For SoCal Porsche Lovers, This is the Only News That Matters

According to UK publication Auto Express, Porsche’s new Macan SUV will get its first preview at this fall’s Los Angeles Auto Show, ahead of a spring 2014 release. Which makes sense, since the U.S. is the auto maker’s number one market and, within that territory, California leads the state pack.

You’ll have to click through to see four exclusive pictures of the Macan. And read here to learn what the name means. The good news is that this SUV has a very reasonable MSRP of around $47,000 U.S. From the Express report:

The Macan will be based on the same modular MLB platform that underpins the Audi Q5, but with greater use of aluminium components. This will mean a weight saving of 130kg over the Q5 – more than the reduction the Audi A3 and other compact VW Group models achieved by adopting the MQB platform.

Hollywood Reporter Delivers a Leno Lollapalooza

You’d think a guy who took a huge pay cut in 2012 on behalf of one of NBC’s few TV ratings hits would be bullet proof within the network’s executive ranks. But while Matthew Belloni’s Hollywood Reporter cover story about Jay Leno does not pinpoint the two “high-level industry sources” that leaked information to colleague Kim Masters for a March 1 item, the embattled Tonight Show host clearly believes the bleed was carved from the Peacock. Rather than, say, a Big Four talent agency or entertainment attorney’s office.

From Belloni’s piece:

Sources say Leno, when he signed his most recent deal, expected it could be his last at the network. But he is said to have been upset by what he perceived to be an NBC leak to THR and by the prospect of another messy transition that would play out in the press.

Can’t blame (the soon-to-be 63-year-old) Leno for that. No comedian likes to be so consistently heckled, even a road warrior like Leno. The prospect of 16 more months of media-amplified cat calls of “You suck!” is no laughing matter.

Eli Broad Confirms His Interest in LA Times

Austin Beutner was front and center in LA Weekly‘s recent look at potential LA Times bidders. Tonight, he is connected once again to billionaire Eli Broad and the non-profit vision previously outlined by Hillel Aron.

The big difference is that Broad is now making it official. From The Hollywood Reporter item by west coast business editor Paul Bond:

“Mr. Broad has always believed in local ownership of the Times and would be interested in joining with others to buy the paper,” Broad spokeswoman Karen Denne tells THR.

THR Connects Muslim Film to Santa Clarita Backlot

Blue Cloud Movie Ranch, located 30 miles north of Los Angeles, is currently for sale. Price tag: $15 million.

Unfortunately for owner Rene Veluzat, reports like this one this afternoon by Paul Bond in the Hollywood Reporter are likely to scare off buyers. All because in August 2011, a portion of the 100-acre facility in Saugus known as “Baghdad Square” was used as a filming location for the now infamous world-shaking screed Innocence of Muslims. Per Bond’s report:

JAG and Paramount and myself, we built this entire set for the JAG TV series,” says Veluzat in a YouTube video where he describes his movie ranch. On Thursday, though, that video was made “private” and protected by a password.

Get Ready for Rotten Tomatoes Radio

Some of the liveliest content on rottentomatoes.com can be found in the comments to individual reviews as well as on the reader boards. Starting Thursday June 7, that same general flow will hit the airwaves of Sirius XM Radio.

Per an announcement first tipped to The Hollywood Reporter’s Paul Bond, the site’s editor-in-chief Matt Atchity (pictured) will host a weekly one-hour call-in show. It’s a natural brand extension and an indication of how Warner Bros. is focused on adding value to its Flixster-crowned property:

Atchity will host Rotten Tomatoes Radio from the company’s Los Angeles headquarters. “My staff and I love movies, and joking and debating about movies fuels a lot of what we do on our website,” Atchity said. “We look forward to sharing those discussions — and arguments – every week with Sirius XM listeners.”

Atlas Shrugs Off Bad Reviews, Does Boffo Merchandising BO

Much gets written about motion picture merchandising deals, ever since a guy named George Lucas showed how profitable that end of the business could be. Today, in an article about the surprisingly strong first-weekend box office average of Atlas Shrugged: Part 1, veteran Hollywood Reporter staffer Paul Bond also reveals some interesting tchotchke info.

Apparently, the marquee item at the movie’s e-commerce store, a $159 bracelet like the one worn by Taylor Schilling‘s heroine Dagny Taggart (pictured), is already on back-order. Producer John Aglialoro says merchandise has been flying off the shelves to six continents. Just imagine if the producers were not limited in their facsimile activities:

When Aglialoro obtained rights to the movie almost 19 years ago, he also got rights to sell such items as T-shirts, mugs, posters, and even jewelry, though not dolls, video games, and other “interesting exceptions.”
