No ‘Fire Fiend’? Post Passes On Braunstein

Following yesterday afternoon’s sentencing of Peter Braunstein, we thought for sure that the New York Post‘s headline gurus — who railed on the “fire fiend” for months it seemed — would have a new jailhouse pun up their collective sleeves. No such luck on the cover (they had a bigger “piece” to play with, and the Daily News borrowed “Fire Fiend”) though Andrea Peyser utilized the letter P for her prisoner pokey punditry:

Braunstein Trial Update: ‘I’m Going To Kill Anna Wintour’

ellies_2007_anna_wintour_sm.jpgPerhaps the crime “wasn’t substantial enough to grip the rest of the nation” — a.k.a those outside of WWD‘s subscription list. Ludicrous but, sadly, true. But thanks to Peter Braunstein‘s “monstrous” manifesto, which chronicles his fantasies of killing Vogue editrix Anna Wintour, his trial just got a lot more interesting.

“I’m going to kill Anna Wintour because I feel like it,” Braunstein wrote in a monstrous manifesto that cops found after he was arrested for dressing up like a firefighter and sexually abusing a former co-worker on Halloween 2005. Braunstein wrote that he wasn’t content to just shoot Vogue magazine’s editor-in-chief, because that would be “too impersonal.”

The “Fire Fiend” fantasized about killing the Devil after he was fired by Women’s Wear Daily over a gripe he had “raising a ruckus about only getting one ticket to the Vogue Fashion Awards. Braunstein described how she would be “escorted by eunuchs to a place in Hell run entirely by large rats.”

Manhattan Justice Thomas Farber ruled that the passage could be introduced by prosecutors to the jury, but that Braunstein’s apparent research on “Son of Sam” David Berkowitz, Andrew Cunanan — who murdered fashion designer Gianni Versace — Columbine killers Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris and the Hannibal Lecter character was not admissible.

Catching up on the trial of ex-WWD reporter Peter Braunstein, accused of brutally holding a former co-worker against her will in her apartment:

    The New York Timescourtroom account:

Her demeanor on the witness stand was calm and crisp as she testified on Monday about being dosed with chloroform, stripped and tied to her bed by a masked man on Oct. 31, 2005.

    From The Post:

Yesterday, on day two of testimony in the grotesque and riveting case, the focus was on the victim’s utter emotional collapse once he left her apartment and her 13-hour ordeal finally ended … “There are people in uniform standing out there,” she told the 911 operator. “But I don’t know if they’re police. I don’t know. I don’t trust anybody. Please, help me!”

    The Daily News weighs in:

And as the victim was rushed to the hospital, cops found the sick parting message that Braunstein had scrawled in makeup on the mirror. “BYE – HOPE THINGS TURN AROUND FOR U SOON,” it said. Grillo and Robinette were followed on the stand yesterday by an emergency room doctor who said the victim suffered chemical burns and severe rope burns. The doctor said there was no evidence of rape.
