The ‘Does God Have a Future?’ Round Up

ntl_godsfuture_100316_ms-300x225.jpgWe covered Nightline’s “Does God Have a Future?” panel at Cal Tech over the weekend between religion denouncing yet God touting Deepak Chopra and Jean Houston and religion denouncing yet atheists Michael Shermer and Sam Harris.

Now, everyone has written their takes on the panel which is set to air on March 23rd and be posted in full online the same day:

  • Houston’s The ‘Future of God’ Debate post on Huffpo.

  • Chopra’s “Does God have a future?” piece up at SFGate.com

  • Shermer just posted his “My Debate Date with Deepak (and friends)” on True/Slant.

We are told Harris hasn’t blogged about his take yet because he has a manuscript due.

Nightline filmed a two and half hour debate between True/Slant blogger (Skeptic publisher) Michael Shermer and Huffpo blogger (best selling author) Deepak Chopra titled “Does God Have a Future?” at Cal Tech yesterday. An edited version will air on March 23rd with the entire conversation to be available online on the same date.

The two men, while going back and forth online for many many years had never met in person before the event moderated by Nightline’s Dan Harris. Chopra has appeared on the cover of Skeptic for his claims about quantum mechanics and consciousness. Chopra often getting irritated by the call out.

It was clear from the sold out crowd at the Beckman Auditorium full of mostly science students that Michael Shermer with his wingman Sam Harris of The Reason Project, were the home team. Chopra and his partner Jean Houston also had their fans in the audience, just far fewer.

The debate, heated at times, was largely civil. Chopra was the only person on the panel booed by the crowd, twice. Shermer commented,”How very unspiritual of you.”

Chopra shot back,”You bring out the worst in me.”

Skeptic Michael Shermer is Blogging at True/Slant

156px-Shermer_wiki_portrait4.jpgMichael Shermer author and publisher of Skeptic Magazine is now at True/Slant. He was gracious enough to give us a moment of his time to ask him about it:

FBLA: Does this mean we can call you a blogger? As in, “we’re interviewing a blogger right now”?

MS: Yup, I’m officially a blogger now, so I can use colloquialisms, like “yup.”

FBLA: Are you skeptical about this whole old media thing now that you’re a blogger?

MS: I’ve always been skeptical of the media, ever since I saw a story on the news on a topic that I actually knew something about, and I could see exactly where and how the reporting was wrong, and that made me wonder what I was being told (and accepting uncritically) about subjects I knew next to nothing about, which is most of the news.

FBLA: Who’s your favorite True/Slant blogger (save Matt Taibbi)?

MS: Tina Dupuy is my favorite True/Slant blogger, because she speaks truthiness/slantiness to power.

FBLA: Good pick. We also would have accepted Matt Fleischer as an answer. What can we look forward to on your page?

MS: Science and politics, science and economics, science and society, and science and sex (the latter thrown in so I can get more followers).

FBLA: Oh you bloggers are all alike.

Thanks Michael! Check out his page here.
