Gawker and the Palin Emails: Taking a Look at the Numbers

palinmailggg.pngWe’ve been keeping our eye on Gawker‘s Palin post numbers as they continue to escalate. The current tally of views the post has received stands at 777,453, meaning Pareene has pocketed close to $4000 on this post. We imagine this number will only rise as the story is more fully embraced by the MSM in the coming days (and it will be — the MSM will only talk about Wall St. numbers for so long).

We asked Gawker head Nick Denton whether the post was setting some sort of record numbers-wise. The answer is not yet, but it could be on its way. The Gawker views record-holder is the Tom Cruise Scientology promotional video that Denton posted last January, its current tally is 2,985,161 views (making it a $14,000 post). Denton also sent over a chart of Gawker’s traffic for the year so far, which shows another big jump in traffic during the Montauk Monster Scare of summer ’08 (another personal favorite), as well as the doubling of Gawker’s underlying traffic. Take a look for yourself after the jump.

Wherein Gawker Hijacks the Election

gawpalpic.pngWe love the idea of Gawker becoming a player in this election SO much — because seriously, how else could it get any crazier? (No really, how else?) — that we wanted to update you. Apparently, Rick Davis has confirmed that the Palin emails Gawker got their hands on are legitimate:

ARLINGTON, VA — Today, McCain-Palin 2008 Campaign Manager Rick Davis issued the following statement concerning reports about Governor Palin’s email and an invasion of privacy:
“This is a shocking invasion of the Governor’s privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment.”

This makes us think it’s probably a good time for McCain to figure out the Google, but maybe avoid email. Also, we couldn’t help but notice that over at Gawker the Palin email post has thus far received approximately 160,000 hits, meaning, if the Gawker pay scale of $5/1000 hits is correct, Pareene has pocketed $800 and counting on this post alone. Who says there’s no money in this blogging thing?
