Website Connects Darwin Bestseller to Intelligently Designed Media Campaign

The Discovery Institute, a Seattle-based organization that bills itself as “the intellectual home of the modern intelligent design movement,” is celebrating this morning. All because the book Darwin’s Doubt is set to debut at #7 on this Sunday’s New York Times non-fiction bestsellers list.

After applauding the NYT for a “remarkably accurate” plot synopsis of Stephen Meyer‘s new book, David Klinghoffer, a senior fellow with the Center for Science and Culture (CSC), explains that there are no missing media links. Good old-fashioned promo-ing was an important part, he writes, of the bestseller momentum:

Dr. Meyer has been on The Michael Medved Show several times, on the The Dennis Prager Show, The Dennis Miller Show and many other national and local talk-radio programs. Not trivial either is the decision by Barnes & Noble to feature the book with in-store displays in 300 of its bookstores across the country, likely due in part to the strong sales record of Meyer’s first book, Signature in the Cell.

Vegas Radio Personality Hopes to Have LA ‘Answer’

This week, KRLA 870 AM operates under the slogan “Intelligent. Conservative. Talk Radio.” and offers Glenn Beck weekday mornings from 6am to 9am. But that will change next week when Las Vegas radio personality Heidi Harris takes over his slot while the station as a whole gets rechristened as “The Answer.”

Owner Salem Communications, which did a similar re-branding trick recently with WNYM 970 AM in New York City, is folding both KRLA and Inland Empire sister station KTIE 590 AM under this new “Answer” umbrella. For Harris, it’s a move to a major market after a rather unusual start thirteen years ago in Sin City. From the press release:

Harris was first heard on the air on KDWN in Las Vegas in 1998 during the Monica Lewinsky scandal, when she volunteered to go on the station for free. Her unique take on that issue and others caught the attention of crosstown competitor KXNT, where she became co-host of the morning show in 1999.

WNYM/The Apple Rebrands as The Answer

The Answer Takes a Bite Out of The Apple

The Apple/970 WNYM began running promos recently saying the “Old Apple was going away,” and to check out the station starting today for the answer.

Well, it’s just that–Salem’s owned The Apple has been rebranded as The Answer in on-air promos, top-of-the-hour IDs, and show opens.

The program schedule has been altered slightly, especially the local presence with Curtis Sliwa getting a later morning start. It’s still a three-hour block for the Guardian Angels founder, but now it’s from 7 to 10 a.m.

Nationally heard Bill Bennett‘s Morning in America takes the 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. slot.

A couple of Dennis’ –Miller and Prager get an hour earlier start time for their syndicated shows. Dennis Miller moves to 10 a.m. to noon, while Dennis Prager takes the noon to 3 p.m. block.

The other weekday programming remains unchanged: Michael Medved from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sliwa and Jeffrey Lichtman from 5 p.m to 7 p.m., and Hugh Hewitt on 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The changes were announced by Salem’s new VP and director of spoken word format, Phil Boyce, who joined the company last month.
