This Interview Cost Pee Wee Herman $975

Had the earliest version of Nickelodeon’s green slime actually been dumped on a human being, the results would have probably been similar to what happened in the late 1990s to comic book artist and San Diego Reader contributor Jay Allen Sanford.

As Sanford recalls today, his unauthorized Contemporary Bio-Graphics treatment of Paul Reubens‘ alter ego Pee Wee Herman eventually led to a one-on-one interview at the actor’s LA home. In character, Reubens playfully at one point dumped on Sanford’s head some old and, it turns out, rancid green slime, resulting in a very strong reaction:

Reubens was still apologizing the next day when he phoned to make sure I’d lived to tell. He kindly picked up the tab for $975, which covered the cost of my hospital visit and of the hair stylist later called upon to “fix” those spots where slime-encrusted hair had been excised from my shaggy ‘do.

(VIDEO) Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Laverne and Shirley, and Aretha Franklin Among the 2012 TV Land Award Winners

The red carpet was rolled out Saturday night for the TV Land Awards 10th anniversary celebration. Dozen of stars from TV, movies, and music made the trip to the Lexington Avenue Armory for the festivities.

Named this year’s Pop Culture Award winner, Pee Wee’s Playhouse, Paul Reubens was recognized for his alter ego Pee Wee Herman. The Saturday morning children show, Pee Wee’s Playhouse was a multiple Emmy winner during its five years on CBS. Reubens created the character and program at the Los Angeles improv troupe, the Groundlings. The TV show featured the late Phil Hartman, Lawrence Fishburne, and S. Epatha Merkerson, a future Emmy winner for her work on Law and Order.

Reubens tells FishbowlNY in the video clip that it was an easy transition making Pee Wee’s Playhouse children-themed.

Weird Movie Title, Even Weirder PR Pitch

To do full justice to the name of the following indie film spoof, imagine reading the title aloud in the style of Pee-wee Herman‘s wind-up delivery. It’s called Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Hellbound, Flesh-Eating, Crawling, Alien & Zombified, Subhumanoid Living Dead… Part 5

Even stranger is the offer being made by the parody film’s hostess, former Long Island foster child Angelica, to a list of celebrities that includes Hollywood comedy royalty Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Seth MacFarlane, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. If one of these targets agrees to review the movie, she and her partners (director James Riffel, co-writer Mark Zobian) are promising to pass on a check for $10,000 that can be donated to a charity of the celebrity’s choice.
