Budget Travel. Carroll was the former director of multimedia advertising sales at The Wall Street Journal.  He joined the newspaper in 2006, as director of travel and tourism advertising sales.

Beginning today, Carroll assumes his new duties with Budget Travel.  Those responsibilities include overseeing the magazine’s worldwide advertising sales and marketing efforts. He will report directly to Nancy Telliho, president of Budget Travel.

“Michael is a highly respected member of the advertising and travel communities and he brings Budget Travel a rare client-side perspective on our business,” Telliho said.

Carroll joins the most recent expansion of new hires including Lisa Schneider, who joins as the digital general manager; Robert Perino, as art director; Laura Michonski, as the deputy online editor; and Angelo Lombardo, who joins as the New York advertising account executive.

“I’m thrilled to lead a travel magazine that inspires real action – not just day dreaming – among its audience,” Carroll said. “The passion of our loyal fan base serves our advertising partners well.”

New Hires and Blog Launches at Portfolio.com

gggportfoliaa.gifLooks like Portfolio.com is kicking back into gear. Jeff Bercovici is reporting that the site, which took some hits last fall amidst the Conde layoffs, and recently lost big name financial blogger Felix Salmon to a Reuters startup, has made some new hires.

To begin they have brought Ryan Avent on board to fill Salmon’s spot. Aven has been writing The Economist‘s Free Exchange blog for the past two years.

On the blog front they are adding The Weiss File, which will be written by Portfolio contributing editor and author Gary Weiss. “Weiss will peel the lid off some of the less-savory practices of Wall Street and Corporate America, and still give atta-boys when deserved.” Also, there will be a new business-travel blog, which wil be called Itineraries and be written by Portfolio.com’s deputy editor, J. Jennings Moss.

On the business (and magazine) side, Michael Carroll has been named National Sales Director of Conde Nast Portfolio. Carroll joins Portfolio from The Wall Street Journal where he most recently he served as Director, Multimedia Advertising Sales, specializing in luxury goods and financial services.
