Media Loved Romney and Blasted Obama During Primaries

According to a new Pew study, from January 2 to April 15, the media’s coverage of Mitt Romney was more than twice as positive than that of President Barack Obama. The results of the extensive study showed that Romney’s coverage was 39 percent positive, while Obama’s coverage was 18 percent positive. As Newsweek/The Daily Beast notes, if anything bad happened during the Republican Primaries, it was Obama’s fault:

‘Day in and day out, he was criticized by the entire Republican field on a variety of policies,’ Mark Jurkowitz, the group’s associate director, says of Obama. ‘And he was inextricably linked to events that generated negative coverage.’

Pew used human researchers to comb 52 newspaper, web, TV and radio sources and computer analysis to scour over 11,000 news outlets to come up with these findings, so maybe this will be enough for Sarah Palin and others to finally give the Lamestream Media a chance.

If nothing else, Pew’s numbers will put LeBron James at ease. Until the playoffs start, that is.

Game Change Premiere Hits NYC

Game Change, HBO’s much buzzed-about film based on the 2008 presidential election and the 2010 book of the same name, held its premiere party at Ziegfeld Theatre last night.

Just a few of the celebs FishbowlNY spotted in attendance and on the red carpet: Julianne Moore, who does a spot-on, yet subtle portrayal of Sarah Palin; Sarah Paulson, who plays senior McCain campaign adviser Nicolle Wallace; the film’s executive producer, Tom Hanks, and his wife Rita Wilson; Jeff Zucker; Arianna Huffington; Monster’s Ball producer Lee Daniels; and just about every political pundit in town.

Unlike the book, which focused on all the candidates in the election, the movie zeroes in on John McCain‘s choice (or should we say, his advisers’ decision) to pick Palin as his running mate. And, while many are praising Moore for the way she humanized the Alaskan governor, Ed Harris brought his A-game too. Everything from his mannerisms to his posture were so McCain-like, it was eerie.

Game Change premieres this Saturday, March 10 on HBO.
Sarah Palin and Newsweek Are Perfect for Each Other

Last month, Sarah Palin blasted Newsweek for publishing the article, “Why Are Obama’s Critics So Dumb?” by Andrew Sullivan. She called Sullivan a “kook” and obviously missed the point of the piece. Fine. This is what she does — laments the “lame stream media” without ever understanding what she’s talking about. But today Palin has an article in Newsweek, about raising her son Trig. What changed? Nothing, really.

Palin, who was finally fading from the headlines, had a chance to put herself back in them with an article that someone else most likely wrote for her. One would think that if she was so angry at Newsweek she wouldn’t give the magazine the satisfaction, but that’s not the way she operates. Palin has shown for years now that she will do anything to remain in the press, so why not?

For Newsweek this was a no brainer (pun fully intended). The magazine under Tina Brown has been all about attention-grabbing items, and getting Palin to pen an article for the very magazine she recently attacked is par for the course.

Sarah Palin Dislikes Newsweek, Kooks

Sarah Palin has joined the masses of people heaving attacks at Newsweek and its cover piece, “Why Are Obama’s Critics So Dumb?” which was written by Andrew Sullivan. The Cutline reports that Palin tweeted to Newsweek, “Know what’s truly ‘dumb’? Giving a cover story to the Trig Truther conspiracy kook writer who thinks I didn’t give birth to my son.”

Palin was referring to Sullivan doubting that she was truly Trig’s mother. Sullivan responded to Palin that he didn’t know what she was talking about:

I have no idea, as I have said time and time again, whether Sarah Palin gave birth to Trig, and have never written such a thing. All I ever asked for a person who could become president was some basic evidence for her insane story, like medical records that most candidates have no problem providing. She never provided any, and preferred to withdraw from seeking public office rather than do so.

Of course, no response to the substance. She doesn’t do substance. Neither, it seems, does much of the rightwing blogosphere.

Super Arianna: Huffington Gets Her Own Comic

According to a press release obtained by Adweek, the comic will cover her “time studying in England, her marriage to a congressman, her run as governor of California and how her website was sold to AOL for $315 million.”

The cover is a little disappointing, isn’t it? Couldn’t we at least get a cape? Oh well. If you’re interested, the issues comes out in October.

The Huffington Post Live-blogs Sarah Palin’s Emails

We certainly hope you have better/less creepy things to do today than scour through the emails Sarah Palin sent and received while governor of Alaska. FishbowlNY suggests finally figuring out the name of “the other guy” in Wham! or baking us some cookies. If those ideas don’t entice you like Palin’s correspondence, you should head to The Huffington Post, because it’s providing live updates on the emails right now.

Here’s our favorite so far:

On Feb. 19, 2007, deputy legislative director Chris Clark recommended to Palin that she meet Pete Rouse, ‘who’s now chief of staff for some guy named Barack Obama,’ when she was in Washington, D.C. on an upcoming trip.

Palin’s reply: ‘I’m game to meet him.’

It’s worth noting that Obama announced he was running for president on Feb. 10 – so this email was either incredibly close-minded, or sarcastic.

Who knows what the email meant, what really matters is that everyone is being incredibly weird about searching them. If you’re okay with that, knock yourself out and head to the HuffPo’s live-blog.

Help the New York Times Read Through Sarah Palin’s Emails

In terms of juicy reading, you can’t get any better than this: on Friday, the State of Alaska is releasing more than 24,000 of Sarah Palin’s e-mails that will cover much of her tenure as the governor of Alaska. Because Palin frequently used her personal email to cover state business, including with her husband, those emails have been determined to be public record, reports the New York Times. Since practically everything Palin does is considered news as it is, her personal emails as governor are a veritable goldmine.

But the problem is that there are just so many of them! So the Times is actually turning to crowd-sourcing, and asking its readers for help sifting through the documents in its race to get the best stories out first. The Times‘ Caucus blog posts this unusual request:

Times reporters will be in Juneau, the state capital, to begin the process of reviewing the e-mails, which we will be posting on nytimes.com starting on Friday afternoon E.D.T. We’re asking readers to help us identify interesting and newsworthy e-mails, people and events that we may want to highlight. Interested users can fill out a simple form to describe the nature of the e-mail, and provide a name and e-mail address so we’ll know who should get the credit. Join us here on Friday afternoon and into the weekend to participate.

So if you’ve ever had a secret ambition to do some investigative journalism for the Times, see your name credited in the paper, or just gossip incessantly about Sarah Palin, this one is for you.

Sarah Palin and Donald Trump Ate Pizza in Times Square

Because we know you were up all night wondering, FishbowlNY is providing you with an update on the Sarah Palin and Donald Trump Dinner Extravaganza we told you about yesterday.

Turns out they ate some slices at a Famiglia’s in Times Square. Of course.

They didn’t have dinner at one of the hundreds of great restaurants across the five boroughs. No, they had slices at a chain in Times Square. That’s like driving to the Grand Canyon to take a picture of a tree.

Who knows where the Palin Tour will take her next, but luckily we don’t have to worry about it anymore: She’s reportedly heading further north today.

Possible dinner conversation topics include:

Getting the media to hang on your every word even when all of your words never add up to anything worthwhile

Jack Stuef, Author of Offensive Post on Trig Palin, Leaves Wonkette

One month ago, Jack Stuef, an editor of Wonkette, became notorious for writing a post where he mocked Sarah Palin‘s toddler son Trig. Wrote Stuef (among other things): “What’s he dreaming about? Nothing. He’s retarded.” Trig Palin has Down syndrome.

People were, rightfully, enraged, and not just conservative bloggers. It was a bipartisan sort of fury. First Stuef issued an apology. And Wonkette editor Ken Layne told David Weigel at Slate that he had placed Stuef on probation. But when nine advertisers began boycotting Wonkette, the website pulled the post.

We wonder if this was when Stuef began thinking of leaving Wonkette. In any event, last week he wrote a goodbye post, where he offered a sincere look at what it’s like to be a 22-year-old blogger who has to work every day in the space between provocative and offensive, and how sometimes one can slip up.

At times, especially when I’m tired and have to somehow hit eight posts when there’s no real news happening, I’ve broken some of my own. I don’t like to make easy jokes. But I have. Kind of often. A few times I’ve made fun of people who really didn’t deserve it, and when it was pointed out to me, I apologized. This sort of thing happens, even when you make a point of trying to stay true to yourself as much as you can, because you’re human. Overall, though, out of all the 1,642 posts and countless thousands of jokes I’ve written here, I can say I’m proud of most of them.

As bloggers, FishbowlNY can’t help but see where Stuef is coming from, even if we never condoned his Trig post. We wish him the best.

Did Someone Pay for the Leaked Sarah Palin Twitter Story?

A big story broke on the Daily Caller today with a series of leaked Twitter direct messages from top Sarah Palin aide Rebecca Mansour mocking major political figures like Mitt Romney and even Palin’s own daughter Bristol Palin. Mansour sent private messages calling Romney’s fans “wacky as hell,” and said conservative blogger Erick Erickson of Red State was “a total douchebag.” She also said about Bristol: “She will hold her at arm’s length. Even Thatcher was never able to disown her screw up son Mark. It’s a Mom thing,”

But an intriguing part to this story is how the direct messages were leaked in the first place. Politico’s Ben Smith wrote that he has been waiting for this story to break for a few months, as somebody tried to sell him the same emails last fall. “Does Politico pay for exclusives? Cause I’m looking to sell. I have 122 direct messages from Sarah Palin staffer Rebecca Mansour,” the person “Toki de la Vega” emailed.

When Smith responded with a counter-offer of “lunch and ‘undying gratitude,’” he received this response:

“Sorry, Ben, but it’s going to take more than a happy meal and a hand shake to get me to betray someone’s confidence. Only freshly printed 100 dollar bills help me get over feelings of guilt,” wrote the emailer, who continued, “Would it violate some fake journalistic ethics and standards to get me in contact someone who does pay? I know that the thought of blogging about this is making your panties wet. The topics range from Chuck Hagel to Ricky Hollywood and everything else in between. It’s a f***ing blogger’s gold mine.”

Sarah Palin Struggles to Name Influential Journalists at Correspondents’ Dinner

Sarah Palin, who rocketed to fame after being unable to form a single coherent answer during an interview with Katie Couric, had a similar moment after the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

At the MSNBC after party, NBC’s blog NBCU Direct asked several famous attendees the following question: “Who do you think is the most influential journalist today?”

This actually turned out to be an amazing question choice. Some had answers right off the top of their head: Eliot Spitzer confidently chose Brian Williams, based on his viewership, followed by Jon Stewart. SNL’s Bill Hader got credit for choosing a non-TV personality, The New Yorker‘s David Grann. But others struggled to even come up with a name (or seemed reluctant to name someone other than themselves, like Bret Baier).

Sarah Palin, well, she was one of the people who struggled. When asked she responded, “Oh my goodness, that’s a great question!” with excessive brightness, before asking her husband Todd Palin what he thought.

Todd had nothing

Palin returned, “Um, gosh, that’s a great question, I have to think about it, OK? Because there are many.”

At that moment she walked up to Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren, with whom she was attending the MSNBC party, and then turned back to the NBC cameras and shouted: “Greta Van Susteren!”

Roger Ailes Unhappy with Sarah Palin

According to Gabriel Sherman, Roger Ailes advised Sarah Palin not to comment on the tradgedy involving Gabrielle Giffords, and when she did anyway, espcially in her typical “take brain out of head, place brain on table, then speak” way, it angered Ailes:

Ailes was not pleased with her decision, which turned out to be a political debacle for Palin, especially her use of the historically loaded term “blood libel” to describe the actions of the media. ‘The Tucson thing was horrible,’ said a person familiar with Ailes’s thinking. ‘Before she responded, she was making herself look like a victim. She was winning. She went out and did the blood libel thing, and Roger is thinking, ‘Why did you call me for advice?’

If this is true, and Palin deliberately went against the advice of the man who not only pays her a hefty salary, but pulls major weight in the Republican party, FishbowlNY would like to welcome Ailes to our WTF Palin? Club, which was formed years ago. We have t-shirts. We’ll send you one.

Desiree Rogers, Kathie Lee Gifford & The Millionaire Matchmaker Meltdown

— DIANE CLEHANE

There were plenty of movers, shakers and deal makers at Michael’s today to keep things interesting, but a little birdie told me the media A-list was also out in force yesterday. So, as a public service to Lunch’s faithful readers, here’s who was there on Tuesday: Matt Lauer with Jack Welch, Page Six’s new editor Emily Smith and publicist Peggy Siegal presiding over one of her legendary lunches with Ed Zwick, Jean Doumanian, Meryl Poster, Jonathan Alter, Jodi Applegate and Lori Singer (Yes, the one from Footloose!).

With that bit of news out of the way, I can tell you that I was intrigued by all the networking I saw today. It was a little more overt than usual — and that’s saying something. However, some folks, like my Greenwich neighbor Kathie Lee Gifford (looking better than ever, by the way), just come to this quiet little spot to relax with friends. I asked Kathie what she thought of co-host Hoda Kotb‘s new book, Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair and Kathie Lee, and she told me, “I’m so happy for her! She has been working so hard. Tonight she finds out if she made it on to the Times‘ best seller list, and these days that takes a lot.” We wouldn’t bet against her.

But not all the action was happening in the dining room. We spotted Patti Stanger of Bravo’s Millionaire Matchmaker pacing outside of Michael’s front window, screaming into her cellphone, stomping her feet and dropping f-bombs like there was no tomorrow. I have no idea who was on the receiving end of the ear-splitting call, but I can tell you it wasn’t exactly a love connection.

Here’s the rundown on today’s crowd:

1. Lord and Lady Rothschild in from across the pond. Tally ho!

2. Joan Jakobson, Pamela Fiori and Thomas P. Farley, a young curly haired gent we initially didn’t recognize but now know as the host of the web TV show New York Insider. (Nice to meet you, Thomas!)

3. Kathie Lee Gifford, sipping a white wine spritzer with Patricia Kluge and two well-heeled gal pals.

4. Stephen Swid
