A Couple of Great Nikki Finke Strands [Updated]

Here’s the first one. And… Because we can never for whatever reason get on-the-record cooperation from PMC, we intentionally did not go to them for comment. If, after reading this item, someone from that end wants to chime in, we’ll be happy to update below.*

Through the grapevine, we hear that Jay Penske, Mike Fleming Jr. and Nellie Andreeva are actively trying to convince Nikki Finke to return to the Deadline fold. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that Deadline, minus Finke, now gets traffic-beat by TheWrap. But that’s just a guess. The discussions, we’re told, are ongoing.

Now, on to the second, even juicier bit of Finke business. We say that because this strand involves some rare phone and email contact between Finke and rival Sharon Waxman.

Nikki Finke’s Version of TGIF

A week after Good Friday, Nikki Finke is celebrating Good Riddance.

The hiatus-ed one’s Twitter feed is dominated these days by links to Studio System content. But every once in a while, the veteran entertainment journalist chimes in about things like the Oscars or – in this case – the object of her one-time home office affections:

Josh Gad Tapped for Book of Gilligan

Shutterstock_JoshGadIn the comments to Mike Fleming Jr.‘s Deadline item, the notion of a Warner Bros. Gilligan’s Island movie starring Josh Gad is being greeted with overwhelming dismay. We concur.

Book of Mormon – in NYC and on tour – is a sublimely hilarious concoction worthy of Wilder, Sturges and SCTV. As opposed to dredging the Skipper and Little Buddy. Should the makers of this pointless, doomed enterprise foolishly decide to proceed, they would do well to pay special attention to Deadline commenter Ross Kardon:

What did not make any sense about the 1960′s TV show Gilligan’s Island is why would the Howells pack up all their belongings if they only intended to be away for three hours?…

If they were really stranded on a tropical island, those castaways would have had to deal with serious survival problems like mosquitoes, malaria, dengue fever and other diseases and not being able to get to a doctor.

The Nikki Finke-PMC Era is Officially Over

DeadlineHollywoodlogoIn a co-bylined post that few would have thought possible just a few months ago, Nikki Finke’s film and TV workhorses Mike Fleming Jr. and Nellie Andreeva announced at 9:26 p.m. ET tonight that their days of reporting to the volatile Finke are over:

Despite attempts by all to have it go otherwise, Nikki Finke will no longer be leading Deadline Hollywood, and she will not be writing weekend box office or filing stories going forward. This is an emotional and painful parting of the ways for us…

Josh Dickey’s Tenure at TMZ Lasts All of Three Months

TMZ founder Harvey Levin can be a demanding boss. His ability to ferret out stories, sources and exclusives in a telephone manner that is second-to-none creates exceedingly high expectations for all those who work alongside him in the 24/7 newsroom.

Did the Levin horizon of journalism deliverables have something to do with the exit in late June of Josh Dickey (pictured), hired as TMZ.com managing editor just a few months earlier? Probably.

This morning, just as TheWrap provided a friendly, familiar home for fired Variety film reporter Jeff Sneider, it is now also the new place of re-employ for Sneider’s old boss. Dickey has rejoined Sharon Waxman‘s operation as managing editor, bumping Joseph Kapsch up to Lisa Fung‘s vacated executive editor slot.

Nikki Finke Less Than Thrilled with Fleming-Bart Variety Column

It’s the kind of collaboration we expected at PMC-owned Variety. Right there, online today and in this week’s print edition, are Deadline film editor Mike Fleming Jr. and his former Variety mentor Peter Bart, together again in a new column. This occasional feature is called “Double Take” and certainly will cause many Hollywood trade watchers to do the same.

FishbowlNY was curious what Fleming’s current boss Nikki Finke thought about the PMC cross-pollination. She is not pleased.

“I wasn’t even aware that Peter Bart still had a job at Variety until recently,” she told us exclusively. “It’s shocking enough that Variety continues to employ him despite his long history as one of the most unethical journalists at a trade.”
