Playoff Football Outscores Rockin’ Eve for Ratings Supremacy

The first rating survey of 2013 continues to highlight the popularity of the NFL. No Jets or Giants in the playoffs, but the Wild Card action still won the week. Fox had the top spot for its playoff match Sunday evening between Seattle and Washington. The game had an estimated 2.1 million WNYW viewers and an 11 rating, according to Nielsen. The Fox playoff post-game show settled for number six (1.1 million/5.7).

NBC’s Wild Card nightcap, the Week 17 rematch between Green Bay and Minnesota, took second place with 1.4 million viewers and a 7.3 rating. NBC’s studio portion bridging the playoff double header tied for fourth (1.3 million/6.8).

Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve ’13 with Ryan Seacrest had a strong showing at number three. Seacrest’s first year as complete host of the holiday tradition netted 1.3 million WABC viewers and a 7.0.

A special two-hour retrospective of Clark was 11th for the week (833,000/4.2).

There’s more from the Top 10 after the jump.

Marking New Year’s Eve at Times Square Without Dick Clark

The world is poised to celebrate another New Year’s Eve in Times Square. But this one will be unlike any in the last forty years, as there will be no Dick Clark preceding over the all-important ball drop.

Clark died in April at the age of 82. He suffered a massive heart attack, and was dealing with the complications from a stroke since 2004.

For the majority of his decades in the business, Clark’s boyish looks kept his title “Oldest Living Teenager” intact. He was synonymous with New Year’s Eve since creating his Rockin’ Eve special to usher in 1973. He marked his 40th anniversary with the holiday program just months before his death.

The show must go on, as New Year’s Eve goes on without Clark, and his beloved show continues his legacy and to bear his name.

In recent years, tourists or anyone else venturing to the Times Square Visitors Center, or online, were asked to write notes to help ring in the New Year that would be used as confetti.

This year, people are encouraged to leave fond farewells to Clark.

Tim Tompkins, Times Square Alliance president, says approximately 400 messages were left for the broadcasting icon. Those hand-written notes came from people from as far as away as Fiji and Yemen. Overall, they receive thousands of well-wishers year-round on various topics.

Tompkins tells FishbowlNY that Clark played a major psychological role when New York needed it most.

“For many decades, this was one of the few positive images that went out to the rest of the country of New York City and Times Square, Tompkins says. “This is the time you had Midnight Cowboy, you had Taxi Driver.” continued…

Iconic TV Host, Producer Dick Clark Dies at 82

Dick Clark presiding over his final New Year's Eve (Dec. 31, 2011)

Dick Clark, who launched American Bandstand, and decades later gave millions a New Year’s Eve alternative, died today of a massive heart attack in California at age 82. The man long considered an influential figure in the world of broadcasting and rock music, was nicknamed “America’s Oldest Teenager” for his perpetual and youthful, good looks.

Clark suffered a stroke in 2004 causing partial paralysis. His speech was also affected as noticed each year since in his New Year’s Rockin’ Eve broadcast from Times Square. In 2005, he was joined by American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, who did the heavy lifting.

Clark was a standout talent behind the camera as well. He was the chairman and chief executive of the production company that bears his name.

“He was the absolute best,” Norm N. Nite, former WCBS-FM air personality, tells FishbowlNY. “Nobody did it better than Dick Clark. What can you say about a guy you know for 40 years?”

Remembering Soul Train Creator Don Cornelius

He was a pioneering TV host and producer, but knowing Don Cornelius as the man of Soul Train only scratches the surface. Cornelius was found dead this morning at his Los Angeles home. The coroner’s office says it appears to be a suicide. Cornelius was 75.

He created Soul Train in 1970 at WCIU in Chicago. A year later, Americans jumped on board the train for a 35-year ride.

“Mr. Cornelius capitalized on an opportunity to serve a market that wasn’t being served,” WBLS program director Skip Dillard tells FishbowlNY. “While Soul Train focused on showcasing new African American artists and bands, a much larger audience than African Americans tuned in.”

Bob Slade, an African American fixture in New York for four decades at KISS FM, and black music historian, recalls interviewing Cornelius many years ago.

“He told me his dream was to be a disc jockey,” Slade remembers.

Cathie Black Resurfaces, Jann Wenner at Table One, and Dish from The Millionaire Matchmaker

Despite the worst case of Gotham gridlock in months (Thanks, Mr. President), there were plenty of media heavy hitters (Jann Wenner, John Huey), high-profile editors (Martha Nelson, Kate White) and a spin sister (Peggy Siegal) at Michael’s today. While the power lunch set was chewing over their next big deal between bites, I had a dishy lunch with Bravo’s Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger and my good friend, the network’s SVP of communications, Jennifer Geisser. If you’ve seen any part of Matchmaker, you know that Patti tells it like she sees it no matter what. “I’m a truth-teller; that’s it,” she told me after sharing some particularly searing commentary on some boldface names we all know. Sorry, but it’s off the record.

Fortunately, Patti did let loose over lunch and share her thoughts on her ‘overnight success’ — “Total bullshit. I worked my ass off for years,” she said. It certainly sounds that way. Before starting Millionaire’s Club International in 2000, she toiled in a number of positions ranging from garment center executive to astrologer before finally landing at Great Expectations, the country’s largest matchmaking service, running their Florida division and then as their director of marketing. Quickly realizing she had a knack for finding dates for just about everyone she met, she started her own firm and, she tells me, grossed $1 million the first year.

In 2001, she had a fateful meeting with Telepictures and pitched an idea for a reality show where one man would find love by ‘dating’ a group of women. Sounds familiar? Thanks to an inept agent at ICM (“He was terrible,” says Patti), The Bachelor premiered without Patti’s involvement and went on to become TV ratings gold. Undeterred, Patti “cried for a night,” got a new agent and moved on. After a few other stops and starts involving, among others, Simon Cowell and Ryan Seacrest, Patti found a television home with Bravo in 2008 with The Millionaire Matchmaker and is currently in her fifth season of the show. Her dating pet peeves? Rude guys: ”I want to teach young men some manners. They’ve got to learn to be gentlemen.” Scantily clad girls: “I always tell them ‘leave the Fredrick’s at home.’” And mothers who think their sons walk on water: “Jewish and Italian mothers are the worst. They think their sons are messiahs and expect everyone to treat them like one. It makes dating them impossible.”

Carr’s Carpetbagger Bagged

Kurt Andersen, writing in New York magazine a few weeks ago:

[David] Carr (whom I employed six years ago at Inside.com) is a quirky, entertaining, singular writer. I was pleasantly surprised when the paper of record hired and then promoted him to media columnist. But I was flabbergasted when they gave him a movie-awards blog (the Carpetbagger) and — the Times! — let him invent a weekly Web-video spot as a goofy man-on-the-street and celebrity-on-the-red-carpet interviewer. He’s produced three dozen so far.

There’s nothing else like them in mainstream media. He is preternaturally perfect for the Web — a friendly, wisecracking 50-year-old character with a Minnesota rasp, the very opposite of self-serious. His years at alternative weeklies make him “predisposed to try whatever. ‘Video would be nice,’ they said,” when the blog started. “And I thought, In for a penny, in for a pound. I said, ‘I’ll go around in Times Square and hop around like an idiot and that should be sufficient.’” His videos are an alt version of the Today show out in Rockefeller Plaza, or as if Tom Waits had Ryan Seacrest‘s job.

The results are in and have been examined, teasted apart and deconstructed. Thanks to everyone who took the time to not only read the Bagger, but comment as well.

Monday Morning Meta Media Mashup

A weekly meta-roundup of our favorite (mostly) New York media pundits, what they’re saying, why they’re saying it, and an all-important grade, subjective and arbitrary — just like their columns!

“A Cheeky Broadsheet’s Tabloid Makeover” | David Carr, New York Times

New York Times Carpetbagger and media reporter David Carr weighs in on the redesign of the New York Observer from a broadsheet to tabloid, and at once praises the salmon-hued newspaper’s terrific writing, “cheeky headlines and pointillistic graphics” while longing for the preredesign days of, say, last week, when carrying the paper suggested a person of “sprawling, catholic interests, media gossip chief among them.” GRADE: B+

“Success Stories” | James Brady, Forbes

Brady takes a look an early look at a media power couple, Bill and Carol Campbell Boggs (he an ex-Weekend Today host, she publisher of Hallmark magazine) managing to squeeze in a gratuitous Cipriani plug in the fourth paragraph (“A year and a half ago, she and I lunched at Cipriani on the Grand Central balcony”). Brady then spins the glorious tale of triumph over tragedy, the family’s beating of the odds … This is not a media column. It’s a Boggs press release, and cautionary tale of how not to write a column, media or otherwise. GRADE: D

Grammys Video: John Mayer Calls Ryan Seacrest ‘The Anderson Cooper Of E!’

He also answered the Jessica Simpson question in Japanese. Seriously:

Seacrest: I have to ask you—
Mayer: [interrupts] No you don’t.
Seacrest: Yes I do —
Mayer: — but whatever. No you don’t “have to,” say you “want to” ask me. Be a man, be a man!
Seacrest: I want to ask you about Jessica Simpson. I want to ask if the two of you are dating? And, if so, when will we officially see you out together?
Mayer: [Speaks in Japanese, roughly translated: "She is very beautiful and you are the last to know." UPDATED TRANSLATION: "She's a very gorgeous (or well put-together) woman and being together with her is the best."]
Seacrest: I think that’s fantastic. And I’m happy for you.
Mayer: Take it to the room. Find a Japanese person and decode it. Subtitle it. And then you’ll have your answer.
Seacrest: Are you happy?
Mayer: I’m very happy … with what I just did to you.
Seacrest: Yeah, exactly. Thanks, buddy. [Mayer leaves] Good to see you Johnny, take care, have fun! Bye!
