Anonymous Website Group Claims to Have Outed Nikki Finke

MankaBrosNikkiFinkeIllustrationA turbulent week of media coverage for Nikki Finke just got a whole lot more turbulent.

Following pieces by BuzzFeed‘s Kate Aurthur and NYT‘s Ravi Somaiya about Finke’s current settlement talks with PMC, a mysterious new website – nikkistink.com – has gone live today with footage it claims is that of the reclusive Hollywood journalist. For those in LA who care about such things – and there are many – the video and multi-camera-angle screen grabs depict a woman the site claims is Finke getting into a black Town car.

According to two sources who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter on the condition of anonymity, one of whom has met Finke in person in recent years, the woman in the NikkiStink.com video is the real Nikki Finke. A call and email to Finke were not immediately returned.

Penske to Acquire Fairchild Fashion Media

FFMLogoCondé Nast wouldn’t comment. But according to New York Times media reporter Ravi Somaiya, Jay Penske is about to add an impressive group of media properties to his PMC empire.

From Somaiya’s report:

Condé Nast plans to sell Fairchild Fashion Media, the group behind trade publications like Women’s Wear Daily and Footwear News, to Penske Media for around $100 million, according to a person familiar who has been briefed on the deal.

Fairchild’s employees will go with the new company, the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal an as-yet unannounced deal, said.

Mike Fleming Cautions Those Who Choose Nikki Finke

Fleming confirms it was his idea to bring Finke back into the Deadline fold. He details how the negotiations with PMC chief Jay Penske fell apart and ends this latest conversation with former Variety boss Bart with a stern warning:

“Since the thrust of her new site seems to be Deadline-bashing, I feel comfortable in making this clear: those who choose to break their news with her will need to be happy with that result. You might get a scant mention, but you’ll find no love here.”

Here’s the first one. And… Because we can never for whatever reason get on-the-record cooperation from PMC, we intentionally did not go to them for comment. If, after reading this item, someone from that end wants to chime in, we’ll be happy to update below.*

Through the grapevine, we hear that Jay Penske, Mike Fleming Jr. and Nellie Andreeva are actively trying to convince Nikki Finke to return to the Deadline fold. Perhaps this has something to do with the fact that Deadline, minus Finke, now gets traffic-beat by TheWrap. But that’s just a guess. The discussions, we’re told, are ongoing.

Variety EIC: ‘Paywall Did Nothing But Severely Limit Our Audience’

At the recent 63rd annual MAGGIE Awards, where Variety won three awards including Most Improved Publication/Trade & Consumer, the 109-year-old outlet’s digital editor-in-chief Andrew Wallenstein delivered an afternoon keynote about changes in the PMC era.

Although much of what Wallenstein had to say is common knowledge at this point, it’s still rare in the Hollywood trades world to have the opportunity to hear a key editorial team member speak so frankly and in detail about the inner workings of the operation. Wallenstein joked at one point that he does not recommend doing a full website revamp in three months; he said website traffic has increased, since the elimination of the paywall, by 400%; and noted that the company’s new offices in west LA were set up for “year-round video production.”

Where Did All Those @Variety Twitter Followers Come From?

That’s a question that caught the attention of Hollywood trade watchers late Friday thanks to Ben Dreyfuss, engagement editor for Mother Jones. He noticed and shared that in late September, the follower count for Jay Penske‘s publishing concern had a “boffo” day.

Twenty-Four Nikki Finke Hours That Shook the (Hollywood) World

In July 2009, after closing a deal to sell her Hollywood news website to Jay Penske‘s Mail.com Media Corp, Nikki Finke told LA Times reporter James Rainey that “she sometimes wished she didn’t have to sleep, so she could work 24 hours a day.” What a difference four years and a parent-company sideline purchase can make.

Finke told Defamer’s Beejoli Shah Thursday that she has “been inundated with administrative duties” and that Penske is forcing her to work “seven days a week.” She then added the coup-de-hyperbole-grace: “Penske somehow thinks he owns me like I’m his slave.”

A Tale of Two Lists: PMC vs. The Hollywood Reporter

This morning at 2:50 a.m. PT, Nikki Finke leveled a bunch of Miley Cyrus-like accusations at The Hollywood Reporter. Relying on data compiled by parent company PMC, she claimed that the bulkhead of THR‘s latest monthly uniques and page views connects to the Hollywood trade world’s equivalent of twerking at the VMAs.

There’s only one problem. Her top-viewed September/October THR articles list (above) is completely different from the one shared in response by The Hollywood Reporter (see below). For example, Justin Bieber appears at both ends, but on the PMC list it’s articles about plastic surgery and the song “Believe” while THR lists a Batman vs. Superman-related post.

So who’s right? The logical assumption is that THR has a better handle on its own Web stats. But we also figured that PMC must be pretty sure about its methodology to tell Finke it was OK to publish this internal data.
