Observer Drops Scene Publisher Julie Dannenberg

Julie Dannenberg, the publisher of the monthly Observer Media Group magazine Scene, has been laid off. Dannenberg had come to the magazine from Avenue, where she held the same role.

Peter Davis, editor-in-chief of Scene, told WWD that no successor has been named yet. He also didn’t miss the chance to tout Scene as “a local Vanity Fair.”

Scene — the most unintentionally hilarious magazine ever — is a little over a year old. In November of last year, Dannenberg said the glossy was “doing well.” We wonder if she still has kind words for it.

Joseph Meyer, Brother-in-Law of Jared Kushner, Named Observer CEO

Joseph Meyer, the brother-in-law of Jared Kushner, has been named the Observer Media Group’s new CEO. Meyer comes to the company from Elliott Management, a hedge fund. He is only 33 years old.

“Joseph will oversee business operations and will focus on making investments and exploring acquisitions,” wrote Kushner, in a memo. “He brings years of experience identifying growth opportunities and will help the Observer Media Group expand in the areas it already serves and bring its fresh voice to entirely new markets.”

Observer Media Group Names Michael Albanese President

The Observer Media Group, parent of The New York Observer, has named Michael Albanese its new president. The New York Post reports that Albanese, the former publisher of Spin, resigned from the magazine Monday.

Albanese had been with Spin since 2006.

Albanese takes over for Christopher Barnes, who left Observer Media in the beginning of August. Elizabeth Spiers also departed the paper at that time.

New York Observer Launches New Magazine Targeting Parents

Attention Park Slopers: You have a new magazine coming your way August 31. The Observer Media Group is launching New York Observer Scooter, a bi-annual magazine targeting parents who have grown up in the city. The magazine is free, and will have a circulation of about 40,000 in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Peter Feld is Scooter’s Editor-in-Chief. He says the magazine will showcase the advantages of raising kids here. “Scooter will be highlighting ‘only in New York’ attractions — the playgrounds, brunch spots and hidden spaces that are the city kids’ birthright.” Brunch spots? We had no idea kids brunched.

Feld says that the city provides plenty of content, adding, “Taking advantage of all that New York City has to offer will play a large part in our editorial content, with tips on day trips, urban gardening, and books, movies and music recommended for children.”

New York Observer To Co-Create Free Weekly

The New York Observer may have gotten a minor site redesign and a new digital editor yesterday, but Jared Kushner‘s paper saved its biggest news for today.

The Observer Media Group will be teaming up with Las Vegas publisher Wendoh Media to create Vegas Seven, a weekly paper that will cover the culture of the self-proclaimed Entertainment Capital.

The New York Times points out that this is a strange move for Kushner, as The Observer has not been exempt from the money troubles that plague the rest of the industry. And while the Times and The Wall Street Journal both branched out last year to create hyper-local editions of their papers for the Bay Area, the Vegas Seven will not only be co-owned by another publisher, but it’s free as well, making it more of a gamble in terms of seeing a return on investment. Then again, it is Vegas.

Observer Picks Up Majority Stake In Webby Winner Very Short List

Today, IAC and the Observer Media Group officially announced their deal passing majority control of IAC’s email newsletter Very Short List to Jared Kushner-owned Observer. VSL, which last week won a Webby Award for “Best Guides, Ratings and Review Website,” has been renamed The Observer’s Very Short List and will be written and edited by the staff of The New York Observer — who are already overworked thanks to recent staff cuts.

News of the deal broke this weekend, with Gawker reporting that the entire VSL staff had been laid off. A press release distributed today did not touch on any staff cutbacks, but did mention that founders Kurt Andersen and Michael Jackson “will continue to remain involved” in the joint venture that is now The Observer’s Very Short List.
