Morning Media Menu With CBS’s Russ Mitchell

mornmm.gifToday on the Menu we are joined, straight off the set, by CBS’s Russ Mitchell who is the news anchor for both The Early Show and CBS’s Sunday Evening News. Mitchell, who by the way is running second in his NCAA bracket behind Julie Chen (apparently going with Syracuse was not our best choice!), talks about the changing face of news and what people entering the business should consider.mitchell_3-31b.jpg

“The traditional model of doing things is long gone, so what I tell them is to have a thick skin, know they’re going to get knocked down many times, and to also have as many skills as possible under their belt.”

Mitchell also talks about the Missouri Honor Medal for Distinguished Service in Journalism he is about to receive from his alma mater, the University of Missouri, as well as the future of online video. Morning Media Menu with NYT‘s Brian Stelter

mornmm.gifToday on the Menu, after overcoming some technical difficulties that Steve assures us is not the fault of New Jersey (where he is broadcasting from) we talk with the NYT‘s Brian Stelter about his A-1 story on Glenn Beck. Beck has seen viewer numbers sky-rocket for his 5pm slot at Fox News since moving there from HLN in January. Brian notes that Beck now ranks number three in all cable hosts, and says that considering the numbers have stayed steady through March it appears he may be more than a flash in the pan.

We also talk about cable networks attempting to charge for online content and why I think that is a terrible, backwards idea. And before Steve bolts for his train back into the city we touch upon HuffPo’s new investigative journalism venture. You can listen to all the past podcasts at BlogTalkRadio.com/mediabistro and call in at 646-929-0321. On tomorrow’s podcast: CBS’ Russ Mitchell.
