Saul Hansell Departs AOL

Saul Hansell, the New York Times veteran who founded its Bits technology blog, and left in late 2009 for AOL, is leaving his post.

All Things D reports that Hansell is moving on to become an entrepreneur in residence at Betaworks, a company which has started and invested in companies like Bit.ly and Tweetdeck.

In a post on his blog, Hansell said his departure wasn’t about AOL:

I know my friends in the technology press well enough to suspect some of them will see my move as part of a broader trend at AOL. I’m not sure the easy take is the right one. Based on my experience, I am more bullish on Tim Armstrong’s clear vision of a company built from the ground up for online journalism and the potential of AOL’s many assets to achieve that vision.

Jon Dube Named GM of News and Info At AOL

According to a report on Business Insider, Jon Dube has been tapped to lead AOL’s journalism team as new senior VP and GM of AOL News & Information. The news of Dube’s hiring came courtesy of a tweet from AOL’s Seed.com programming director, Saul Hansell. Hansell, who used to serve as a reporter at The New York Times, didn’t spare much of the 140-character limit with the following tweet:

“Super excited: Jon Dube (@cyberjournalist), formerly head of ABCNews.com, will now be GM of AOL News.”

Dube took a more formal approach in expressing his enthusiasm for his new role:

“I believe AOL is better positioned than any other company today to marry innovative technology with high-quality original journalism in a way that creates the best online experience imaginable.”

Prior to joining AOL, Dube was VP of ABCNews.com. He will report in to David Eun, president of AOL Media & Studios.

Saul Hansell Leaves New York Times For AOL

Today is just the day for former print people to move on over to the other (digital) side: first was MaryAnn Bekkedahl from Rodale Inc., and now New York Times tech writer Saul Hansell is leaving his Bits blog behind to be the first announced staffer on AOL‘s Seed.com, a new “content managing platform.”

Hansell has worked for the Times for 17 years, and for nytimes.com for two. AOL has been expanding its niche blog structure lately, and has been on somewhat of a hiring frenzy, though ironically it’s still looking to trim 1/3 of its workforce.
