Fox Execs Move to Fix Good Day New York

The honeymoon for Dave Price appears to be over at Channel 5. A person with knowledge of the situation tells FishbowlNY that Sharri Berg, the SVP of the Fox Television Stations Group, visited WNYW recently to talk about Good Day New York.

The source says, Berg was joined by a consultant to help fix the morning broadcast. Price took over the Good Day co-hosting in early July with Rosanna Scotto, after Greg Kelly was promoted to night side. Ernie Anastos lost the high-profile 10 p.m. newscast.

Price, a one-time Good Day weather anchor, has felt the brunt of the criticism since his WNYW return.

Last week, our poll found a whopping 50-point margin of respondents wanted Price ousted in favor of Kelly.

Beyond that, Fox is scrambling to put out the fire, as the Scotto/Price chemistry has been sorely lacking. That, in turn, has already translated into ratings for rival WPIX, either winning key demos, or coming close, in the typically quiet July sweeps period.

This is not the first time since the July changes that Fox executives met with WNYW management. We reported two weeks after the anchor swap that meetings were held for Kelly “damage control.”

FishbowlNY Poll: Readers Again Make Case for Dave Price’s Exodus From Good Day New York

FishbowlNY readers and WNYW viewers have decided for the second time this month that Dave Price should be dropped from Good Day New York. And it should be emphasized, those same readers don’t just want him replaced by anyone, they want Greg Kelly back in mornings alongside Rosanna Scotto.

In our latest poll that started two weeks ago, we asked for an opinion of Price’s performance on Good Day.

Mitt Romney or President Obama would be thrilled being on the receiving end of staggering results like this.

Price is certainly no Howard Cosell, but if our (unscientific) poll is any indication, viewers either love him or hate him.

With a 50 percent landslide, 63 percent of our voters choose,”Bring back Greg!” Delving deeper, we find even more of an “anti-Price” wave. Another 12 percent “pulled the lever” for our poll choice, “Bad choice by Channel 5, he shouldn’t be a morning news anchor!” That means 3/4 of the poll takers want Price out, with or without Kelly returning to the seat.

Dave Price Turns Dancing With The Stars Interview into Awkward Good Day New York Segment

Good Day New York is busy wiping egg from its face following an unfortunately memorable segment.

One of Dancing With The Stars “professionals” was interviewed on WNYW’s Good Day New York yesterday morning. It started out decent enough with Maks Chmerkovskiy, who discussed his second stint with Kirstie Alley for the All-Stars version of the popular ABC show this fall.

It didn’t take long, however, for the interview to stray into the uncomfortable.

Meteorologist Audrey Puente (in for Mike Woods), a huge fan of the show and Chmerkovskiy, was invited to sit with co-anchors Dave Price and Rosanna Scotto as they spoke to the Dancing star.

Audrey, whose dad was the iconic Salsa performer Tito Puente, asked what was his favorite genre of music.

Price, then turned the proceedings downright awkward, “Audrey wanted to ask a question, have you ever made love to a weather woman before?” (See video clip after the jump)

FishbowlNY Poll: Readers Emphatically Want Greg Kelly Back on Good Day New York

Kelly at 10 p.m. with back-up anchor Sharon Crowley

The ballots are in, although the voting never officially ended. And it’s bad news for Greg Kelly, but worse news for WNYW.

Our FishbowlNY poll posted two weeks ago allowed readers and viewers to tell it to us straight–What do you think of Kelly as an evening anchor?

Presumably you know that Kelly started in July as Channel 5′s lead anchor. It was the final piece of a major swarm of activity that included Dave Price returning to WNYW as Good Day New York anchor, and Ernie Anastos being bounced from the 10 p.m. (He remains on the 5 p.m. with Dari Alexander).

By a nearly 2 to 1 margin, our respondents want Kelly back where he “belongs”: mornings. A whopping 45 percent of poll takers want the Kelly and Rosanna Scotto as a team again on Good Day. This month would have been their fourth anniversary as on-air “husband and wife.”

But those who responded to the poll were split on “Kelly After Dark,” as 24 percent chose, “He’s Great!” Another 20 percent clicked on the “Bring Back Ernie!” option. We’re not certain, though, how many of the 45 percent wanting Kelly switched to his original “home base” would in fact like Anastos to reclaim is previous 10 p.m. duties.

Now it’s time to take our poll about Dave Price, after the jump.

WNYW Keeps its Distance at 10 P.M., as Greg Kelly Marks One-Month

Today is the one-month milestone for Greg Kelly as WNYW/Channel 5 lead anchor. To paraphrase, former Mayor Koch, “How’s he doing?” You’ll get a chance to vote after the jump.

But a slightly more scientific “poll,” the Nielsen ratings for July, show WNYW in front at night. In the Household breakdown, Channel 5 averaged a 2.4 to WPIX/Channel 11′s 1.6. While WPIX saw no gain, the 2012 July sweeps marked a .3 drop for WNYW from last year.

Among the key Adults 25 to 54 demographic, WNYW saw no improvement at 10 p.m. with Kelly and Dari Alexander, although WPIX slipped .1. Of course, WNYW has the established Fox prime time lead-in, even in the summer. Channel 11 has the weaker CW lineup.

Last week, we reported WPIX edged WNYW in the morning race.

A ‘Hairy’ Situation at Good Day New York

Good Day New York co-anchor Dave Price is marking is one-month on the job tomorrow in style. Unfortunately for WNYW news director Dianne Doctor, it’s not about the hair style.

On yesterday’s broadcast, Price shared an email from his boss, wanting him to “fix his hair.”

Rosanna Scotto asked how he responded, to which the former Good Day weatherman didn’t hold back.

“I can’t tell you how I responded. I mean, fix my hair? Would you stop already with the fix my hair? Here’s the deal,” Price said. ”This is the hair I was born with, this is the hair I’ve had on television for the past 15 years. And this woman is obsessed with my hair … Do I walk into her office and tell her to fix her hair? No. I’d be suspended.”

Scotto, clearly trying to shift the conversion to a more amenable topic, said, “OK. Let’s move along, shall we?”

In the first month since Greg Kelly was promoted to nights, morning powerhouse Good Day has lost its dominance. The July sweeps released last week ahead of the Olympics showed WPIX caught WNYW in the pivotal Adults 25 to 54.

Our sister site, TVSpy has more on today’s WNYW story.

WPIX Catches WNYW in July Morning Race

Let the good times roll at WPIX!

Thanks to a combination of its hard work and a competitor’s questionable moves, WPIX staked a claim of the July Nielsen ratings.

Channel 11 is a winner in the morning. In particular, the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m portion of the PIX Morning News with Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera. The program has eclipsed morning powerhouse WNYW and its Good Day New York. In the all-important Adults 25 to 54, WPIX edged WPIX, .8 to .7.

“We feel great about that because we haven’t done that in the morning,” WPIX news director Bill Carey says.

It’s the least publicized “Sweeps” period, because of the much-reduced summertime viewership.

Regardless, it’s a “two-fold” victory for Channel 11. The Tribune station in the same demo last July managed only a .4 during the two-hour block.

(VIDEO) Dari Alexander’s iPhone Goes Off During 10 O’Clock News

It was a night for recapping the horrific events from Aurora, Colorado. Greg Kelly was co-anchoring his first 10 p.m. newscast with extensive breaking news.

The unfortunate story that captivated New Yorkers involved the alleged gunmen who fired at least 70 times at the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises. WNYW/Channel 5 opened the broadcast with a live shot from the Denver surburb, although it featured a typo on the screen for the location: “Colorodo.”

Kelly did drop the ad-libbing quality during the coverage, a mainstay of the NYPD commissioner’s son. But unlike his counterparts at other stations, Kelly laid the emotion on too thick, seeming insincere.

However, it was his on-air partner who fell victim to an embarrassing moment. At 10:47, as the newscast returned from a commercial break, Dari Alexander was flustered by her iPhone starting to play music or a musical ringtone.

Adding to the unprofessionalism, Alexander, it appears, was in the midst of a conversation with Kelly when the red light went on. (See video below)

Breaking: WNYW Brass Meet for Greg Kelly Damage Control

It’s just over two weeks since WNYW/Channel 5 made wholesale changes to its on-air product. Front and center was the promotion of Greg Kelly from Good Day New York to evening anchor. His move to 10 p.m. with Dari Alexander sent market icon Ernie Anastos to the sidelines. He remains on the 5 p.m. broadcast.

Multiple sources close to the situation say three high-ranking Fox executives met yesterday with WNYW VP/GM Lew Leone for “damage control.”

FishbowlNY has learned that Jack Abernathy, Dennis Swanson, and Sharri Berg met with Leone, although news director Dianne Doctor was a no-show.

One source says the trio came to 67th Street to “figure out how to handle Greg in the 10 o’clock news.”

With Kelly at night, Dave Price stepped into Good Day with Rosanna Scotto. FishbowlNY readers have given mixed reviews, to be kind, about Price’s performance and his chemistry with Scotto.

Our readers also offered strong opinions about Kelly’s transformation to night time. Most prefer Kelly on mornings, where he spent four years, bouncing off Scotto. One reason is because Kelly brings much of his daytime style to the more subdued evening broadcast.

WPIX Takes a Victory Lap in Morning; Beats WNYW, Edges Today

WPIX is flexing its muscle in morning. The Nielsen overnight ratings for yesterday’s show is some great news for Channel 11. The PIX Morning News claims a huge victory in the advertiser-friendly Adults 25 to 54 demographic.

Not only did WPIX defeat its main competition in the 7 a.m. hour, WNYW with Good Day New York, the broadcast anchored by Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera, eclipsed NBC’s Today show.

PIX averaged an impressive 1.5 with a share just under 10. Today with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie fell just short of WPIX’s performance with a 1.4 and a 9.2 share of the audience. Ratings for WLNY’s new morning venture, The Couch, are not tabulated at this time.

Earlier this month, Dave Price teamed with Rosanna Scotto at WNYW.  WPIX made its own pre-dawn splash, giving Lionel a large role during the 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. news block.
