Tributes and toasts are flowing in the Emerald Isle for Bob Gallico, a New York native who led Irish radio to celebrated morning show heights via Dublin’s Radio Nova. Gallico passed away over the weekend at age 83.
One of the more moving recollections was shared on Ireland’s News Talk FM 106-108 by long-time friend and colleague Declan Meehan. Gallico returned to the U.S. from Ireland in 2004 and was living in Connecticut. It was from there that he told Meehan last fall that he did not have long to live:
“Bob told me of his [undisclosed] diagnosis last autumn,” Meehan recalls, “and said he expected to get a year. He was very philosophical about it. He said, ‘Well, you know, I’ve had a good run, I’m in my eighties now, I’ve done everything I want to do. And, well, if this is the end that has been chosen, so be it.”
