Perez Hilton Fronts Another Fashion Disaster

Mario Lavandeira, who makes a good part of his Perez Hilton living ridiculing celebrities, is often caught in the same sort of crossfire. Last fall for example, he placed second on Out magazine’s list of worst dressed gay men, behind Boy George.

Intentionally or not, Hilton added to this wretched reputation when he attended the 45th anniversary bash for The Advocate sporting a Juicy Couture jacket, Longchamp bag, Loudmouth Golf pants and Jeremy Scott shoes. After he shared the photo at right on his site, readers were not amused:

Chrstn7: Sorry Perez but that outfit is a hot mess!! You are trying to be like Lady Gaga by putting on crazy outfits to make a statement but it’s only going to put you on the worst dressed lists.

Alliestp: Do you always have to look like you got dressed in a dumpster?

INTERVIEW: Michael Lewittes on Becoming a Gossip Cop

Long before e-mail bulletins, tweets and Drudge Report siren headlines, there were alpha-numeric pagers and pay phones. As veteran east coast journalist Michael Lewittes recalls, these now antiquated devices played a key role in one of his earliest moments of reporter triumph.

“One night I was out to dinner and drinks with New York’s police commissioner and deputy commissioner,” Lewittes (pictured) tells FishbowlLA. “Across the pagers came the message that Tupac Shakur has been shot (not when he was murdered, but a previous shooting).”

“I got the scoop,” he continues. “I had to drop a quarter in a pay phone to call the desk at the New York Daily News. Just a few hours later, I was on the subway — en route to work — and the riders were reading the Daily News and our rivals, the New York Post. But only the Daily News had the Tupac exclusive that he had been shot outside of a recording studio on the West Side in New York. And it remained a Daily News exclusive all day long on the radio and news broadcasts.”

“Naturally, today that story would have been picked up in a split second, spread across the globe, and no one would have known it was broken by the Daily News.”

The era of “hat tip” entertainment journalism is replete with theft, cacophonous forward-momentum and miraculously scrubbed errant reports. Which for Lewittes, who moved on from the Daily News to Cosmopolitan, the Post, US Weekly and Access Hollywood, frames his latest gig. Since 2009, he has been calling out bad entertainment reporting on his well-respected website gossipcop.com. And he has, in part, Perez Hilton to thank for this.

Anaheim Gives Perez Hilton a Warm Welcome

Great job, WWE fans.

You didn’t let me down Monday night when Perez Hilton was introduced as the guest ring announcer during the Raw SuperShow from the Honda Center in Anaheim.

The kids in my section were clueless about who Hilton was, but the adults did their part and showered the gossip blogger with boos during his atrocious segment.

That’s the first and last time we will see Hilton in a WWE ring.

Perez Hilton to Serve as WWE Guest Ring Announcer

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is mixing it up with the WWE, serving as the guest ring announcer this Monday for the Divas match on the Raw SuperShow from the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Yeah, that should go over well with the 15,000 rabid WWE fans who will be in attendance (including yours truly) and likely aren’t fans of Hilton or his blog empire.

The Divas are contributing bloggers to Hilton’s newest project, FitPerez.com, a blog focused on the fitness, health and wellness of celebrities.

Good luck out there, Perez. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Perez Hilton Talks to The Guardian

With Lady Gaga set to kick off the four-part ITV2 series Perez Hilton: Superfan this Wednesday, the Internet’s original celebrity gossiper has been doing some transatlantic PR.

It’s evident from the lede of John Plunkett‘s article in The Guardian that the reporter is catering to a more erudite British audience. FishbowlLA can’t imagine too many American daily newspaper profile pieces that would begin like this:

Perez Hilton makes for an unlikely Saul on the road to Damascus.

Kinder, Gentler Perez Hilton Launches Perezitos.com

As Perez Hilton approaches the one-year anniversary of a redemptive journalistic makeover, he is adding in kind to a web empire that already includes spinoffs CocoPerez.com and PerezFit.com.

The newest cog in the Perez portfolio is Perezitos.com, focused on celebrity parents and their kids, with advice from pediatricians thrown in for good measure. The man born Mario Lavandeira tells Reuters LA he’s thrilled with his new M.O.:

“I’ve had some people say they miss the old Perez but thankfully, the majority of the comments are people embracing this change and direction, and at the end of the day, the reason I made the shift was for myself,” he said. “I can still be critical, and I am, and I can still talk about celebrities, but I can do it in a way that’s not mean and hurtful and nasty. My new motto is ‘be sassy…’”

TMZ, Radar Steer Clear of New Group Hollywood Leaks

Launched August 19 via Twitter, the self-proclaimed Anonymous hacker group offshoot Hollywood Leaks has so far busted into Julianne Hough‘s cell phone, the email account of a cast member of the upcoming Tom Cruise movie Rock of Ages and, most notably over the weekend, the cell phone of rapper Kreayshawn.

Considering that this gang is in the business of sharing the same kind of illicit celebrity materials as TMZ and Radar Online, without occasionally having to negotiate a purchase price or pay a licensing fee, it would be interesting to read a tweet from Harvey Levin about Hollywood Leaks or get some kind of POV from the National Enquirer adjacent Radar reporters. But so far, no such luck.

Perez Hilton and LA’s LBGT Community

Over at KCET, Japhy Grant writes about a recent run-in with gossip blogger Perez Hilton at a West Hollywood GYM Bar dodgeball game. At first glance, the piece may seem like celebrity namedropping, but a full read gives interesting insights on Hilton’s tenuous place in LA’s LBGT community.

Perez and I go way back. We were friends in college, though that friendship took a turn for the worse after I penned a 2006 Salon article entitled “Perez Hilton’s Gay Witch Hunt” in which I accused him of being a “Savonarola in a pink pants suit” after he made the claim that drawing fake semen on Clay Aiken’s face made him a civil rights advocate….

Mary Hart Gets Ready to Say Goodbye

There’s a whole lot of Mary Hart love being shown in the media this week ahead of her final appearance tonight on Entertainment Tonight. And she deserves every bit of it.

Hart is the Johnny Carson of the entertainment TV news magazine world, retiring at the top of her personal game after 29 years on the air. Joining her for an ET send-off taped yesterday were a number of her former male co-hosts, including the best one of them all, John Tesh. Those two had major on-air chemistry, the kind that LA TV station execs dream of when envisioning ideal local news anchor pairings. The latest crowning tributes include one from Brooks Barnes of the New York Times:

“Without Mary, ET starts to look like what it is–kind of dear and not particularly edgy,” said Martin Kaplan, the director of the Norman Lear Center for the study of entertainment and society at the University of Southern California. “I don’t know how large the cultural niche is for dear in a Perez Hilton, TMZ, Gawker world.”
