The fellowships, established in 1999, offer mid-career journalists looking to expand their coverage of violence and traumatic events a chance to learn from experts in the field. The ten fellowships awarded this year went to journalists from all types of media outlets from around the world who had previously covered horrible events including crimes, natural disasters, diseases and wars.

Among the recipients is Amy Dockser Marcus, a Pulitzer Prize winning Wall Street Journal reporter who spent most of the 90′s working as the financial paper’s Middle East correspondent based in Israel. She received her Pulitzer for a series she wrote about the many challenges — physical, emotional and monetary — that cancer survivors face. Her work focuses on rare and overlooked diseases and patient advocacy.

Other fellowship recipients included three freelance journalists, Maryn McKenna, Jina Moore and Philip Zabriskie, who have written for a number of publications covering domestic and global health care policies and post-conflict situations, respectively.

Other recipients include The Washington Post‘s Kari Lydersen; John McCusker of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, Peter Cave of the Australian Broadcasting Corp.; U.K. broadcaster Ronke Phillips of ITV; Brazilian journalist Solange Azevedo of Revista Epoca in Sao Paulo and Huáscar Robles Carrasquillo from the Metro San-Juan in Puerto Rico.
