KTTV Investigation Leads to Formation of LASD Cyber Squad

This is worth way more than a local journalism prize. Today on Fox 11, reporter Gina Silva gave viewers a first look at the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s new “electronic communications unit.”

What makes today’s report so special is that this cyber squad was set up as a result of Silva’s earlier 2012 reports on the phenomenon of “Facebook parties,” illegal affairs where drugs and alcohol are sold to often underage patrons. LASD Captain Mike Parker at one point in the piece says: “The Fox series helped us to see that it was even bigger than we’d realized. So I’d like to thank Fox.”

LA Sheriff’s Department Gets Twitter Pranked

Rapper The Game and his Twitter feed are in the news. LA sheriff’s are mulling charges after someone on The Game’s Twitter account (The Game claims it was a friend) tweeted that the rapper was looking for an intern–and gave the number to the LA Sheriff’s Department’s Compton station. The Game’s 583,000-odd followers responded in droves, overloading the Compton station’s help line.

“It was almost like a symphony of misery,” LASD Captain Mike Parker told the LA Times. “You’ve got a multitude of phones ringing simultaneously.”

L.A. County Sheriff’s Department officials say, accident or no, they want an apology from The Game.
