Hollywood Stuntwoman Recalls Trial Balloon Work with Hal Needham

The group of authors who repeatedly defied death in order to make it to a booth at the 2013 LA Times Festival of Books is very small. FishbowlLA was lucky enough to spend some time Sunday chatting with one of them.

Julie Ann Johnson was at the event with her co-author, three-time Pulitzer nominee David L. Robb, to promote their recent release The Stuntwoman: The True Story of a Hollywood Heroine. Though the bulk of the book is about how she was blackballed from the industry for blowing the whistle on unsavory working conditions on the set of Aaron Spelling‘s TV series Charlie’s Angels, we asked her about her experiences with the legendary Hal Needham, author of a similar 2011 tome and the recipient of a recent honorary Academy Award.

Johnson talked to us about the stunt she and Needham did for the 1976 movie Nickelodeon, starring Burt Reynolds and Ryan O’Neal. It is one of several collaborations with Needham she covers in Chapter 18 (“A Piece of Cake”). The scene required Needham to dangle Johnson, doubling respectively for Reynolds and Jane Hitchcock, high up in the air from a hot air balloon:

It was a great scene; the studio even used it in the poster for the film. But it almost got Julie and Hal killed – again…

Ryan O’Neal Makes Wild Accusation on Piers Morgan Tonight

Is this the mother of all reality TV show PR stunts?

Tonight, a day after Ryan & Tatum: The O’Neals debuted on OWN, actor Ryan O’Neal will share on Piers Morgan Tonight one of the most callous bits of conjecture ever uttered by a celebrity. He thinks it’s “highly possible” that the turmoil between he and his daughter led to the cancer that claimed Farrah Fawcett:

Oprah Scoops Hollywood – Again

Later today, Atlanta-based mogul Tyler Perry will share what he describes as the most “in-depth and revelatory interview” he has ever done, providing details of early childhood sexual abuse at the hands of several men and one woman. But the setting for this tearful conversation is not the pages of Vanity Fair, the light bulb map backdrop of Larry King Live or the punchy paragraph scroll of TMZ.com.

Rather, it is today’s episode of Oprah, where host Oprah Winfrey, in her 25th and final season, continues to lead the way with substantive film and TV industry related coverage. Even a recent episode with Love Story co-stars Ali McGraw and Ryan O’Neal, their first on-camera reunion in 20 years, was more revelatory and satisfying than most of what passes for west coast breaking entertainment news. Especially intriguing were repeat examinations by the pair of the seminal 1970 movie’s signature line, ‘Love means never having to say you’re sorry.’ O’Neal, a regular target of the tabloids, also spoke movingly about his relationship with the late Farrah Fawcett.

Barbara Walters Special Tonight Will Focus On Farrah

farrah.jpg Sad news from Hollywood: Earlier today, former Charlies Angel Farrah Fawcett lost her battle with cancer.

Our colleagues at TVNewser are reporting that a special edition of “20/20″ — called “Farrah’s Journey” — will air tonight on ABC at 10pmET, hosted by Barbara Walters in honor of Farrah.

Farrah’s longtime partner, Ryan O’Neal, has already put out a statement about her death:

“She’s gone. She now belongs to the ages…She’s now with her mother and sister and her God. I loved her with all my heart. I will miss her so very, very much. She was in and out of consciousness. I talked to her all through the night. I told her how very much I loved her. She’s in a better place now.”

UPDATE: Famous Crackheads in the Pokey Again

ryan_ossneal.jpg

Yesterday Andrew Blankstein reported that Aaron Spelling‘s brother and Ryan O’Neal were arrested on drug charges, but we got a little update (which we read, um, 17 hours too late) about the case:

LAPD now says they can’t say for sure if it’s Aaron Spelling’s brother or nephew. Candy Spelling‘s publicist is saying it’s the nephew.

The LAT changed the story online. For those of you keeping score.

Famous Crackheads in the Pokey Again

ryan_oneal.jpgAndrew Blankstein has two pieces in the LAT today. One is about Ryan O’Neal and his son being arrested for suspicion of meth. The other one is about Aaron Spelling‘s brother, Daniel Spelling Jr. being arrested on an outstanding felony warrant due to his possession of cocaine.

Do you see a pattern here? We did. So we caught up with Blankstein and asked:

FBLA: Ever worry that you are becoming the Dr Drew of the LAT? The drunken celebrity disaster magnet?

AB: Let’s just say, if this was college, I would be majoring in criminal justice and minoring in celebrity justice.

We say in this town – that’s still major. Thanks Blankstein!
