American Idol Raises Curtain on 12th Season with Cameo From WKTU’s Cubby Bryant

If you watched opening night of American Idol on Fox (WNYW), you saw the unveiling of the new look for the venerable singing competition. The 12th season introduces us to judges Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj, and Mariah Carey, while Randy Jackson and host Ryan Seacrest are the holdovers.

The two-hour premiere of the best and worst auditions began in New York (officially in Newark), and to set the scene Fox used a brief clip of WKTU veteran DJ Paul “Cubby” Bryant from his morning radio program.

Moments later Bryant and his followers took to Twitter for his “victory lap” on the popular, if not waning, show.

“OMG! You guys are amazing! I’m on @americanidol for 2 seconds and I feel the love! Thanks everybody! Seriously! Thanks for the tweets!”

Actually, it was closer to six seconds, although Bryant’s on-camera appearance lasted less than two seconds.

WKTU Morning Man Paul ‘Cubby’ Bryant Re-Ups With Station

Christmas came a bit early for WKTU morning host Paul ‘Cubby’ Bryant. The veteran air personality won a healthy contract extension, keeping him as morning host at the Clear Channel station through 2016–a rare feat in today’s economy. He hosts KTU Mornings with Cubby and features sidekick and traffic reporter Cindy Vero.

Bryant took over a.m. drive in 2008. Prior to that, Bryant co-host the syndicated morning show with Whoopi Goldberg from 2006 to 2008.  It was heard on ‘KTU until November 2007.

Bryant first gained popularity in New York at sister station Z100/WHTZ as afternoon jock from 1996 to 2006.

“I’m beyond excited to work with people I love on and off the air for many more years to come,” Bryant says. “Our morning show has the best listeners ever and they are the reason for our success. It’s because of them I get excited each morning to get up early and hit the airwaves.”
