Jerry Garcia’s Letter to a Vogue Model

RRAuctionLogoSome lucky, wealthy fan of The Grateful Dead is about to meet The Grateful letterhead

Per a report by Fine Books magazine, items up for bid at a forthcoming Boston auction include a rare and rather epic letter by Jerry Garcia. The genesis for the letter was an Upper West Side party, where he met a fashion model. The party took place around the time of a series of performances by the band in the fall of 1980 at Radio City Music Hall.

Two years later, Garcia composed the letter in stages, completing it in June on some Hotel Parker Meridien New York letterhead. From the Fine Books article:

“The rarity of this handwritten letter cannot be overstated,” said Bobby Livingston, executive vice president at RR Auction. “Research indicates no others ever being on the market — even Garcia himself noted, ‘This is the first letter I’ve written in years.’”

Santa Stops NYC Summer Traffic

We’ve written in the past about the increasingly ridiculous start at some radio stations of non-stop holiday music. Well, thanks to some Midtown shenanigans today, a new, even crazier Christmas calendar benchmark has been set.

SantaJohnFoxxRockettes

Per AP drama writer Mark Kennedy, St. Nick and 15 Rockettes were enlisted - spectacularly early – for some promotion of the 2014 edition of their annual extravaganza Radio City Christmas Spectacular:

The calendar says August, but that didn’t stop Santa Claus from visiting midtown Manhattan and snarling a section of Sixth Avenue, much to the bafflement of tourists and the frustration of drivers forced to idle their vehicles.

Fox Sports Journo Jay Glazer is ‘Happy to be Alive’

ShutterstockJayGlazerWhen the NFL draft kicks off its three-day Radio City Music Hall run next Thursday, one on-site journalist will feel as blessed as the athletes getting ready to bank seven-figure signing bonuses.

As Fox Sports scoop-meister Jay Glazer recently told USA Today‘s Chris Strauss, everything has changed for him because of a recent bout with aspiration double pneumonia. Glazer was stricken in March following what was supposed to be routine back surgery and is now dealing with a new, daily reality:

“I’m happy to be alive,” Glazer said. “There’s going to be good days and bad days for months. With this thing called aspiration double pneumonia, it’s basically where both your lungs, mine, had gotten burned and infected from ingesting all this stomach acid and bile and stuff that I drowned in.”

This Santa’s Helpers Include Meisner and Stanislavsky

CharlesEdwardHallFrankfort, Kentucky is a lot closer to midtown Manhattan than the North Pole. Which is a good thing because that’s where Charles Edward Hall, the man who has been playing Santa Claus in the Radio City Christmas Spectacular since 1986, makes his home.

AP drama writer Mark Kennedy has fun with the subject matter, starting with a very cute cookies-and-milk lede. He also highlights St. Nick’s impressive thespian training:

Hall is a classically trained actor who cut his teeth doing Shakespeare, Moliere and Ibsen after graduating from Murray State University. One of his more memorable roles was as the Wicked Witch of the West in [previous Radio City Music Hall show] Snow White Live.

Reporter Sits Down with Budding AGT Star Chloe Channell

For those who do not watch America’s Got Talent, this week’s Pensacola News Journal interview by Troy Moon with 11-year-old Florida country singer Chloe Channell was a great primer ahead of her appearance at Radio City Music Hall last night. After auditioning in New Orleans and making it through the second round in Las Vegas, Channell was set to wow the judges once again.

In the video interview with Moon, Channell – alongside her mom – is full of precocious confidence. She proudly points to a mounted “eight pointer” buck shot by her grandmother and raves about the taste of deer jerky. And let’s face it; the name Chloe Channell is one that sounds like it was tailor-made for the country and western world.
