Boring Guy Tom Hanks Tops ’100 Most Trusted People in America’ List

Reader’s Digest just published a piece titled the “100 Most Trusted People in America” and Tom Hanks took the top spot. This is not surprising. Hanks is perhaps the most boring dude alive. You know those dreams you have where nothing significant happens and you wake up knowing you had a dream so you feel like you should tell someone about it but it’s so vague you end up not saying anything? That’s what hanging out with Hanks is like.

Anyway, Sandra Bullock was number two in the poll. Which uh, see above.

Other highlights:

Jay Leno was more trusted than David Letterman (were people drunk when they voted?)

Robin Roberts was the most trusted woman on TV

Other highly trusted media people include Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Anderson Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, George Stephanopoulos, Scott Pelley, Kelly Ripa, Steve Harvey and Savannah Guthrie.

Judge Judy is more trusted than Matt Lauer.

Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey Celebrate Women in the World

In her opening remarks on the second day of The DailyBeast/Newsweek Women in the World Summit, former Secretary of State and New York Senator Hillary Clinton called women’s rights the 21st century’s “unfinished business.”

“The world is changing beneath our feet, and it is past time to embrace a 21st-century approach to advancing the rights and opportunities of women and girls,” Clinton said. “Technology, from satellite television to cell phones, from Twitter to Tumbler, is helping to bring abuses out of the shadows and into the center of global consciousness.”

Clinton’s remarks framed the morning session of panel discussions at the Summit. Clinton’s daughter Chelsea, a board member at The Clinton Foundation and a special correspondent for NBC News, was the morning’s first moderator, steering a panel about women’s roles in science, math and computer programming. The morning’s other moderators included ABC News anchor Cynthia McFadden, former CNN anchor Campbell Brown and CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell.

Land $2 Per Word at O, The Oprah Magazine

After launching in 2000 through a partnership with Hearst, O, The Oprah Winfrey Magazine has amassed a dozen ASME nods and won numerous accolades. Although it has some heavy newsstand competition, O‘s health editor Jihan Thompson said the pub differentiates itself in its service to readers: “[O] really has this positive, uplifting tone that I find is really the mission of the magazine.”

About half of the pub’s content is freelance written and, lucky for you enterprising scribes, the pub is now accepting pitches for many of its sections. Get details on what to pitch, plus contact info for editors in How To Pitch: O, The Oprah Magazine.
‘Citizen Hearst’: An Inside Look at the Hearst Media Empire

Ahead of its premiere at two New York City theaters next week, FishbowlNY attended a screening of Citizen Hearst Monday at the SoHo House. The documentary, directed by Academy Award nominee Leslie Iwerks and narrated by William H. Macy, celebrates the 125th anniversary of the company, interviewing current and former executives for an inside look at the company.

The documentary traces William Randolph Hearst‘s career trajectory from college-dropout publisher of the San Francisco Examiner to the founder of a media empire that boasts 51 newspapers, 300 magazines and 29 television stations. In an interview for the documentary, Dan Rather calls Hearst a “reformist journalist” who just “wanted to make a difference.”

Citizen Hearst features interviews with editors of some of the company’s top magazines, including Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Town & Country and Esquire. Several generations of Hearsts were interviewed, along with several major media personalities including Oprah Winfrey, Bob Iger, Leonard Maltin and Heidi Klum. The film also investigates how major events like the San Francisco earthquake in 1989 and the terrorist attacks of 9/11 have impacted the company.

The documentary will be shown at two NYC locations — the Chelsea Theatre and the 1st & 62nd Theatre — on March 14.

Citizen Hearst also featured an interview with the architect of the Hearst Tower in Manhattan, which MediabistroTV got a tour of last year. Watch it after the jump. continued…

O‘s Adam Glassman: ‘Even Oprah thought I was nuts in the beginning’

If only he had enough hours in a day. That’s the most challenging part of Adam Glassman‘s gig as creative director of O: The Oprah Magazine, a post where he’s constantly navigating the worlds of graphic design, fashion and media. In the latest installment of Mediabistro’s So What Do You Do? series, Glassman recalls his groundbreaking decision to use real women over fashion models.

“I don’t want to say that we don’t ever use models because there are times that we do, but as we speak to these three generations of women, how can you do that?” he said. “You need something that is going to appeal to everyone. So I started using women of all ages, and not just all ages, but really all shapes. And I thought that was really key. Even Oprah thought I was nuts in the beginning. She was like, ‘You really want to do fashion on real people?’ And I said, ‘Yes, why not? You do it on the show. You show your people in makeovers; you have it in the audience. Let’s try it.’”

MSG’s Al Trautwig Offers Insight into Professed Cheater Lance Armstrong

By now you probably heard or saw Lance Armstrong make his official cheating declaration to Oprah Winfrey. Armstrong, a cancer survivor, was the most decorated cyclist ever with a record seven Tour de France victories. With his admission last night of taking performance enhancing drugs throughout his career, those yellow jackets have all been taken away and the monumental sporting achievement was all but erased from memory.

Al Trautwig offered a unique perspective into the one-time superhero’s persona. Trautwig, who called the Tour De France during the “Armstrong Era,” spoke to Newsday about the first time he saw the future champion. It was 1992, in preparation for the Barcelona Olympics on NBC.

“… We went to interview him at the house that he was living in. And the only way I can describe it is for what Lance Armstrong was in 1992, he was an overly cocky, arrogant jerk. He just was. That’s what I came away feeling,” Trautwig tells Newsday’s Neil Best.

O Magazine Announces Three New Hires

O, The Oprah Magazine is shuffling the deck for a new look. The publication named a trio of appointments today. Kirby Rodriguez becomes design director, Leigh Haber is the books editor, and Jihan Thompson has been selected as health editor. Rodriguez and Thompson’s appointments are effective immediately, while Haber assumes her new role Monday.

Since March 2010, Rodriguez had been associate creative director of photography at Talbots. While there, Rodriguez speadheaded the brand’s first national print advertising campaigns. Prior to that, from 2005 to 2009, he was design director of Cookie, which was nominated for two American Society of Magazine Editors General Excellence Awards and two Society of Publication Designer’s Magazine of The Year Awards.

Earlier in his career, Rodriguez was art director at W Magazine.

Haber was most recently editor-at-large at Chronicle Books and consultant to the publishing-on-demand platform Blurb. She has held editorial roles at Scribner, Hyperion, and Rodale, acquiring and editing numerous New York Times bestsellers, including Al Gore’s iconic book on climate change, An Inconvenient Truth and the critically acclaimed novella by Steve Martin, Shopgirl.

Massive Layoffs Hit Oprah Winfrey’s OWN

Call it The Next Chapter at OWN!

Oprah Winfrey‘s struggling network, OWN, is headed for some major restructuring. The network announced one-fifth, or 30 staffers based in New York and Los Angeles, are being laid off.

“As CEO, I have a responsibility to chart the course for long-term success for the network. To wholly achieve that long-term success, this was a necessary next step,” Winfrey said in a statement.

The channel launched on New Year’s Day 2011, aabout that time that Winfrey had her syndicated show swan song. One year later, her primetime talk show and signature program on the network, debuted.

On March 11, a 90-minute edition of Oprah’s Next Chapter featuring Whitney Houston‘s daughter, Bobbi Kristina and the Houston family, was the most-watched show on the upstart network with 3.5 million viewers.

But not everyone has found the Oprah magic.

Real Housewife Melissa Gorga Dishes on Her Sister-in-Law From Hell

Slow moving holiday tourists and presidential motorcades be damned. Nothing could keep the faithful away from Michael’s today. With the place decked out in its holiday finery, the mood was like a swanky office party on steroids. While the usual suspects and a cool visitor from California (producer/composer David Foster) huddled over their tables deep in conversation, there was a little lunch for 14 in the middle of the dining room. I snagged one of the guests, Melissa Gorga, my favorite ‘housewife’ on The Real Housewives of New Jersey, for a chat about the knock-down, drag-out cat fights on last month’s reunion show and to get the real story about her on- and off-camera relationship with her fellow cast mate and sister-in-law, the charming Teresa Guidice.

Melissa, who is an absolute knockout in person, told me that the RHONJ cast (minus Jacqueline Laurita) shot the reunion special the day after wrapping the yet-to-be-aired Season 4, and the women were all seething about battles and betrayals the viewers haven’t even seen. “We had just had a huge blow up the night before, and that was what was on everyone’s mind. It was so hard not to say anything. That’s why Jacqueline wasn’t there,” Melissa tells me. “It was very confusing for us, and we were constantly trying not to say things about things that hadn’t aired yet. Bravo is so sorry they shot them back to back. I don’t think they are ever going to do that again.” Teresa “tried to set me up” and is back to her old tricks, Melissa told me, without giving anything away. After all the kissing and making up seen at the end of last season, Melissa’s husband Joe Gorga is “disgusted” with his table tipping sibling once again. Big surprise.

Fortune Lists 50 Most Powerful Women in Business

It’s Friday and it’s lunch time, so you’re probably done with the heavy work load and already thinking about watching the most illegal move in wrestling history. Or maybe that’s just us. Either way, it’s a good time for a list, and Fortune’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business for 2011 is worth checking out.

The issue hits newsstands Monday, but here’s a couple quick notes: Oprah Winfrey is an unfamiliar spot, having fallen 10 slots to number 16 because OWN hasn’t worked out yet, and one-third of the newcomers on the list are from India or China. Interesting, right?

Check out the top 10 most powerful women in business below, and head over to Fortune — or better yet, pick up the print version — for the rest.

Forbes Ranks The World’s 100 Most Powerful Women

Even though lists like Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women are essentially meaningless, the people included are usually worth noting, so they do serve a little purpose. This latest ranking from Forbes does a good job of picking women with real influence and bringing attention to those that don’t get enough credit.

Take the most powerful woman: Angela Merkel (right), the Chancellor of Germany. Her name might not ring a bell, but it should. There are a few more slightly obscure names in the list and some fairly obvious ones as well (Hillary Clinton checks in at number two).

We know — you want to hear who was the highest ranking New York media woman. We’ll give you one guess. If you’re thinking Sally Jessy Raphael, you’re creative, but wrong. It’s Jill Abramson, the new Executive Editor at The New York Times. She ranks eighth on the list.

Check out a few notable media names from the Most Powerful Women list after the jump.

Oprah hasn’t had the same zing behind her name since she left her show and started OWN. Somehow, shows such as “Ryan and Tatum: The O’Neals” have failed to grab the public’s attention, and OWN’s ratings have taken a beating. Now it appears that Oprah’s decline is impacting O, The Oprah Magazine as well.

According to The New York Post, ad pages for its August issue are down a whopping 31 percent, and pages for its September issue are down 18 percent. An O spokesperson says everything is fine, of course. She told the Post that people still want their Oprah fix, and the magazine is “the best place for fans who miss the show to stay engaged with the brand.”

While that might be true, if Oprah isn’t personally handing out the magazines to consumers (and maybe yelling out “You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!” too) there might not be enough power behind the brand to make people care.
