Morning Media Newsfeed: AMC Buys Stake in BBC America | CNN Announces High Profits

AMC Networks Buys 49.9 Percent Stake in BBC America (TVNewser)
AMC Networks has agreed to purchase a 49.9 percent stake in BBC America from BBC Worldwide for $200 million. AMC Networks will look for greater distribution for BBC World News in the U.S. B&C BBC Worldwide will retain a 50.1 percent equity stake in the cable channel, while AMC Networks will have operational control of BBCA, including affiliate and advertising sales, though it will still be consistent with BBC’s editorial standards and policies. THR The cable networks company and the commercial arm of U.K. public broadcaster BBC announced the deal Thursday after reports of their talks first emerged over the summer. The channel airs such BBC favorites as Doctor Who, Sherlock, Top Gear and Planet Earth. AMC Networks operates the AMC, Sundance, WE tv and IFC channels, and can now add the so-far independent BBC America when it negotiates carriage fees, giving both partners increased leverage in talks with pay-TV operators. WSJ The deal comes as the biggest pay-TV distributors are consolidating, prompting analyst speculation that content players will also have to seek greater scale. Variety Executives at both companies portrayed the arrangement as one borne out of a desire to gain greater reach for premium content that attracts high-income audiences. The two sides have worked together in the recent past. The two have collaborated on series including Top of The Lake and The Honourable Woman as well as the coming program One Child. AMC Networks and BBC Television have agreed to continue to jointly pursue a number of content investment opportunities on a range of future projects, both through BBC America and other AMC Networks channels. BBC America is to be managed as a standalone asset within AMC’s portfolio.

Peter Lattman Named Deputy Business Editor of NY Times

The New York Times has named Peter Lattman deputy business editor. Lattman most recently served as media editor. In his new role, Lattman will continue to oversee media news while also contributing to general business news.

“Media reporters will continue to write for BizDay, Culture and other sections, with Mr. Media himself, David Carr, anchoring the Monday business report,” wrote the Times’ business editor, Dean Murphy, in a memo. “More broadly, the media team will benefit from greater interaction and crosspollination with reporters and editors from tech, DealBook and the other clusters — and vice versa. In short, we’ll see collaboration, elevation and innovation among a whole new mix of talented reporters and editors.”

NYT Reporters Recommend a Few Good Books About Journalism

TheImperfectionistsCoverIn this weekend’s Sunday Book Review, there is a fun, brief item from John Williams. Echoing the general theme of David Carr‘s latest column, he asked Carr as well as Ravi Somaiya, Jonathan Mahler and Peter Lattman to highlight their favorite books about journalism.

The most intriguing comment comes from Lattman. Like Mahler, he chose a work of fiction rather than non-fiction, but not for the reasons you might assume:

Lattman selected The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman, about a “dying English-language newspaper in Rome. This debut novel from 2010 does a better job of capturing a newsroom and its characters than any non-fiction book I’ve read.”

Emily Steel Headed to the New York Times

EmilySteelTwitterProfilePicIf you’re the New York Times, how do you hope to fight against a week of historically bad PR? Well, one way certainly is to herald – heading into the weekend – the imminent newsroom arrival of another talented woman.

Here’s today’s memo confirming that Emily Steel, in the wake of Brian Stelter‘s flight to CNN, will be moving over from the Financial Times to join the paper’s media desk:

The cheers you’re now hearing around the newsroom are from our colleagues who once worked with Emily at the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times. They had urged us to hire Emily, and having competed against her, it didn’t take much convincing.

Emily spent six years at the Journal and the last two at the FT as its media and marketing correspondent. At the Journal, she contributed several stories to the paper’s Pulitzer-finalist “End of Privacy” series about the pervasive tracking of Americans online, including her high-impact piece about privacy breaches at Facebook. Her media reporting at the FT has been topnotch, including her recent coverage of the proposed Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger.

Jonathan Mahler Joins NY Times as Media Reporter

Jonathan Mahler GJonathan Mahler — author of Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bronx is Burning — is joining The New York Times as a corporate media reporter.

Mahler had been a contributor to Bloomberg View, the New York Times Magazine and the New York Times Book Review. His work has appeared in a variety of publications, including The New Republic, New York and The Washington Post.

Mahler has also written two other books —  The Challenge and Death Comes to Happy Valley. He tweeted that he was “very excited” to join the paper.

In a memo announcing the hire, Peter Lattman, the Times’ media editor, wrote that Mahler “will cover the industry’s biggest companies and the moguls who run them, along with the seismic changes transforming their businesses.”

PandoDaily Acquires NSFW Corp to Double Down on Investigative Reporting (PandoDaily)
There are three people who have long been on my dream team to help me build PandoDaily. One of them I’ve still gotta work on. The second is Mike Tatum, who keeps saying no and then keeps doing work for us for free anyway. The third is joining us by way of acquisition. I’m sure regular readers can guess who I am talking about: Paul Carr. I’m thrilled to announce that PandoDaily has reached a deal to acquire his company, NSFW Corp. FishbowlNY The deal comes on the heels of a recent chronicling on PandoDaily of Carr’s journalism crowd-funding efforts. Looks like he just accelerated that initiative and we are personally thrilled that NSFW Corp will live on. The Guardian Carr’s last venture was surprisingly old-school. NSFW Corp, a news site that billed itself as “The Economist written by the Daily Show,” put out a print magazine — and it even put up a paywall. Despite winning fans, it didn’t make money. Poynter / MediaWire NSFW Corp tried to raise money to keep going independently in September. It laid off three people earlier in November.

NY Times Promotes Bruce Headlam and Peter Lattman

The New York Times has promoted Bruce Headlam and Peter Lattman. Details are below, followed by the memo from Jill Abramson, executive editor at the Times, that announced the changes.

  • Headlam, who has been with the Times’ media desk since 2008, will move to video, where he’ll become managing editor of video. He’ll report to Abramson. Headlam will be working closely with Rebecca Howard, general manager of video production.
  • Lattman succeeds Headlam as media editor. Lattman joined the Times in 2010. He has been covering Wall Street, white collar crime and more for DealBook since joining the paper.
