Anthony Cumia: ‘The FCC is Nothing Compared to the PC Police’

AnthonyCumiaTwitterProfilePicFired Opie & Anthony host Anthony Cumia is wasting no time moving on. He’s launching, in August, a subscription podcast from his home-studio in Long Island; he’s hired a lawyer to try and get SirusXM to pay out the remainder of his through-October 2014 contract; and he’s explained to The Daily Beast’s Lloyd Grove that he saw this coming a mile away:

“There were plenty of lawyers that were always at the guard, waiting to strike down something we wanted to do on the Opie & Anthony Show,” Cumia said. “It just got worse and worse over there.”

“Look how I got fired. It had nothing to do with the FCC” – the Federal Communications Commission, which in any case has no authority over subscription-based satellite radio. “It had nothing to do with government regulations. It had to do with the people who run the company. The FCC is nothing compared to the PC police.”

SiriusXM Shows Anthony the Door

AnthonyCumiaTwitterProfilePicAnthony Cumia‘s Twitter feed on this Independence Day is a tale of two constituencies.

The fired co-host of Opie & Anthony is re-tweeting both supportive messages of SiriusXM membership cancellation and responding to other declarations from people who applaud the satellite broadcaster’s decision. Here’s the SiriusXM statement, issued this morning:

“SiriusXM has terminated its relationship with Anthony Cumia of the Opie & Anthony channel. The decision was made, and Cumia informed, late Thursday, July 3, after careful consideration of his racially charged and hate-filled remarks on social media. Those remarks and postings are abhorrent to SiriusXM, and his behavior is wholly inconsistent with what SiriusXM represents.”

FBLA 20 Questions: Matt Haley

Haleyface1.jpg

FBLA so seldomly encounters Pynchon enthusiasts among our readers. But Matt Haley, one of the creative talents behind Who Wants to be a Superhero as well as a superhero artisthero, defied our admittedly low expectations when he answered our mythic questions.

1. What newspapers do you read? They still make those?

2. Which ones do you move your lips to while reading? Oh, the Onion, absolutely.

3. Which Web sites are on your favorites bookmark? The family-friendly ones are usually art sites, painters’ and illustrators’ blogs, people who are way more talented than I could ever hope to be. I bookmarked mine, too, just in case I get lost. The others, well…artists see naked people everyday, we’re like doctors. Right?

4. Where do you get your car washed? No car, I usually take the MTA. Don’t look at me that way.

5. Do you know your dentist’s first name?
Wayne. He is the best dentist in the world. Dentists say they’re ‘painless’, this guy really is. First time I had oral surgery, I’m in the chair, and I’m envisioning that scene from Marathon Man where Dustin Hoffman is being tortured. He tells me to close my eyes (never a good sign), and I notice my jaw is starting to go numb, but I hadn’t felt that dry pinch of the Xylocaine needle. I pry open one eyelid and drunkenly ask if he’s using some kind of spray or brush to apply the painkiller, and he calmly replies, “No, I have a rather large needle in your jaw, I’m just really careful.” I’m putting his kids through college, now.

Post-’Hos World: Opie & Anthony Suspended By XM

opie_anthony_suspension_fbny.jpg

Radio companies — even satellite ones — appear to be tightening up in a post-Imus world. Yesterday, XM suspended shock-jocks Opie & Anthony 30 days for a homeless man’s comments about Condoleezza Rice, Laura Bush and Queen Elizabeth, aired last week on the show. The suspension follows last week’s cancellation of The Dog House with JV and Elvis show by CBS Radio for a prank phone call to a Chinese restaurant.

Opie & Anthony’s latest suspension, though, seems to’ve stemmed from comments made during yesterday’s broadcast, which appearently ticked off XM management:

“Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday’s broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.”

Meanwhile, Rush Limbaugh and his “Barack The Magic Negro” bits soldier on, unscathed.
