Chelsea Handler to Host Talk Show on Netflix (LostRemote)
Late-night comedian Chelsea Handler is moving from TV to Netflix, announcing Thursday she’ll host a talk show on the streaming service in 2016. NYT The idea could appear counterintuitive because Netflix, the subscription streaming video service, has thus far only posted original series in their entirety, not day by day or even week by week. But this apparent incongruity may be what appealed to Handler, a comic who has been public about seeking a new and different landing place after declaring that she was planning to leave E!, where for seven years she has hosted Chelsea Lately, a daily late-night show. WSJ Netflix will likely release the talk show episodes in a different way than it has debuted its other original series, where it is released all the episodes at once to encourage “binge viewing.” THR / The Live Feed “If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested. I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move,” said Handler in a statement. The Washington Post / Style Blog Before this, Handler made no secret that she despised the E! network — and her manager told the media she was actively looking for another gig. When E! announced the series finale of her talk show this summer, she offered the most lukewarm departure statement ever: “I will always look back at my time on E! as most people look back at their time in college. I’m glad I went.” HuffPost In addition to the talk show, Handler will also be collaborating with Netflix on five comedy specials into next year, including stand-up and docu-comedy specials.

Morning Media Newsfeed: Amazon Unveils Fire Phone | Carney’s Final Briefing

Amazon Launches Smartphone (GalleyCat)
Amazon has gotten into the smartphone business with the launch of the Fire, Amazon’s first smartphone. NYT Though the device is called the Fire phone, Amazon’s new gadget is less a phone than a pocketable cash register hooked directly into the retailer’s intelligent warehouses. And it’s not cheap. The Fire phone sells for $199 with a two-year AT&T contract. Although it also comes with a free one-year subscription to Amazon’s Prime membership, the Fire phone is essentially the same price as high-end phones made by Apple and Samsung. For Amazon, a company whose previous devices have had innovative pricing plans that often involved selling devices at cost, the Fire phone’s uninspired price tag is a surprising disappointment. The Washington Post / The Switch The phone lets you scan products in stores, so that you can buy things directly from Amazon, using a new service called “Firefly.” Users can even use the phone to “listen” to songs or videos, and link users to places to buy them. It can also recognize art, and scan text such as phone numbers and then immediately place a call. The Verge There’s one big difference here: the Fire phone’s interface changes based on how you’re looking at it and how you orient the device. Amazon calls the feature “Dynamic Perspective,” which basically means that some apps on the phone will have a three-dimensional depth to them, and tilting the phone will let you peer around edges, just as you can with real objects. Mashable The history of 3D-type screens in mobile suggests consumers aren’t interested in the feature. The two most notable devices, the HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D, both flopped. The only real 3D success in mobile so far has been the Nintendo 3DS, which is explicitly a game console.

Power 105.1 to Award High School with a Special Prom

Power 105.1/WWPR is offering tri-state high school students the chance for a memorable senior prom. The Clear Channel station is running a contest that will give one lucky high school a “Power Prom,” featuring mixers DJ Envy, DJ Clue, DJ Prostyle, and DJ Self providing the soundtrack to the prom.

Students are asked to take the Knowledge is Power pledge, where they strive to be a local leader, a positive example, and to commit to bettering themselves through higher education or community service.

Those interested can download the registration form at Power1051fm.com for their principal to fill out. The next step is to actually take the Knowlege is Power online pledge and encourage friends as well. The high school that gets the highest percentage of participation will be rewarded with the Power 105.1 Power Prom.

The Knowledge is Power pledge drive runs until May 2, and principals can register their schools until April 27.

For more information on how to enroll your school, go to the website, keyword: Prom

Clear Channel New York Partners With Tribeca Film Festival

Clear Channel Radio New York, the home to Z100, 106.7 Lite FM, WKTU, Q104.3, and Power 105.1, has joined forces with the Tribeca Film Festival.

The New York radio conglomerate will be an on-air, online, and on-site media sponsor for the 2011 film festival.

The 10th annual festival runs from April 20 to May 1.

“Having the physical location of our five New York City radio and digital brands, as well as our 200-plus full and part-time employees, essentially share the same pavement with the team at the Tribeca Film Festival here in lower Manhattan made it a near moral imperative that we do everything in our power to help them promote and deliver an entertaining and compelling series of events in 2011,” said Joe Puglise, president and market manager of Clear Channel New York. “I look forward to continuing to build upon the working relationship we have forged together.”

Ed Lover Gets Friday Nights at WKRS/98.7 Kiss FM

Notable radio and TV personality Ed Lover is now part of Emmis’ 98.7 Kiss FM family.

Lover, who was let go from Power 105.1 in November, will host Friday Night Live from 7 p.m. to midnight starting March 11.

“I am thrilled and honored to be joining the Kiss FM family! I admire the station, love the music, and have been an avid listener for years! God is good!”

“Ed has achieved great success in this market and is very well known and liked with our listeners. He fits in perfectly with the music, the community, and the culture of Kiss FM, Jill Strada, Kiss FM program director, says. “Ed Lover is a legend, and belongs on legendary radio stations.”

The Hollis, N.Y. native, Lover hosted a highly rated morning show on Hot 97 from 1993 to 1998.

Lover, perhaps, is best remembered for co-hosting Yo! MTV Raps in the 1990s.

Power 105 Makes Lineup Changes Official

As we reported on November 23, Power 105.1 (WWPR), following the termination of morning show host Ed Lover, reportedly was about to get rid of their entire on-air staff.

Now the station has, in part, begun the first wave of the lineup changes. As stated on the Power 105 website in a big banner across the page, former Philadelphia DJ Charlamagne Tha God, rumored to join the Clear Channel Urban station, takes hold of mornings with Power afternoon jock DJ Envy, and Sirius’ Angela Yee.

NorthEast Radio Watch reports the aforementioned changes begin on Monday, December 13.

Taking over afternoons (2 p.m. to 6 p.m.) at Power is DJ Prostyle, who has been with station as a producer and mixing DJ on Sundays.  He will also spin records on weekend shows.

Messages left for Power 105.1/Clear Channel executives were not returned.

Ed Lover Out at Power 105.1

WWPR/Power 105.1 has fired its veteran morning man Ed Lover, along with show producer Sarah O’Connor. Lover had been with the Hip-Hop station since its inception in 2002. Originally, he was part of the morning team that featured Doctor Dre and Lisa G. (moved from rival WQHT/Hot 97). The show eventually was switched to afternoon drive.

Lover returned to mornings when Star and Buc Wild left in 2006.

There were changes to the midday shift as well.

Clear Channel ousted midday host Deja Vu with morning co-host Malikah Mallette taking over the slot.
