The Journalism Shop of Former LAT Staffers Launches

jshop logo temp2 08.02.09.jpg
The Journalism Shop launched yesterday. They describe themselves on the site:

Over the past couple of years the Los Angeles Times and its corporate owner, Tribune, have undergone an epic financial crunch which has led to the jettisoning of hundreds of veteran journalists. We are some of them. Our ranks include veteran political journalists, fashion writers, award-winning investigative journalists and a wide raft of the invisible folks of newspapers – line editors, copy editors, page designers and researchers.

We talked to former LA Times staffer Brett Levy (also see: WriteThru.com) who runs the site. He told us that within the past 36 hours of their soft launch one of the members of the site is “in talks” about work.

The site has no ads, it just showcases the resumes of journos who have left or been left by the LAT. “It’s more like a co-op or a club at this point,” says Levy.

Currently there are roughly 24 members listed on the site, including Scott Martelle, Nona Yates, Nancy Wride, Kristina Lindgren, Janet Wilson, Greg Johnson, Lynne Heffley, Lynn Smith, Rick Schmitt, Jim Fowler, Susannah Rosenblatt, Elizabeth Douglass, Robin Rauzi, Saul Daniels, Richard Cromelin, Robyn Norwood, Rosemary McClure, Karen Chaderjian, Craig Matsuda and Susan Brink.

Is this the solution to the woes of the laid off? Well, when the going gets tough – the tough go freelance.

We have our fingers crossed for all of them.

FBLA Trolls WeHo – Finds Ho’ People

This is another photo of the Patrick Range McDonald shindig.

From the left is Matthew Poe who’s at UCLA Live and said he’s looking forward to working with former LAT editor turned flack Robin Rauzi.

In the middle is Michael O. Gallant producer of the current film Humboldt County. And to the right is actor Vincent De Paul, who’s had a small roll in just about everything – including Humboldt County. And uhm, this picture doesn’t really do him justice. He’s smoking.

You know, if you’re into actors…which we are not…not really anyway.

Editor Robin Rauzi Out at LAT

Tourism_rauzi_submitted.jpgBad news is Op/Ed editor Robin Rauzi is leaving the LA Times. Good news is she didn’t get laid off…she quit.

Good news.

Rauzi sends us this email:

Please pardon the impersonal nature of this, but I’m leaving the Los Angeles Times early next week, and time is running short to let everyone know. I’ve had a great time here — nearly 14 years with one off for good behavior — in Calendar, Travel and OpEd, in no small part because of the wonderful people I got to work with.

On Jan. 12 I’ll start my new job as senior publicist for UCLA Live, the performing arts series. Yes, yes… the journalists among you will say, “Rauzi? A flack?” And I will reply, “That’s senior flack to you.”

If you don’t know much about UCLA Live, I encourage you to check it out at www.uclalive.org. If you’re in Los Angeles, I further encourage you to come see a show. Look for me at the press table.

Tribune Company Gets Approval to Pay “Vendors”

Okay, for all those that were wondering when/if that big fat freelance LAT paycheck was coming – worry no more. It seems the first order of business today in bankruptcy court was to approve the motion that enables payment of payroll.

So the ‘payment freeze‘ was about 48 hours long.

The entire press release from the Tribune Co. is here.

LAT Op/ed editor Robin Rauzi told FBLA “We are still taking submissions on the oped page.”

Finally, good news.
