New President at Newsweek/The Daily Beast, New York Adds to Roster

Some moves for you to start your day: Newsweek/The Daily Beast has named Rob Gregory as its President, a new position at the company. Gregory was most recently with Plum TV, and was a veteran with Wenner Media before that. Gregory said of joining the team, “Newsweek and The Daily Beast deliver the ideal combination of immediacy and perspective, with a voice that is razor sharp, smart and fearless.”

New York magazine is also adding to its roster, bringing aboard Jonathan Chait. Chait was most recently a Senior Editor at The New Republic. Chait told Politico, “Obviously I love TNR and had no plans to leave, but the opportunity at New York was irresistible. Everybody who works there raves about it, and my friends in journalism have noticed for a while it’s become phenomenal.”

Newsweek Reduces Losses by Cutting Back Issues

There’s more than one way to try get a magazine to stop hemorrhaging money, and Newsweek is trying all of them. The latest method? Cutting back on the number of issues it publishes.

According to The New York Post, Newsweek is going dark for four weeks this summer:

The original editorial calendar showed only one dark week, surrounding the July 4th weekend. Staffers now have been told that they will not have to work the week of July 18-22 since no issue will appear on July 25. They also can spend a little extra time at the beach the week of Aug. 15-19, since there will now be no issue on Aug. 22.

It’s a good idea, especially when Publisher Ray Chelstowski says that Newsweek seeing ad pages decline by 23 percent is “another indicator that our business is moving in the right direction.”

Hmm… Maybe they should try five weeks?

Newsweek Names Chelstowski as Publisher

Ray Chelstowski, formerly with Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly, has been named Publisher at Newsweek. According to Jeremy Peters at Media Decoder, one of Chelstowski’s first steps will be unifying the sales teams at The Daily Beast and Newsweek, which he insists won’t lead to more chaos:

Right now there are two separate sales staffs, two separate operations. I think the best way to go to market is in an integrated capacity.

Chelstowski told Peters he was optimistic that he and Tina Brown could turn around Newsweek, but then, perhaps realizing that looking on the bright side of things isn’t very in vogue these days, added, “I don’t think that any kind of media proposition is easy today.”

Ray Chelstowski Leaves Entertainment Weekly

This morning Entertainment Weekly publisher Ray Chelstowski informed the magazine that he has stepped down from his post. Chelstowski’s resignation was made known to staffers in an email from president and group publisher Paul Caine. The Hollywood Reporter posted Caine’s brief message on their website:

I am writing with news of a publisher change. Ray Chelstowski has informed me of his decision to leave EW. Over the last two years, Ray and his team have turned EW’s business around, ensuring that today, it is stronger than ever. During this transition, I am counting on all of you and your management team to continue your great success. I will be communicating a plan shortly, and my door is open should you have any thoughts or suggestions. My thanks to Ray for his contributions, and I wish him well in the future.

Chelstowski’s departure comes at a surprising time due to EW’s advertising gains in 2010. According to a minonline report, as of today the title has recorded a +20.71 percent ad-page differential and is on pace to finish their first year in the black since 2003.

Prior to joining EW in May 2009, Chelstowski served as publisher at Rolling Stone and founding publisher of Prestige New York.
