Russell Simmons on Producing (and Starring in) Reality Television

Under his Simmons-Lathan Media Group, Russell Simmons has produced Def Comedy Jam, Def Poetry Jam, The Nutty Professor, and several hit reality shows starring his own family: brother Rev. Run (of Run-DMC) and his family on MTV’s Run’s House and Daddy’s Girls, and Russell himself on Oxygen’s Running Russell Simmons. Meanwhile, ex-wife Kimora Lee Simmons and the couple’s two daughters have their own show on Style, Life in the Fab Lane.

With all of his TV projects, the author and philanthropist says he refuses to “play to cheap seats,” which meant not giving niece Angela the lavish sweet sixteen MTV typically features. And he believes that brand of inspiring reality has placed his own children “in a safer position today as television stars.”

“I tell them that their job as they become more famous is to use their celebrity to help others, use their good benefit if it’s money to benefit others. And that that’s gonna make them happy, and that any hoarding,  holding onto anything will result in sadness and they believe me, I think. So, that’s a constant discussion,” he explained in our @MediaBeat interview.

“But I think that Kimora is such a good mother and such a good disciplinarian –  I know;   I was disciplined for many years, kept in order. So, I know she’s good at that… I was under a good thumb and the kids are under the thumb now. So I know they ain’t doing nothing wrong, ’cause I could NEVER do nothing wrong.”

Pete Wentz, Cheeseheads Hit the Road for ‘MB Tweet Race’

Tomorrow morning, four Mercedes-Benz vehicular teams, each featuring a pair of drivers and “celebrity coach,” will depart for Dallas from LA, Chicago, New York and Tampa. It’s all part of an ingenious Twitter-follow Super Bowl contest put on by the car manufacturer.

The LA team features singer Pete Wentz (@petewentz) and a pair of Green Bay Packer fans, Todd Sanders (@tsand) and John Pederson (@ijohnpederson) (pictured), who actually met through Twitter. At the end of the February 2nd-4th event, which also has a charity component, a follower of the winning team will be randomly selected for a Grand Prize along with 20 others:

Each Twitter race team will select two winners from those participants who have joined their team and the race director (@MbtweetraceHQ) will select twelve additional winners. Winners will be those participants that have tweeted the most plentiful, creative and timely tweets.
