Wondering About That Spike Jonze-Jonah Hill Collaboration

It’s that time of year when a lucky group of film journalists including the LA TimesRebecca Keegan jet off to Telluride, Colorado and Toronto, Canada to be wined, dined and awards-season appetized.

OpeningCeremonyNYStoreHere in NYC, in the shadow of TIFF, there will be an event of a different nature but one that involves a couple of very familiar festival marquee names. As first reported by WWD‘s Jessica Iredale, Spike Jonze and Jonah Hill have teamed to produce and write a one-act play for the fall New York Fashion Week presentation of Opening Ceremony’s Spring 2015 line:

Jonze, who has done fashion capsules with Opening Ceremony for his films Where The Wild Things Are and Her, will direct a cast of actors and models in his first project since winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Her earlier this year. The storyline is still being finalized, according to OC co-founder Humberto Leon, who noted the play was Jonze’s idea, as was bringing on Hill, who is known primarily for acting though his writing credits include 21 Jump Street and its sequel 22 Jump Street.

As a testament to her efforts, the February 6-13 edition of the NYC event marked an important milestone in her campaign to rectify some of the wrongs:

“What most people probably don’t realize is that the [common fashion industry] body type is really based on casting girls instead of women. And so there’s a labor dimension to that, that I think people are oblivious to.”

“We championed this bill that we introduced last year, and Governor Cuomo signed into law in October, that basically gives fashion models who are underage teens the same protections as other child performers in New York.”

UK Newspaper Pair Challenge New York ‘World Fashion Capital’ Ranking

Lisa Armstrong is fashion editor for London’s Telegraph newspaper, a contributing editor to Vogue and the owner of Twitter handle @LisaDoesFashion. When she and an equally well-qualified colleague in town for New York Fashion Week – Telegraph deputy fashion editor Luke Leitch - question a recent NYC world ranking, it’s worth paying attention to.

In case you missed it, a survey by Austin, TX-based outfit The Global Language Monitor recently crowned Manhattan ahead of Paris, London and Milan as the world’s top fashion capital. Armstrong and Leitch break down the necessary elements for such NYC legitimacy, based on their time here at NYFW 2014. Starting with the number of truly fabulous runway shows:

On the Amazing Show Front we are left with pretty slim pickings. There was Rag & Bone’s endless succession of skinny-jeans-you-already-own, worn with jumpers-that-look-as-though-you’ve-already-worn-them (think Jack Wills, but with grumpier-looking models). Far more amazing was the Ukrainian streaker who insinuated his posing pouch on to Prabal Gurung‘s catwalk on Saturday – although it wasn’t all that useful for the poor designer…
