Porn & Pop Star Andrea True Dead at 68

One of porn’s first crossover success stories, Andrea True went from X-rated roles in Deep Throat Part II and Lady on the Couch to the top of the pop charts. Her breakout disco song “More More More” is one you’ve almost certainly heard, even if you don’t remember the name. The tune has been licensed for use in numerous advertisements, films, and television programs, including The Simpsons. And True wasn’t a one-hit wonder, either — several subsequent singles also landed on the charts, though none had the success of “More, More, More.”

True passed away on November 7 at a hospital in a Kingston, NY, and the cause of death has not been released. True had largely remained out of the public eye for decades, after throat surgery in 1980 put an end to her singing career, and her attempt to make a comeback in porn failed. We’ll let you know if more details about her death become available. In the meantime, let’s remember her as she was:

Adult Industry Healthcare Clinic Gets Screwed, Shuts Down

AIM Medical Associates, a non-profit healthcare foundation that catered to the needs of adult industry performers, has closed its doors. AIM has faced a number of difficulties recently, most notably when their computer system was hacked and patient’s information was leaked online. AIM had also become the target of California health administrators, who demanded that the clinic reveal the identity of an HIV+ performer, despite it being illegal for AIM to do so.

And then there’s this, from the Free Speech Coalition:

AIM has suffered a two-year campaign waged by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) and is currently a defendant in litigation associated with AHF involving patient medical privacy. AHF also has struck out at several companies and talent agents in their attempt to mandate condom use on adult sets.

.XXX Is Porn’s New .Com

Today the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the non-profit organization that coordinates the Internet’s global name and address system, approved a new domain for porn. The .xxx domain will function like the .com or .net part of a url, but it will be only be available to the adult entertainment industry.

It’s a gift the porn industry didn’t exactly want. Many in the adult industry, which is headquartered in the San Fernando Valley, expressed vocal opposition to the establishment of the new domain, arguing it would cost the porn companies millions of dollars, and increase censorship. The porn industry, like traditional media, has been facing decreasing revenues as from the proliferation of free content online.

Can a Porn Star Become a Serious Film Actress?

In this town, porn has always been a dead end for actresses. It’s a rare occurrence for a porn actress to appear in a Hollywood production, and when she does it’s almost always to play an oversexed character. But public attitudes toward porn are changing. As more and more adult stars hang out at Hollywood parties, date Hollywood stars and make small appearances in Hollywood productions, the stage is being set for a crossover star.

Our money is on Sasha Grey.

Penthouse Mag Founder Bob Guccione Dead At 79

Bob Guccione, the founder and publisher of Penthouse magazine, died Wednesday in Plano, Texas after a long battle with lung cancer.

Brooklyn-born Guccione began Penthouse while living in England in 1965. He brought the mag to America in 1969, and eventually grew it into a media empire. Penthouse magazine provided a raunchy alternative to Playboy, showing pubic hair at a time when doing so was considered obscene.

Guccione went on to launch other magazines, including Omni, Longevity, and Viva. Notably, it was at Viva that Anna Wintour had her first job as a fashion editor.

Several Porn Companies Halt Production Due To AIDS Scare

Since news broke Tuesday that a prolific porn actor had tested positive for HIV, several adult entertainment companies have halted production — and several more haven’t. Porn is a multi-million dollar business, and concern for the well being of the performers has always been low. Despite a strong push by health advocates for condom use, few porn shoots actually bother with condoms, the government refuses to mandate such changes, and consumers don’t seem to care. Many porn companies in town continue keep shooting, despite not knowing all the facts surrounding the infection, including who might have been exposed.

The companies that have halted porn production are Vivid Entertainment, Wicked Pictures (which has a policy of mandatory condom use), Hustler Video, Digital Playground, Jennaration X Studios, Girlfriends Films and Kick Ass Pictures. Remember those names next time you’re shopping for porn, and buy from a company that made the expensive but responsible choice to put their performer’s health first.
