Mirthala Salinas and Mayor Villaraigosa: Does the Romance Cost the City?

07_33_33news7.jpg

The LA Times dutifully kept the heat on Telemundo temptress Mirthala Salinas and Mayor Villaraigosa, sort of. As Mickey Kaus points out, the LAT considers her the victim, with the last line in the piece:

“She is a community figure; people relate to her and respect her,” said Rochelle Newman-Carrasco, chief executive of Enlace, an L.A. communications marketing firm that specializes in Latino media. “Spanish-language news anchors are not just readers of the news. They are the voice of the community; they are advocates for the community and role models.

Passing quickly over the role model part, Luke Ford wonders why dating politicans is worthy of respect. Mayor Sams’ commentors agree, in their fashion.

Eric Longabardi, of ERSNews, has the latest on a female security officer hand-picked by Villaraigosa, who also assures AP’s Michael Blood that no tax-payer monies have paid for nookie, locations for nookie, transport for nookie, but security during nookie? That’s a different story.

Poor Andres Martinez. Remember him–the op-ed section guy who dated a woman in PR, whose client he tapped to guest-edit a section, and his semi-conflict of interest problem? The LA Times wasn’t very concerned about his career.

Wondering exactly when Mirthala Salinas and Mayor Villaraigosa met? ERS News (which really needs to learn the joys of permalinks) had a handy photo essay, with some mighty interesting shots.

And how odd that it took this scandal to get the Mayor to finally do something about the city’s pot-holes?

vial.jpgSizzlin’ Journalism: The normally reserved political press gets all hot and bothered at two press conferences with Villaraigosa — peppering the mayor with questions about his affair with Telemundo newscaster Mirthala Salinas. Reporter Duke Helfand sets the scene:

The news conference devolved into a chaotic free-for-all with reporters shoving their microphones in his face and shouting questions in English and Spanish.

It was the kind of persistent media coverage usually reserved for Hollywood royalty hunted by paparazzi in search of a money shot.

At a separate downtown news conference earlier in the day to announce a $7.8-million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for Green Dot Public Schools, nearly two dozen journalists turned a frenzied question-and-answer session into a near-National Enquirer moment.

Ignoring teachers and parents standing a few feet away, journalists zeroed in on Villaraigosa, with one wanting to know what kind of example he had set for “thousands of people of color.”

Mirthala Salinas on Leave, Telemundo To Investigate/Did Villaraigosa Fly Her?

Mirthala Salinas, the Telemundo newscaster and power-dater, has been placed on leave, pending an internal investigation.

What’s to investigate? Is there a shortage of Journalism 101 textbooks?

Telemundo has her statement that Babelfish renders as

I am going to cooperate with the station and esteem its commitment to carry out a complete revision of this situation. I trust that when all the aspects are analyzed, it will be clear that I behaved appropriately.

Villaraigosa’s Staff Knew About Affair With Salinas: Tax Dollars at Work?

Tabloid Baby, who really can’t let go of a story, reports that surprise! Mayor Villaraigosa was unable to attend the Pacific Palisades Fourth of July Parade. He was, uh, otherwise engaged. Idle thought: Rocky Delgadillo must be grinning from ear to ear.

Speaking of busy, how did Antonio-our-ownio manage to appear all over town and still keep Mirthala Salinas smiling? The LA Times claims that his staff knew about the affair for months.

November 2005 Villaraigosa was spotted at Salinas’ Sherman Oaks condo complex.

March 20, 2006 Salinas in NYC, covering Villaraigosa, talking educational reform with Mayor Bloomberg.

June 2006, Salinas in Sacramento, covering Villaraigosa as he lobbied for support of his LAUSD takeover. Photos of the two are taken, causing worry among his staff about leaks of the growing relationship.

September 2006 Villaraigosa is regularly seen at Cedars-Sinai, visiting Salinas’ mother, a cancer patient there.

December 2006 Villaraigosa loses his Deputy Mayor for Communications, Cecile Ablack. Hmmm. Sean Clegg, part of the inner circle takes over the job.

Perhaps the Mayor should have stayed with photo-ops like this.

Telemundo Execs Not Happy with Mirthala Salinas

antonio-and-mirthala.jpg

ERS News (who broke the story about Salinas and Fabian Nunez) is reporting that Telemundo anchor Mirthala Salinas is in big trouble with her bosses, General manager Manuel Abud and News Director Al Corral. The gist:

on three separate occasions Telemundo management asked Salinas if she was having an affair with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and all three times she denied the relationship over the past year. Telemundo management also feels “blindsided” about Salinas’ statement released yesterday to the LA Times and CNN. Apparently she did not run the statement through Telemundo management and she released that statement without their approval or vetting. Salinas, according to sources has hired a PR firm to help her deal with the fallout of her affair with the Mayor.

Luke Ford Scoops the LA Times, Daily News, but not Telemundo: Villaraigosa Admits to Affair with Mirthala Salinas

Luke Ford was right all along. The Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa announced that he was, indeed, in a relationship with Telemundo anchor Mirthala Salinas. She even reported on the mayor’s separation from his wife (scroll down to the third video, above.) Talk about getting close to a news source!

And here’s the best part: Telemundo management knew about the relationship–the station moved Salinas off the beat nearly a year ago. David Zahnizer, in the LA Weekly, writes:

Salinas made her biggest splash last year when, camera operator in tow, she got a rare peek at the stash of toilet brushes sent to Villaraigosa after he delivered his famous “We clean your toilets” speech to a crowd of immigrants.

FBLA thinks Villaraigosa probably has no chance of being Hillary Clinton’s running mate. The LA Times helpfully points out politicans who’ve recovered from scandals, like Gary Hart. Oops!

The Daily News traces the evolution of the story.

Mayor Sam is gloating.
