Anna Wintour Takes on New Role at Condé Nast

Anna Wintour, the famed editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been named artistic director of Condé Nast, a new role at the company. Wintour, who became editor of Vogue since 1988, will now oversee all of Condé’s brands, something S.I. Newhouse Jr. had done for 30 years. Newhouse recently began dialing back his responsibilities at Condé.

Despite this, it’s unclear exactly what being an “artistic director” entails. Here is how Charles Townsend, Condé Nast’s CEO, explains Wintour’s new position:

The establishment of an artistic director is a reflection of our commitment to preserve and champion all that exists ‘Only at Condé Nast.’ In today’s business environment, it is critical to promote and foster our established creative authority. This is the ideal time to leverage Anna’s extraordinary vision and leadership to amplify and elevate the profile of Condé Nast U.S. both domestically and abroad. Anna is an icon in the worlds of fashion, business and the arts, she has the foresight and wisdom to influence the major trends of our society and is respected globally as an accomplished businesswoman.

Okay then!

Wintour will (of course) remain as editor of Vogue and editorial director of Teen Vogue.

Breaking: Portfolio Folds

cover_portfolio_190.jpgPortfolio magazine, the two-year-old Conde Nast business monthly, has folded as of this morning. Thus far, there’s been no official word on whether Web site Portfolio.com will live on in any capacity, but it’s not looking likely, as there’s no mention of future plans for the site in an early report from Portfolio.com media blogger Jeff Bercovici, in which he details that Portfolio editor Joanne Lipman learned of the magazine’s closure from Conde Nast chairman S.I. Newhouse Jr. just this morning. Silicon Alley Insider’s Nicholas Carlson reports that staffers were called into a meeting with Conde executives where they were told the magazine will be shuttered and “there was a round of applause” for the embattled Lipman.

Portfolio launched two years ago with a large budget and a slew of big-name contributors. Its high profile made Portfolio the target of endless speculation from media watchers, with rumors of its potential closure floating around for some time. This month’s issue of Portfolio had the smallest number of ad pages in the magazine’s history. We’ll update you with more news as this story develops…

Update: Full memo from Conde on Portfolio‘s closure and word on the number of casualties…
