‘Too Soon to Say Anything is Final’ for NY1 Rebranding

The blogosphere backlash has been palpable.

Time Warner Cable is making the decision to do away with NY1 as a logo in favor of a more corporate friendly moniker, likely TWC News.

A TWC VP of public relations, Maureen Huff says even though NY1 is the company’s longest running news channel, this is part of a bigger picture.

Related: FishbowlNY, NY1 Reportedly Being Rebranded by Time Warner Cable Honchos

“We have 17 news outlets across the country, we have more than 800 employees working at these stations,” Huff tells FishbowlNY. “We have different brands for each of them. For NY1 as an example, we have not changed the branding in the 20 years it’s been in existence.”

Of course, the next question is why should they?

Changing the NY1 branding is not simply like Channel 4 rebranding the newscast as NBC4NewYork. Everyone knows the station is always Channel 4 and the call letters are WNBC. History is a wonderful thing.

NY1 doesn’t have call letters, it only has NY1 has its identity. So TWC brass deciding it would be less complicated to add a company “reminder” on the screen could backfire–badly.

Huff says the rebranding will also allow an opportunity to refresh the NY1 graphics, while “creating a more consistent brand across the news channels.”

NY1 Reportedly Being Rebranded by Time Warner Cable Honchos

Apparently 20 years wasn’t long enough for Time Warner to build a brand at the 24-hour news channel NY1.

The station name and corner-of-the-screen logo may be in doubt, according to the New York Daily News.

The paper says Time Warner Cable market research indicates most viewers are not aware that NY1 is exclusive to TWC customers. The report says NY1 will be rebranded as TWC News in the fall.

Although cable competitor Verizon offers its own FiOS1 newscast, there is no constant “reminder” of the cable company. In addition, News 12 doesn’t hit viewers over the head that it is a Cablevision product.

FishbowlNY attempted to reach a NY1 spokesperson for comment. We also reached out to veteran morning anchor Pat Kiernan, who referred us to his In the Papers segment today. Since the story was on page three of the News, Kiernan didn’t shy away.

“That means deemphasizing the NY1 brand, and putting a Time Warner Cable logo on the screen, probably alongside the NY1 brand,” Kiernan said on the air.

NY1 Anchor Pat Kiernan Plays Panelist on CNN

CNN viewers who were waiting for the “cruise from hell” to dock in Mobile, Alabama last night were greeted by NY1 morning anchor Pat Kiernan.

Kiernan joined a group appearing on Piers Morgan Tonight with former CNBC host Donny Deutsch substituting.

This was not his first time on the cable news network. From 2000 to 2004, Kiernan anchored a business program on the now-defunct CNNfn. That broadcast led to assignments on the “main stage” as well.

In addition, Kiernan occasionally is reunited with his former CNNfn colleagues Ali Velshi and Christine Romans on CNN’s weekend programming.

McDonalds Holds Annual Black Media Legends Gala

As the calendar flipped to February, it became Black History Month. For the annual honor, the tri-state McDonalds restaurants select Black Media Legends and Trailblazers. Each year they are showcased on the place mats of customers’ trays.

This year, the lunchtime event moved from the Waldorf Astoria to the Plaza Hotel.

The 18 people are standouts in their fields (TV, radio, and newspapers). But this was all about the great WNBC anchor Sue Simmons, who stepped down last June.

Most of the presenters and award winners mentioned Simmons in their speeches, or ad libbed, due to her remarkable career and presence.

Ironically, John Noel, a reporter with WNBC since 1998, never mentioned Sue’s name in accepting his trophy. FishbowlNY did speak to Noel, a Brooklyn native, about sharing this year’s class with his former colleague.

“If you’re going to call anybody a legend in the media here in New York City, clearly she qualifies for the title,” Noel says. “She’s known and loved by millions of people in the metropolitan area. Much of what she’s done on the air remains legendary.”

The full list of winners after the jump

The New York Times Loves NY1

The true test of a New Yorker? Ask them what they think of NY1. If they say that they don’t like the channel, or even hesitate to express their feelings, they are not a New Yorker.

NY1 is the TV soul of New York, and Pat Kiernan is our spiritual leader. And during Hurricane Sandy, The New York Times noticed that, and has lavished praise upon the lovable channel:

It [NY1] gave a disaster human scale, and also projected calm and authority as circumstances deteriorated. Major broadcast and cable networks abandoned their prime-time programming to cover the storm frenetically live, but only NY1’s coverage was unhurried. Over the course of the night, its broadcast became a comforting town square, the coverage not as improvisational as you might expect.

Yes, that’s right! The Times then went on to highlight several NY1ers, including Zack Fink, Jeanine Ramirez, Ruschell Boone, John Schiumo and Dean Meminger. Oh and of course the Times gave a shout out to Kiernan, who by 4:00 am Tuesday “was in a suit and tie behind the anchor desk, keeping the ship steady.”

NY1 Catches Staten Island Borough President Calling Lady Gaga a ‘Slut’

Now this is what you call an exclusive. NY1 was attending a meeting for an anti-drug campaign launched by Staten Island borough president James Molinaro, when he curiously targeted Lady Gaga with some pent-up rage.

Molinaro explained that the media (NY1 included, we assume) and celebrities were to blame for kids doing drugs. He then pointed to a picture of Gaga on a funny little piece of poster board that looked like it was created by a 13 year old, and said, “To me, she’s not an actress, she is a slut in the pure, in the pure meaning of the word.” Just in case you were wondering, a pure slut is always worse than a diluted slut.

NY1, sensing the scoop, immediately reached out to Gaga for comment. Sadly, they haven’t heard back yet.

Remembering Victims of 9/11, 11 Years Later

We mark time as another year has elapsed since the 9/11 attacks. The 11th anniversary features the now-traditional, if not emotional, “reading of the names” of victim’s families at the World Trade Center. This is only the second time since 2001 that September 11 falls on a Tuesday.

If last year’s 10th anniversary was more solemn, today’s remembrance is more subdued. No public officials are participating. But, the TV stations are resuming coverage.

On Cable, NY1 and Verizon Fios 1 are going wall-to-wall. The other local channels provided the same feed–Channel 2/WCBS, Channel 4/WNBC, Channel 5/WNYW, Channel 7/WABC, Channel 9/WWOR, TV10 55/WLNY, and Channel 11/WPIX.

FishbowlNY is reposting links to our special 9/11 series that was published last year.

Happy 20th Birthday to NY1!

We were a couple months away from electing Bill Clinton to his first term as president. Time Warner Cable debuted a 24-hour channel, NY1. To blow out the 20 candles on the cake, NY1 got the “Empire State Building treatment.” Our sister site TVSpy reports the iconic structure was lit in the station’s blue and yellow colors yesterday.

NY1 mainstays Pat Kiernan and Roma Torre had a hand in the lighting ceremony. TVSpy has more on the story.

WNYW Sports Anchor Duke Castiglione Gets Multi-Year Extension

You’ll be seeing a lot more of sports anchor Duke Castiglione. Sources tell FishbowlNY that he has agreed to a multi-year extension with the Fox O&O. Since joining WNYW five years ago, Castiglione has covered every major sporting event. But none has been bigger than the New York Giants’ stirring Super Bowl XLII run. Castiglione capped the Giants’ dream season hosting the post-game show, and subsequent victory parade for Channel 5.

As the G-Men look toward a repeat, Castiglione, 39, will co-host the Giants season kick-off special, Defending the Throne, September 1 on sister station WWOR.

“Duke gives NY sports fans more than just scores and highlights; viewers get an all-access pass to their favorite sports teams,” WNYW news director Dianne Doctor, says. “His exceptional reporting continues to be an asset to our station and representative of our dedication to local sports coverage.”

Castiglione’s sports duties include hosting the long-running weekend wrap-up program Sports Extra, Sundays at 10:30 p.m. In addition, he covers Yankee post-games for Channel 9. The next game is August 14 versus the Texas Rangers.

NY1 Reporter Attacked By Sheet-Wearing Snack Bandit

Here is your morning “Only in New York” moment. NY1 reporter Vivian Lee was busy preparing for a story in Cobble Hill when a woman, draped in a white sheet, climbed in an NY1 van and began using Lee’s make-up and eating snacks. According to DNA Info, when Lee asked the make-up marauder to leave, she allegedly punched Lee in the neck.

Thankfully the van’s driver was able to control the attacker until authorities arrived. “I’m okay,” Lee told DNA Info, after the incident.

No word on what kind of snacks the attacker went for first. If there were Milanos in the van, we could (almost) understand.

(H/T Daily Intel)

Eliot Spitzer Joins NY1′s Inside City Hall as ‘Wiseguy’

Since Eliot Spitzer had the “governor” dropped from his name, he’s made waves in broadcasting. His latest move in that path, Spitzer has been added to NY1′s political coverage. He began as a guest-host on MSNBC, before getting his own short-lived show on CNN, and in March got his own show on Current TV. And now he’s adding NY1′s Inside City Hall where he’ll be one of the program’s three “Wiseguys” along with former Mayor Ed Koch and former Senator Alfonse D’amato.

“I am delighted to be joining two of New York’s sharpest political minds to discuss the important issues of the day,” Spitzer says.

The trio will explore the biggest political issues beginning next week.

“Former Governor Eliot Spitzer is one of the smartest people I know,” Koch says. “His joining Wiseguys broadens its political insights. Welcome aboard, Eliot,” said Koch.

“Eliot will certainly add some spark to the Wiseguys. Look for more fireworks!” said D’Amato.

Spitzer was born and raised in the Bronx and is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review.

NY1′s Inside City Hall, hosted by Errol Louis, is telecast from 7 to 8 weeknights with a replay at 10pm.
