Boring Guy Tom Hanks Tops ’100 Most Trusted People in America’ List

Reader’s Digest just published a piece titled the “100 Most Trusted People in America” and Tom Hanks took the top spot. This is not surprising. Hanks is perhaps the most boring dude alive. You know those dreams you have where nothing significant happens and you wake up knowing you had a dream so you feel like you should tell someone about it but it’s so vague you end up not saying anything? That’s what hanging out with Hanks is like.

Anyway, Sandra Bullock was number two in the poll. Which uh, see above.

Other highlights:

Jay Leno was more trusted than David Letterman (were people drunk when they voted?)

Robin Roberts was the most trusted woman on TV

Other highly trusted media people include Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams, Katie Couric, Barbara Walters, Anderson Cooper, Oprah Winfrey, George Stephanopoulos, Scott Pelley, Kelly Ripa, Steve Harvey and Savannah Guthrie.

Judge Judy is more trusted than Matt Lauer.

Kathie Lee Gifford Wanted to Publish an Ad Defending Matt Lauer

The extensive bashing of Matt Lauer has left him with few fans, but Kathie Lee Gifford — in her own goofy way — wanted to make sure everyone knew he still had friends at the Today show. The New York Daily News reports that her plan was to buy a full page ad in USA Today, featuring signatures from “hundreds” of Today staffers.

The idea of a pity party didn’t sit well with Lauer, so he asked her not to do it. Instead, she told the Daily News all about it, and now everyone knows about the ad anyway. Well done.

Here’s the ad’s cheesy copy:

Sandra Lee Serves Up a New Magazine and Novel; Hoda Kotb Celebrates Book Number Two with Today Show Gang

Every time I think it can’t get anyone more Fellini-esque at 55th and Fifth, another Wednesday at Michael’s proves me wrong. All that was missing today was a lion tamer and clown shot out of a cannon. There were so many ‘acts’ going on simultaneously I hardly knew where to look.

While I dined with Food Network star Sandra Lee (and tried my best to hear her over the roar of the crowd even though we were sitting next to each other), there was an intimate party of 20 for Hoda Kotb being thrown by her Today show co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. The gals were celebrating the release of Hoda’s new book, Ten Years Later: Six People Who Faced Adversity and Transformed Their Lives (Simon & Schuster). Hoda and Kathie Lee, who spend more time together than most married couples, looked fresher than springtime in Crayola colored (sleeveless!) dresses and were the first to arrive for the noontime fete. Minutes later, the back corner of the front room was jammed with members of the Today show, as well as plenty of well-dressed gals who were there to toast Hoda. The gang was really whooping it up and, of course, a camera man was there to capture it all for posterity or, more likely, for tomorrow’s fourth hour of Today.

I arrived a few minutes before noon to meet Sandra Lee and she came right in the door behind me. After spending just a few minutes with her, it’s easy to see why the creator of the phenomenally successful Semi-Homemade brand is one of the Food Network’s biggest stars. She’s the in-the-know girlfriend who everyone wishes they had. Within minutes, we were trading tips on our favorite places to shop for bargains. For cake decorating, hers is New York Cake & Baking on 22nd and Sixth for the most divine sugar roses — “You can get a whole batch for under $10!”

Diane Clehane and Sandra Lee

She arrived laden with proofs for the next issue of her new magazine with TV Guide Magazine named — what else? – Sandra Lee. They’ve already published a Christmas issue, and the January/February “Love” issue is out now. EIC Sandra is in the midst of editing the Easter issue and told me she was trying to explain to a male staffer earlier today why birds’ nests made from shredded coconut should be dyed green instead of brown. It’s all in the details. As the faithful viewers of Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee (now in its 15th season!) know, no one does holidays like her. (“I am working on my latest Cher incarnation. Every Halloween I have to do Cher!”) The Emmy winner covers it all from the recipes to the cocktails to her trademark ‘tablescapes’ (my personal favorite) to help viewers enjoy entertaining at home without the heavy-handed pretense, over the top expense or work intensive preparation that no one has time for anyway. When I asked her where he love of holidays came from she told me, “When I was a child we didn’t celebrate holidays so when I was 18, that was it. It was Halloween, Christmas and Easter every day.”

WPIX Takes a Victory Lap in Morning; Beats WNYW, Edges Today

WPIX is flexing its muscle in morning. The Nielsen overnight ratings for yesterday’s show is some great news for Channel 11. The PIX Morning News claims a huge victory in the advertiser-friendly Adults 25 to 54 demographic.

Not only did WPIX defeat its main competition in the 7 a.m. hour, WNYW with Good Day New York, the broadcast anchored by Sukanya Krishnan and Frances Rivera, eclipsed NBC’s Today show.

PIX averaged an impressive 1.5 with a share just under 10. Today with Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie fell just short of WPIX’s performance with a 1.4 and a 9.2 share of the audience. Ratings for WLNY’s new morning venture, The Couch, are not tabulated at this time.

Earlier this month, Dave Price teamed with Rosanna Scotto at WNYW. WPIX made its own pre-dawn splash, giving Lionel a large role during the 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. news block.

(Video) With Ann Curry Pushed Aside, Savannah Guthrie Expected to Get Spot on Today Couch

The rumors have been running rampant. The speculation has been speeding through the blogosphere. This morning it became a reality! A teary-eyed Ann Curry left the Today Show as co-anchor with Matt Lauer. In one of television’s more emotional goodbyes, Curry started the final segment before 9 a.m. announcing, “This is not easy to say.”

By the time she finished the sentence telling millions that it was her final time on the program in that capacity, her voice cracked.

Curry will remain a part of Today.

“They’re giving some fancy, new titles, which essentially means that I’m going to get tickets to every big story we want to cover,” Curry says.

Curry, co-anchor with Lauer since Meredith Vieira walked away last year, saved her most emotional moment for last.

“For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker, I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line,” Curry says. “But man, I did try.”

continued…

(VIDEO) Rolling out the Red Carpet for TIME 100

Honorees Matt Lauer and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, with Time managing editor Rick Stengel.

They come from all walks of life. They are actors, musicians, world leaders, and sports figures–and that just scratches the surface. Time Magazine held its annual 100 Most Influential People in the World gala last night at the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle.

While more than half of the honorees were unable to attend, there was still no shortage of stars lighting the red carpet.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was on the guest list, and although she failed to take the stroll, a Homeland Security officer complete with a sniffing dog canvassed the confines.

Pres. Barack Obama was chosen in the magazine’s Leaders category, along with the presumptive Republican nominee, Mitt Rommey. Both were, not surprisingly, no shows. Romney was winning primaries in the Northeast, while Obama was appearing on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” from North Carolina.

NBC’s Matt Lauer was listed among a group of Icons. Lauer recently signed a contract extension with the Today show at a reported $25 million per year.

FishbowlNY chatted with “Today” show third hour co-host Savannah Guthrie who praised her friend and colleague.

More video clips from the red carpet after the jump…

Manhattan’s A-List Turns Out for Harvey Weinstein’s Giants Pep Rally

I’ve been covering Wednesday’s at Michael’s for five years and have never seen anything like the head-spinning scene that unfolded there today. Harvey Weinstein and Steve Tisch threw a pep rally to end all pep rallies, and the media A-list all came out to cheer on their favorite team. Peggy Siegal and her minions descended on the place before the crowd rushed in with plenty of New York Giants paraphernalia, transforming the California cool decor into an indoor tailgate party.

By noon, I counted at least a dozen paparazzi staked out at the entrance, and they certainly weren’t disappointed. Drew Nieporent was the first to arrive (“What’s for lunch?”), and in short order the lounge was flooded with famous folks, including Brian Williams, Gayle King, Piers Morgan, Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb (wearing newly identical red dresses and looking fabulous), former governor George Pataki, Matt Lauer and various members of the Tisch family.

Katie Couric and Harvey Weinstein

Everyone’s mind was on the big game; conventional wisdom says the Giants will be this year’s Super Bowl champs, but it’s going to be a close one. (All except Jerry Della Femina, who predicts the Patriots will take it 27-24.) “I think it’s going to be a squeaker,” offered Andrew Ross Sorkin. “At least I hope so because it will be a better game.”

Not surprisingly, Giants legend Frank Gifford, who will be watching the game from his home in Greenwich with family and friends, predicts a 30-10 win for his former team. “Eli Manning has really come into his own as a quarterback,” he told me. “But a quarterback is only as good as his team. They’re a great team. If you were playing for the Giants, you’d be a great quarterback.” Doubtful, but we appreciate the sentiment. Brian Williams, who’ll be going to the game, refused to speculate on the final score for fear of tempting the gods. ”You just don’t do that,” he told me.

Martha Stewart’s Daughter, Alexis, Gives Awkward Answers on ‘Today’

This morning on the “Today” show, Alexis Stewart, daughter of Martha Stewart, was interviewed about her new book Whateverland, along with the co-author, Jennifer Koppelman Hutt. The two segments were brutal to watch.

You’d think that someone being on the “Today” show would be happy about being given the opportunity to promote their work, but nope! When she wasn’t giving curt answers, Alexis was shooting daggers at Savannah Guthrie for wanting to talk about her famous mother, as if anyone would actually care about the book otherwise.

Not only that, apparently Stewart and Koppelman Hutt are no longer friends, which lead to multiple awkward moments. At one point Stewart declared, “If you want to punish somebody, never talking to them again is a really good method.” Uh, thanks for the tip?

Memo to Alexis: Lighten up. You’re a super rich white woman. Things could be a lot worse.
