Peter Kaplan, Editorial Director at Fairchild, and Dirk Standen, Style.com’s Editor-in-Chief, are now prepping the magazine for a fourth quarter launch.

Launching the print venture is the (sort of) easy part, making it successful, that’s another story. But apparently Fairchild feels confident that the Style.com brand will carry it through. One piece of advice: Put Kim Kardashian on the cover of every issue. Like her or not, that woman moves print.

As The Awl points out for anyone keeping track of such things, this move makes “for a solid 10 out of 10 departures in the last four or so months alone all being women and gay men (as far as we can tell from outside).”

Other names that have been tossed into the ring have included former Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria, who declined the position, and, as The New York Observer reports, Daily Beast executive editor Edward Felsenthal. And then there’s this interesting anecdote:

The Biggest Move in Magazines: Stephen Adler leaving BusinessWeek.
When editor Stephen Adler announced his departure from BusinessWeek this October following the magazine’s sale to Bloomberg LP, he wasn’t just making a statement, he was starting a trend. Soon he was followed by some of his former colleagues, like John Byrne and BusinessWeek‘s president Keith Fox, who decided to stay with magazine’s original parent, McGraw-Hill. (Not to mention all of those who involuntarily left the pub not long after.) It takes a lot of chutzpah to up and quit your editor gig in the middle of this turbulent media landscape, it takes even more to get your coworkers to come with you. Fortunately for Adler, he’s already landed another gig at Thomson Reuters.

Politico reports that Benson will also be leaving The Observer by the end of the year to join McGeveran in his new project, although details about it remain unclear. (We can’t wait to find out what it is.)

As Michael Calderone points out, much of the old guard has changed at the Jared Kushner-owned paper this year, with longtime editor Peter Kaplan‘s departure in May and layoffs in June. Last week, Kushner named former Portfolio editor Kyle Pope to the top editor spot, replacing McGeveran.

The announcement comes just a week after McGeveran announced that he would be stepping down from his post at the paper, which he as held since longtime editor Peter Kaplan left the pub in May. Pope will be starting at The Observer on Monday, and will work side-by-side with McGeveren for a few weeks to ensure a smooth transition. The December 9 issue will be Pope’s first as editor.

Pope most recently worked as one of two top editors at Condé Nast‘s business glossy until it folded earlier this year. He started his career at The Wall Street Journal, where he won a Pulitzer Prize as part of the paper’s team covering September 11. Pope has also worked as a freelance contributor for The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.

Thomas, a recent Morning Media Menu podcast guest, wrote about his decision to leave the Observer on his personal blog Midas Watch (which has the same name as his Observer column) on Sunday, and sent a letter out to friends.

“It looks as if the NY Observer and I are parting company for good,” he said. “The new owner stands pretty much squarely on the side of those whom I consider the bad guys in the great civic and financial equations that govern our parlous existence. That his prospective father-in-law is Donald Trump, a person known to earlier readers of the NYO ‘Midas Watch’ as ‘the Prince of Swine,’ only adds to the confusion.”

Thomas said he’ll stick to blogging, about “books, food, the media, golf, music, Wall Street, manners, the writer’s trade, Brooklyn, local politics, the Hamptons,” and anything else that interests him.

“I think we’re definitely at a bottom for newspapers,” Kushner told New York‘s Gabriel Sherman a couple of weeks after the layoffs on June 5. “Once this Russian winter is over, once the papers fail that should fail, you’ll see a resurgence. I think the Observer two years from now will be a very viable entity.”

What the article does reveal about the Observer is Kushner’s relationship with Kaplan and the editor’s possible reasons for his seemingly sudden departure.

“In truth, Jared and Kaplan’s relationship swerved between grudging respect and conflict,” the article says. “Though they grew up in the same part of New Jersey and both went to Harvard, in other ways they were the oddest of couples. Jared found a lot of the paper incomprehensible and fuddy-duddyish, while Kaplan couldn’t quite get over the fact that Jared was the same age as many of his reporters. Kaplan at first tried to mentor Jared like one of his writers. But that only worked for a while.”

Then Kushner hired Bob Sommer, a former publicist, to work as president of the Observer and pushed a redesign, which included the addition of a real estate section, reflecting the young tycoon’s interest in the industry.

“He also insisted on shorter stories and drove Kaplan to shovel stuff onto the Web, which Kaplan thought was the wrong strategy,” the New York article reports. “‘We had benchmarks,’ Sommer says. ‘And Peter hated it.’”

Daily Intel has a report that newly appointed editor-in-chief Tom McGeveran is handing out pink slips today, while Gawker has a tentative list of those who are rumored to be victims of the axe, including Matt Haber, Spencer Morgan, Doree Shafrir, Chris Shott, Peter Stevenson and John Vorwald.

More: The New York Times Media Decoder blog has more information about the bloodbath, revealing that a bulk of the layoffs came from the newsroom, one third of which got the axe.

“Reducing the size of our reporting staff was not an easy decision to make,” Christopher Barnes, president of the Observer Media Group, told the Times in a written statement. “Unfortunately, the New York Observer is not immune to the economic pressures being felt industry-wide. The reality is we had to cut back in order to move forward.”
