Ladies’ Home Journal Article Inspires Selfless Act

Last April, Ladies’ Home Journal published an inspirational, and sad, story about Dana Drouin, a 35-year-old mother of three who was battling cancer. Drouin worried that her young children would not remember her after her death, so she decided to create something tangible to leave behind, although she struggled during the last stages of her disease. Explained the article:

“[S]he’s been trying to write a journal to each child, along with a series of letters to be opened years from now at the birthdays, graduations, and weddings she’s not likely to see….It’s a beautiful ambition; so far, however, Dana has found it agonizing to fulfill.”

Reading Drouin’s story, Heidi Haller was so moved she tracked her down and traveled across the country to live with Drouin and take care of her.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about this woman I’d never met, and the next morning I tracked down her number,” Haller writes in February’s LHJ. “Divine intervention was clearly involved. All I knew was Dana’s name and the town in New Jersey where she lived, but she was listed. I picked up the phone to call, thinking she would probably find a polite way to hang up on me.”

min Honors Magazines, Editors At First Editorial & Design Awards

Even as the media industry is seeming falling apart all around us, the industry still insists on honoring its members. There’s no better time than the present to look on the bright side, we suppose.

This morning, min announced the winners of its first Editorial & Design Awards, awarding prizes in 27 different editorial and design categories. The award breakfast also celebrated the induction of several notable magazine industry movers and shakers into min’s Hall of Fame, including keynote speaker Jackie Leo, formerly of Reader’s Digest, Ladies’ Home Journal‘s Sally Lee, Ellen Levine of Hearst, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia chief creative officer Gael Towey and John Rasmus of National Geographic Adventure, as well as Vogue editrix Anna Wintour and former Variety editor Peter Bart.

Other top winners of the day included Food Network Magazine‘s win for Best Launch and Fortune, which nabbed the Best Feature award for its “Three Days that Shook the World” piece on the economic collapse of last fall. BusinessWeek won for Best Investigative & News Coverage for its cover story on subprime mortgages (and snagged a prize for best use of social media), while epicurean pub Saveur was honored for best design for a single issue for its Dining in America issue.

Entertainment Weekly, which recently cut staffers as part of Time Inc.‘s budget slashing, took home a number of awards including best photojournalism for its special Photo Issue, the best blog award for its PopWatch blog, best online column for Ken Tucker‘s “Watching TV” column and the top profile or Q&A prize for a feature story on Cheeta the chimp’s life after Hollywood. Self magazine, a Conde Nast title also recently plagued by staff cuts, took home two prizes.

Parents Deputy Editor Hickey Returns To Ladies’ Home Journal

Mary C. Hickey, formerly the deputy editor of Meredith‘s Parents magazine, has returned to Ladies’ Home Journal — where she previously worked in the mid-90′s — to serve as deputy editor for the women’s magazine also owned by Meredith.

According to LHJ editor-in-chief Sally Lee, Hickey “will be overseeing the magazine’s books coverage, along with relationships, news stories and general features.”

In addition to roles at LHJ and Parents, where she worked for nine years, Hickey has also previously served as articles editor at Glamour. Throughout her 20+ year career, Hickey’s work has also appeared in People, More, Life, The Washington Post, USA Today, BusinessWeek and Working Mother. She has also co-authored the book The Working Mother’s Guilt Guide and ~~currently works~~ worked as an adjunct professor of journalism at New York University for eight years.

Shake-Up at Meredith Sees Departure of Ladies Home Journal EIC

The Meredith Corporation has announced the departure of Ladies Home Journal editor-in-chief Diane Salvatore. Salvatore will be replaced by Parents editor Sally Lee, who will also oversee Circle, Fitness, American Baby Group, and Ser Padres.

The move appears to be part of a larger re-shuffling at Meredith, something Portfolio attributes to last month’s departure of editorial director Mike Lafavore. Other changes include Gayle Butler to Senior Vice President, where in addition to being Editor-in-Chief of Better Homes & Gardens, she will be editorial director of Country Home, Traditional Home and Midwest Living. As well, Dan Hickey moves to Vice President, Digital Content and Jim Blume to Group Editor. Full memo after the jump.
