Sacha Baron Cohen BAFTA Bit Causes Controversy

Shutterstock_SBCohenMTVMovieAwardsThis time last year, it was Daniel Day-Lewis and an empty chair. Last night at the BAFTA-LA Britannia Awards, Sacha Baron Cohen kicked it up a notch with the help of an elderly actress in a wheelchair. What’s next – Eddie Izzard and an electric chair?

Just as British Abe’s riff on Clint Eastwood proved impossible to beat at the podium during 2012 film awards season, Cohen’s hilarious prank of the audience with the help of an elderly co-conspirator is going to be very hard to top this year. Accepting the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy, the Borat/Bruno/Dictator star took receipt of a jerry-rigged cane from the woman, started doing his best “Little Tramp” imitation and then faux-tripped to send her rolling off the front of the stage. From a report by Deadline’s Pete Hammond:

The routine had half the packed Beverly Hilton audience roaring and the other half shaking in their Jimmy Choos wondering if he had really just killed an elderly woman in a wheelchair – or was it one of his patented tasteless gags?… The reaction was so visceral in the room host Rob Brydon had to literally calm down the normally more sedate British crowd. Some clearly thought it was real.

Fox Latino Overstates Penélope Cruz Case

First, Salma Hayek admits that she was, for a brief time at the very beginning of her LA acting career, a visitor with an expired Mexican visa. Now comes news that fellow Hispanic hottie Penélope Cruz and partner Javier Bardem, Spain’s chromosome equivalent of Brad and Angelina, are planning to birth their first child in LA rather than Madrid.

Like many EU nations, Spain allows for dual citizenship, even if the child is born abroad. So the couple (JaPen? PenJa?) has reportedly decided to do the hospital holiday season honors on this side of the Altantico to give Jr. the full benefit of an international citizenship.

Check out this hilariously melodramatic lead from Fox Latino, via MediaMatters.org:

These days, its seems as though a black cloud is hovering over Spain…

FBLA 20 Questions: Darleene Powells

DPT09.jpg

Journalist Darleene Powells, she of the three “E”s, keeps KCBS’s website news-a-licious. She blogs, she takes photographs, she’s all in love with her husband. She answered our uncannily revealing, albeit vapid, questions.

1. What newspapers do you read? It’s been a while since I regularly read a print newspaper. I, do however, get daily email summaries from the LA Times and the Daily News. I also read the Ventura County Star pages that my husband designs.

2. Which ones do you move your lips to while reading? Heehee. I haven’t moved my lips to reading since my Baby-Sitters Club Days.

3. Which Web sites are on your favorites–besides FBLA? I’m obsessed with local LA websites. I always read cbs2.com (of course!), LAO, Metroblogging LA and Franklin Avenue. Cute Overload, I Can Has Cheezburger?, Basic Instructions and Go Fug Yourself always make me laugh. I also like to read Luke Ford, The God Blog and Friendly Fire. I often like to see what my buddy and coworker beFrank is doing.

4. Where do you get your car washed? Um. What does that mean? What is this washing of the car?

5. Do you know your dentist’s first name? Heh. No. I hardly know his last name or the name of his practice. I think its in Calabasas?
