Roger Ebert Dies at 70

Roger Ebert — a legend — has died. He was 70 years old. Just yesterday, Ebert announced that his cancer had returned and that in order to deal with radiation treatments, he was going to dial down his production. But minutes ago, the Chicago Sun-Times tweeted “It is with a heavy heart we report that legendary film critic Roger Ebert (<s>@</s>ebertchicago) has passed away.”

Ebert had been a contributor to the Sun-Times since 1967. He wrote 15 books and in 1975, became the first film critic to win a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. Ebert’s TV shows, such as At the Movies with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert and Siskel and Ebert and The Movies, received many Emmy nominations. And the famous “thumbs” rating system etched a place in American culture that will never fade away.

“I believe that if, at the end of it all, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do,” wrote Ebert, in his memoir, Life Itself. “To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try.”

Mission accomplished, Mr. Ebert.

Roger Ebert’s Cancer Returns

Sad news to start the day: Roger Ebert says that his cancer has returned, and that he’s going to take what he calls a “leave of presence” while undergoing radiation treatments.

“My intent is to continue to write selected reviews but to leave the rest to a talented team of writers handpicked and greatly admired by me,” wrote the Pulitzer winner. “What’s more, I’ll be able at last to do what I’ve always fantasized about doing: reviewing only the movies I want to review.”

Ebert, who previously battled with cancer in his thyroid and pituitary glands, said that he will take this moment to write more about his illness.

“At this point in my life, in addition to writing about movies, I may write about what it’s like to cope with health challenges and the limitations they can force upon you. It really stinks that the cancer has returned and that I have spent too many days in the hospital. So on bad days I may write about the vulnerability that accompanies illness. On good days, I may wax ecstatic about a movie so good it transports me beyond illness.”

Ebert is an icon in the media and film industry, so needless to say, we’re sending positive thoughts his way.

Roger Ebert Finally Wins New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest

Our feel-good story of the day!

Two years ago, Roger Ebert wrote this on his Chicago Sun Times blog:

I have entered the New Yorker’s cartoon caption contest almost weekly virtually since it began and have never even been a finalist. Mark Twain advised: “Write without pay until somebody offers to pay you. If nobody offers within three years, sawing wood is what you were intended for.” I have done more writing for free for the New Yorker in the last five years than for anybody in the previous 40 years.

It’s not that I think my cartoon captions are better than anyone else’s, although some weeks, understandably, I do. It’s that just once I want to see one of my damn captions in the magazine that publishes the best cartoons in the world. Is that too much to ask?

Finally, today, the New Yorker announced that Ebert’s caption has been picked! Behold:

Congratulations! And he’s not done yet — we hear he has already submitted a new caption.

The Best in Media Writing

The blizzard continues to snarl travel plans, leaving a ton of people bored out of their minds in airports across the nation. It’s times like this when having something good to read (or plenty of alcohol) comes in handy, and Joe Pompeo over at The Cutline has put together a great list of long-form media writing to help.

Number one on the list, which we agree with, is the Roger Ebert profile by Chris Jones in Febuary’s Esquire. It’s an amazing piece that offers a look into the life of Ebert, who hasn’t been able to speak since his thyroid cancer surgery in 2006.

Other articles featured in Pompeo’s list include a Nick Denton article by Ben McGrath in The New Yorker and a Glenn Beck feature by Mark Leibovich in the New York Times Magazine. Give some of these articles a try if you’re looking for something to take your mind off of the holiday travel madness.

Roger Ebert Writes Out

After Roger Ebert recent profile in Esquire magazine, which detailed his many surgeries to fight cancer and has left him unable to eat, drink, or speak, the Chicago Sun-Times columnist and perhaps one of the two most iconic movie critics in the world (the other being his late partner, Gene Siskel) the narrative on the street seemed to be “This is Ebert’s last interview.” Instead, the outspoken writer took to his column today to say that even though several blogs and other outlets have picked up on the “final words” narrative (so to speak), that we’re “all dying in increments” (as Poynter likened its column). Even though he was shocked by the picture of himself used in the Esquire column, with part of his lower jaw missing as he stares mischievously into the camera, he says, “If we think we have physical imperfections, obsessing about them is only destructive.”
