The Weather Channel’s Editor Knows We’re All Morons

dumb dumb dumb dumb

If you’ve visited The Weather Channel’s website lately, you’ve probably noticed the ridiculous headlines plastered across the homepage. A few examples: The Fox News-like “Are You AFRAID of The Weather?” the out of place “Cockroaches Have Homes Too” and the nicely vague “Would You Try THIS?” These headlines exist because they work.

Weather.com’s editor, Neil Katz, has turned the site into weird place, but he did so because he knows we’re all idiots. We love reading stupid articles, and the numbers back that up. Katz told BuzzFeed (Please note the irony of a BuzzFeed staffer asking someone about “ridiculous headlines”) that page views have doubled since last year and social sharing is up 900 percent. Nine hundred percent!

Katz understands that some people — you know, those with the smarts — won’t like the new Weather.com, but that won’t stop the crazy headlines from coming:

AOL Huffington Post Takes on Neil Katz and Lori Leibovich

Arianna Huffington announced today that AOL Huffington Post has named Neil Katz, Executive Editor at CBSNews.com, as its new Executive News Editor, and Lori Leibovich, long-time lifestyle editor and writer, has been named Women’s Editor.

Katz will help manage editorial teams across all AOL Huffington Post destinations, and Leibovich, who has over a decade of experience covering women’s issues, will be revamping the women’s destinations, including ParentDish and MyDaily.

Arianna Huffington, reportedly, is “delighted” about the two new hires. Although we get the sense that that’s her reaction to everything.

AOL HuffPo Making More Moves

Big morning for the AOL HuffPo–or A-Ho as we sometimes like to call it. The company announced two new hires. Lori Leibovich was named the new “Women’s Editor” and Neil Katz is the new “Executive News Editor,” after apparently being poached away from the same position at CBSNews.com. Katz will help manage the site’s network of editors and oversee the introduction of more videos into coverage.

Aside from the new hires, the company also announce the launch of two new sections: AOL Industry and AOL Healthy Living. We think everyone out there can figure out what Healthy Living is all about. Greek yogurt and antioxidants and yoga and whatnot. But AOL Industry sounds kind of interesting. From what we can gather, the section doesn’t look like it intends to go in a straight news direction. Instead, it’s targeting the trades in the energy, government and defense industries. Trade coverage is often sycophantic–since the pubs are going after industry ad dollars–so it will be interesting to see what kind coverage comes out of AOL Industry. Is Arianna Huffington going to be overseeing positive coverage of the latest Boeing war machines, or lunatic arguments about the benefits of “clean coal?”

We’ll definitely be reading.
