Tom Bergeron Makes Up for Osama bin Laden Interruption

When Tom Bergeron sat down this week with HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd, there was an immediate, obvious connection. Redd, as Miss Virginia, competed in 2003 in the Miss America pageant, the same year that Bergeron hosted.

Later on in the conversation, Bergeron was reunited via Skype from Redwood City, CA with Dave Bradley, whose son’s unusual readings of picture book words (toucan became crocodile, shark became dolphin) netted a $10,000 prize on America’s Funniest Home Videos. Explained dad:

“We had a big viewing party at our house for our episode. And just before you announced the winner, ABC News came one with news of Osama bin Laden’s death. So we never got to hear you announce us as the winners. So I have a request that you would tell my son Luke, in your best announcer voice, that he’s the big winner on America’s Funniest Videos.”

Jezebel news editor Erin Gloria Ryan questioned, via Twitter, the soft handling of the controversy by a news show airing on the same network as the beauty pageant. She has followed with further accusations of lazy journalism:

It should also be noted that in “reporting” on this story, GMA did not reach out to me or anyone at Jezebel for comment or clarification; they just had Kazantsev on to deliver her talking points to a sympathetic anchor on the TV home of Miss America. If ABC had reached out, they would have known that since the story ran, we’ve learned more, and that things are still developing on our end. It would have been a tougher interview. But that’s clearly not what GMA wanted.

Miss America Hates Wikileaks, Might Be An Idiot

Teresa Scanlan of Nebraska was crowned Miss America on Saturday evening in Las Vegas. During the question category of the pageant, Miss Scanlon was asked about Wikileaks, specifically how to balance people’s right to know with the need for government security? Her rambling response:

You know, when it came to that situation, it was actually based on espionage, and when it comes to the security of our nation we have to focus on security first, and then people’s right to know. Because it’s so important that everyone in our borders is safe, and so we can’t let things like that happen, and they must be handled properly, and I think that was the case.

Miss Scanlon plans to make a career in politics.
