Time Publishes Two Gay Marriage Covers

We love the two new Time covers. It’s two couples kissing. That’s all. Nothing more, nothing less. Interestingly, Rick Stengel, Time’s managing editor, wrote in this week’s issue that the covers were hotly debated topic.

“We had a long debate in our offices about this week’s cover images of two same-sex couples,” wrote Stengel. “Some thought they were sensationalist and too in-your-face. Others felt the images were beautiful and symbolized the love that is at the heart of the idea of marriage. I agree with the latter, and I hope you do too.”

What, exactly, is “sensationalist” about two people kissing? How could this be seen as “too in-your-face?” The photographs are only provocative if you have a problem with happiness.

Bobby Ghosh Named Time International Editor

Bobby Ghosh has been named the new editor of Time International. Ghosh has been with Time since 1998. He was most recently deputy editor of Time International. In 2007, Ghosh was named a senior editor of Time Europe. He has also been Time’s Baghdad bureau chief.

“He is entrepreneurial by nature and has many ideas on how to grow the Time brand,” wrote Rick Stengel, Time’s managing editor, in a memo. “And, finally, this appointment has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he saved me from getting tear-gassed in Tahrir Square last year. Congratulations to Bobby on his new role. He will be great.”

Ghosh is succeeding Jim Frederick, who is moving on from Time to pursue other interests. He will remain a contributing editor to Time.

Time Inc. Staffers Confident in New Company That Has $500 Million in Debt

Now that Time Inc. staffers no longer have to worry about moving to Iowa to join Meredith, some are breathing a sigh of relief. The New York Times reports that several employees expressed confidence in the new, independent Time Inc. despite the fact that it will start off with between $500 million and $1 billion in debt. Now that’s optimism.

Rick Stengel, Time’s managing editor, was particularly upbeat. He told the Times the spinoff from Time Warner was exciting. “It’s sort of put up or shut up time,” he said. “I think great, let’s really test that hypothesis that people will pay for great content and great journalism. We can now invest our own capital.”

Other anonymous Time Inc. staffers expressed the same sentiments. One mentioned that a lot of people blamed Jeff Bewkes, CEO of Time Warner, for Time Inc. faltering. “There was a real sense that Jeff didn’t have either interest in Time Inc. and magazine publishing and didn’t have faith in it as a business going forward,” a former, anonymous Time Inc. exec, told the Times. “His focus was always the film and TV side of the company.”

We imagine the next few years are going to be rough for Time Inc., but in order to keep looking on the bright side, we think everything will work out.

Time Celebrates 90 Years

Time turns 90 this week. To celebrate, the magazine has a slew of offerings, including a slideshow/history lesson as taught by Time, an interactive cover feature (tweet your favorite and it’ll show up here) and some birthday advice from Joel Stein.

“For me, 90 is not so much a milestone but evidence that for nine decades Time is always new, always of the moment,” Rick Stengel, managing editor of Time, writes in this week’s issue. “We have to be because we cover the way the world is changing and that never stops.”

TIME hosted its annual Person of the Year panel today, where a seemingly random assortment of notable people give their opinions on who should get the honor. Moderated by managing editor Rick Stengel, panelists included:

Bryan Cranston – best known for his chemical concoctions on Breaking Bad, star of Argo.

Newt Gingrich – The only panelist who actually held the honor of “Person of the Year,” as speaker of the house back in 1995. Dubious about climate change.

Matt Lauer – host of the Today show, not dubious about climate change.

Padma Lakshmi – Host of Top Chef, woman.

Michael Nutter – Mayor of Philadelphia.

Time Adds Editor-at-Large

Time has named Harry McCracken an Editor-at-Large. McCracken, the founder of the tech site Technologizer, has written for Time and Time.com in the past, and as part of his new role, will contribute more frequently to both.

In a memo, Rick Stengel, Time’s Managing Editor, said the more McCracken, the better.

“His expertise is matched only by his versatility: he writes long, writes short, knows the inventors and the consumers, offers the expert product review and then the high altitude perspective on the forces that are changing the industry and the culture,” said Stengel. “He writes in a clear, conversational style that is appreciated by both techies and Luddites.”

New Assistant Managing Editor at Time

Time magazine managing editor Rick Stengel just announced the addition of Tom Weber as an assistant managing editor. He will be responsible for features, both in print and online, as well as helping to shape the magazine’s digital strategy.

Weber has served as editor of SmartMoney.com, and managing editor at Newsweek/Daily Beast.

Stengel wrote in a staff announcement:

An elegant story teller and incisive editor, Tom has honed his skill working with young writers as a Ferris Professor of Journalism at Princeton, where he serves as a trustee of The Daily Princetonian. Time Names New Europe Editor

Time has promoted Catherine Mayer to the role of Europe Editor. Mayer joined Time in 2004 and has been the magazine’s London Bureau Chief since 2006.

Mayer now joins the ranks of Jim Frederick, Time International’s Editor and Zoher Abdoolcarim, the magazine’s Asia Editor.

“She [Mayer] will help Time expand, deepen and enrich our international coverage on all platforms and work closely with our business side to seek out new opportunities for growth,” wrote Rick Stengel in an internal memo. He added that she will continue to pen British culture pieces and profiles “as often as her new duties will allow.”

Time.com Names Managing Editor

Catherine Sharick has been promoted from Executive Director of Time.com to Managing Editor. Sharick has been with Time since 2002, when she joined the company as a Web Producer. Prior to Time, Sharick worked at Random House and Simon & Schuster.

John Huey said of Sharick, “Working closely with the last couple of managing editors of the site, Cathy has been a big part of Time.com’s dramatic success so far, and she will be an even more important contributor to its future success.”

“It is an understatement to say that she has earned this job,” said Rick Stengel in an internal memo announcing the promotion. “She leads by example, by her deep knowledge and understanding and an abiding sense of fairness. She is devoted to Time, to what we stand for, and to the highest standards of excellence.”

Time Rushes Commemorative Issue to Newsstands as Tribute to Steve Jobs

Less than 48 hours after Apple co-founder Steve Jobs died, Time magazine is rushing to the presses with a special commemorative issue paying tribute to the visionary.

The special issue, hitting newsstands and tablets tomorrow, features Jobs on its cover and 21 pages dedicated to the man behind the iPhone, iPad, and iPod.

Time‘s special edition includes a six-page essay by Jobs’ biographer Walter Isaacson, a historical report on Jobs iconic career by Time technology reporters Harry McCracken and Lev Grossman, and a photo essay by Diana Walker, who has been shooting Jobs for Time since 1982.

“This is Steve’s seventh Time cover, which puts him in the category of Presidents and other world leaders,” Time editor Rick Stengel says. “No one has tracked Steve’s life better than the man who used to have my job, Walter Isaacson. Walter writes that Steve was the modern creation myth writ large and that he revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing and digital publishing.”

The magazine is increasing its print run for this special issue, which will be available worldwide.

Time Names New Editor of Time International

Time magazine has named Jim Frederick as the new Editor of Time International. Frederick was most recently Managing Editor of Time’s website. Via an internal memo, Rick Stengel said Frederick will fit perfectly in the new role.

“Jim knows our European and Asian editions from firsthand experience… His passion for excellence, his gift for collaboration, his ability to see around corners and plan for the long term while remaining nimble in the face of breaking news, have all served Time digital well and will be essential as he helps lead Time International to new growth and strength,” said Stengel.

Time Gets New Deputy Managing Editor

Time Inc. has named Nancy Gibbs as Time’s new Deputy Managing Editor, which makes her the lead person to eventually succeed Rick Stengel. Stengel told The New York Post “I’m not going anywhere soon,” but added that he’d be reevaluating his path after the election.

Stengel said in an internal memo that Gibbs had definitely showed that she could handle the position. “Well, when it comes to Nancy, you already know the historic stuff: most covers written – among them four presidential election nights, Columbine, Katrina, the great original 9/11 cover (and a wonderful essay in this 9/11 + 10 issue) — a record that will never be broken,” said Stengel. “But what you don’t know is how Nancy has applied some of those same cover-writing skills to her work as a manager: she has brought great creativity to dealing with the business side, she has excelled at planning stories and covers many months in advance, and she has been a perfect mentor to writers and editors.”

Radhika Jones is Named an Executive Editor at TIME

Radhika Jones has been promoted to executive editor at TIME magazine. Jones, who has been with the pub three years today, has edited the last two TIME 100 issues and the Mark Zuckerberg “Person of the Year” issue.

Jones joined TIME from Paris Review where she was managing editor. She began her journalism career at the Moscow Times, where she started as a copy editor.

Jones joins TIME’s two other Executive Editors, Nancy Gibbs and Jim Frederick, who is also the Managing Editor of TIME.com.

Time Magazine’s Rick Stengel and Robert Redford on Parallels Between the Civil War and Post-9/11 America

For the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Time magazine’s cover story is devoted to history’s tendency to frame the Civil War in terms of conflicts over states’ rights rather than address the hideous legacy of slavery and its continuous effects in American society to this very day.

Legendary director Robert Redford likewise recently released a film, “The Conspirator,” on the assassination of Lincoln and the fallout after the Civil War that examines the strange way that war changes laws and history morphs the truth.

Redford’s film tells the little-known story of Mary Surratt, the only female charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination of Lincoln, and the Johnson administration’s suspension of the Constitution when trying Surratt by military commission instead of in a civil trial.

Following a Thursday screening of Redford’s film, Time Managing Editor Rick Stengel asked Robert Redford about the deep parallels between his film and the recent decision to try the alleged 9/11 masterminds by military commission rather than in a civilian federal court in New York.

Jessica Winter is Time Magazine’s New Arts Editor

Time magazine’s managing editor Rick Stengel announced today that Jessica Winter has been hired as Time‘s new arts editor, both for the pages in the magazine’s Culture section as well as for arts coverage on Time.com.

Winter worked previously with O: The Oprah Magazine, where she ran the front of book for three years, and prior to that she was an editor at The Village Voice.
