Cumulus’ 94.7 Conducts Weekend Stunt Ahead of Tomorrow’s New Format

Cumulus ended its WPLJ simulcast with new acquisition 94.7. The station with call letters WRXP began the final push before it debuts the new format.

The station will unveil its format of choice tomorrow morning, fittingly at 9:47 a.m.

Until that time, Cumulus is having some fun with listeners. In an entertaining stunt called “Wheel of Formats,” it is spending the weekend spinning the wheel of possible genres. Some are serious contenders, while others are completely throwing everyone off.

For example, the short previews take listeners from a Michael Jackson station to all Disco music. There was the comedy format, and separately “Weird” Al Yankovic and his pop parodies, along with a Beatles “Fab Format.” Those are in the extremely unlikely category, as are the 24/7 polka tunes.

But, a stronger contender is a country format. The “wheel” landed on a pair of country possibilities–one featuring Nashville “legends,” with the other highlighting current artists.

Related: Cumulus Begins 94.7 Ownership with Simulcast of WPLJ

Also, on the station during this weekend was the whimisical all-New Jersey music, with songs from Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, and Whitney Houston. Her signature, I’ll Always Love You segued into a Love Songs format.

Taking the ‘McKay Way’ to WPLJ, WABC

There are dozens of radio traffic reporters in the New York market. Many of them could be deemed “interchangable” with a cookie cutter sound. Only a select few in the last 20 years have been able to make a career, and be known to a large number of listeners. And then there’s Jeff McKay!

McKay is clearly the most engaging traffic reporter in the business. Therefore, his stock is constantly on the rise. After many years as a full-time gridlock guy on 1010 WINS, mainly nights and weekends, McKay landed as the morning traffic anchor with a managerial role at Merlin Media’s ill-conceived, FM News. But McKay has never been ill-conceived. His reports stay true every 10 minutes, never crossing into gimmicky. He straddles a line effortlessly from entertaining to informing like few in the traffic world have ever done.

Once the writing was on the wall at Merlin last year, and Merlin fired the majority of its staff, McKay began his quest for the next radio home.

“I was looking at a number of scenarios, in radio, television and outside of broadcasting, and had received several offers I liked,” McKay admits. “However, the possibilities with Radiate Media and Cumulus was the best position for me and my family.”

NYSBA Hall of Fame Ceremony Postponed by Sandy

There is another casualty of the dangerous Hurricane Sandy. The New York State Broadcasting Association has postponed its annual Hall of Fame reception originally scheduled for Thursday evening at the Paley Center.

“After discussions with the Paley Center, we simply cannot guarantee the venue will be operational by Thursday,” NYSBA president David Donovan wrote in an email. “It all depends on [the] severity of storm’s damage, availability of power and transportation.”

Donovan says the event will be rescheduled for a date to be determined in November or December.

This year’s class includes former WNBC sports anchor Len Berman, WPLJ (and former WHTZ/Z100) morning show host Scott Shannon, and WOR Radio staple Joan Hamburg.

Len Berman, Scott Shannon, and Mike Wallace Among the NYSBA 2012 Hall of Famers

The New York State Broadcasters Association has revealed its Class of 2012 Hall of Fame inductees. The NYSBA honors on-air radio and TV talent from across the state.

This year, the NYSBA adds six people for enshrinement.

Mike Wallace is being inducted posthumously. The iconic “in your face” 60 Minutes reporter started full-time at CBS in 1960. He was a charter member of TV’s longest running newsmagazine when it debuted in 1968.

Wallace took home 21 Emmy Awards. He died in April at the age of 93.

Len Berman was a popular sportscaster, known primarily for 24 years at WNBC/Channel 4, before leaving in 2009. Berman also had a stint at WCBS/Channel 2 earlier in his career. An eight-time Emmy winner, Berman covered virtually all major sporting events, especially those involving the New York teams. Since leaving WNBC, Berman has maintained his monthly blooper segment, Spanning the World, on the Today Show.

“I am deeply honored to be chosen to be inducted into the NYSBA Hall of Fame with some of my broadcast heroes like Walter Cronkite and Mike Wallace,” Berman tells FishbowlNY. ”And to be one of the few sportscasters in the Hall makes it doubly special.”

Berman has written four books, and has resurfaced on local TV with a weekly segment on WNYW/Channel 5.

Scott and Todd Return to Dish Nation on WWOR

Get out the pancake makeup, here we go again!

Dish Nation, the entertainment and gossip show, which first launched as a summer tryout in 2011, is premiering September 10. It returns to WWOR/Channel 9, and most important, WPLJ’s Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill are, once again part of the cast.

The show separates itself from the overabundance of entertainment magazine shows by featuring radio personalities from across the country as the stars from their own broadcasts.

The show, seen on Fox stations nationwide, airs on WWOR nightly at 6.

Scott and Todd, together on WPLJ for more than 20 years, told FishbowlNY prior to the Dish Nation debut last summer they won’t act like TV stars on radio.

“The only thing we do differently is we have makeup on,” Shannon admitted.

Longtime WINS Anchor Sandi Klein Takes Her Leave

Klein at the mic/newyork.cbslocal.com

Nearly two decades have passed since Sandi Klein first cracked the mic on 1010/WINS. Yesterday, after 13 years as an afternoon anchor, Klein pulled her last air shift at the station.

Since November 2010, as part of an on-air restructuring, Klein and veteran p.m. drive anchor Larry Kanter worked a newly configured midday shift from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

She went “off format” for a brief goodbye to listeners.

“More people get their news from 1010 WINS than from any other radio station in the nation. And it’s been my honor and pleasure to deliver it for the past 20 years,” Klein says.

Then Klein announced newscast credits “for the last time,” including the service aide and editor.

Cumulus Changes: John Foxx Gets WPLJ PD Gig; Jeff Miles Leaves Middays

It’s a busy day in the Cumulus neighborhood. Several reports indicate John Foxx is about to land at WPLJ as program director. What that means for the legendary programmer, Scott Shannon, is unclear. But All Access says Foxx will work “alongside” Shannon. But there’s no explanation as to whether Foxx will be an equal to Shannon or if, in fact, he’ll become Shannon’s boss.

Shannon, who turns 65 this year, celebrated 20 years in the morning with Todd Pettengill in 2011.

Foxx, who had worked for sister station KLIF in Dallas, joins WPLJ July 9th. WPLJ operations manager Tony Mascaro adds the same title with WABC

Shannon promoted Mascaro to operations manager in 2010 after his 13-year stint as music director.

In other WPLJ news, midday jock Jeff Miles is said to be leaving for an undisclosed Cumulus property. That announcement will be made later this month.

This week we asked you to select your favorite radio teams spanning the decades in New York. FishbowlNY gave you several to choose from in the news field, primarily at Newsradio 880, where anchor teams are their bread and butter. Other categories represented were talk, sports, and music morning show.

Longtime WPLJ morning team Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill are returning to TV as contributors to Dish Nation in the fall. The six-week successful pilot ran during the summer on WWOR/Channel 9.

Along with Scott and Todd, Dish Nation showcases disc jockeys on-air in various other markets. They “dish” out the latest on celebrity couples, breaking entertainment news, hot pop culture moments or what happened on reality TV the night before.

“This summer, Twentieth Television and the FOX Television Stations set out to present viewers a fresh, funny and modern take on the entertainment news genre,” Paul Franklin, EVP & general manager of Broadcast Sales, Twentieth Television, says. “As exemplified by the positive viewer reaction, laugh-out-loud segments, and likeable radio personalities, we have succeeded. Serving as the perfect complement to magazine programs, especially TMZ, and off-network sitcoms, we are thrilled to launch Dish Nation nationwide later this year.”

Veteran Overnighter Dave Stewart Leaves WPLJ on ‘Great Terms’

WPLJ overnight jock Dave Stewart has crossed a generation of fans, starting at the station in 1989. He found his “voice” two years later as the pre-dawn DJ.

As we reported Friday, Stewart was among more than a dozen staffers laid off at WPLJ and WABC-AM.

Stewart says it was harder for program director Scott Shannon and general manager Steve Borneman to part ways with their longtime air personality.

“Steve was heartbroken,” Stewart tells FishbowlNY. “It was harder on them than it was on me.”

His transition from swing announcer to the overnight happened around the same time as Shannon’s debut at WPLJ.

“[Scott] liked somebody with production skills, which I had, for the morning show to help out with them,” Stewart recalls. “We just all kind of clicked.”

Scott and Todd Producer Running NYC Marathon In Honor of Dad

Thousands of people, from amateurs to world class runners, will trek across the five boroughs Sunday, November 6 in the New York City Marathon.

One of those people, making his first attempt at pounding the pavement for 26.2 miles, is WPLJ morning show executive producer Joe Pardavila.

“I’ve cut Doritos, Twinkies, and Mountain Dew from my diet, so I should be ready to go,” Pardavila says. “I also run about 10 miles a day, so that should help too.”

But for Pardavila, who works closely with Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill and is affectionately known as “Monkey Boy,” this was more than good excuse to diet.

“I’m running in the memory of my father, Arturo, who passed away 6 years ago after [a] long battle [with] Huntington’s disease,” Pardavila says. “I’m doing anything I can to raise awareness and money for the cause.”

To that end, he is seeking donations for his marathon run. Those interested can get more details at: http://www.crowdrise.com/MONKSMARATHONRUN/fundraiser/pljmonk

Pardavila was been with Scott and Todd on WPLJ since the mid 1990s (this is their 20th year together) as associate producer. He was promoted to his current position in 2004.

Former Z100 and WPLJ Personality Patty Steele Joins 77 WABC

Veteran radio personality Patty Steele has signed on with WABC-AM, effective next Monday. Steele will be producer and sidekick for midday host Joe Crummey.

For several years at WPLJ, Steele had been news director and morning show on-air contributor for Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill.

“Patty is loved by all who know her. She’s whip-smart, spontaneous, and real,” Laurie Cantillo, WABC program director, tells FishbowlNY. ”When she was a guest recently with Joe, I was blown away by the listener response, with many calling her a ‘breath of fresh air.’”

Steele also spent time as a DJ at WHTZ/Z100, and was an anchor at WCBS 880 in the 1990s.

Crummey’s show airs from 10 a.m. to noon.

WPLJ’s Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill Becoming Part of Dish Nation for Six Weeks on WWOR

For 20 years, Scott Shannon (left) and Todd Pettengill have been a top-rated morning show on WPLJ. Their comedic banter infuses a large dose of celebrity talk.

Now, Scott and Todd are bringing their famous radio hijinks to television.

Starting on Monday, July 25, Shannon and Pettengill are joining forces with DJs from three other markets to form Dish Nation. It will run on Fox stations in seven markets, including WWOR/Channel 9.

This idea was hatched by a Los Angeles-based producer. Pettengill says it took another year for Fox to get on board for the summer trial.

“We never dreamed it was going to happen,” Shannon tells FishbowlNY.

WPLJ’s ‘Scott and Todd’ Make Inappropriate Comment to Traffic Reporter

This morning on WPLJ/95.5, hosts Scott Shannon and Todd Pettengill had their usual banter with traffic reporter Joe Nolan just like any other day.

However, in the 8 a.m. hour, the veteran team may have pushed the envelope too far.

Shannon and Pettengirl got into a brief discussion with Nolan, who they praised for on-air training of WNYW/Fox 5 morning traffic anchor Ines Rosales.

The tone immediately shifted, despite clearly teasing, referring to Rosales’ “body.”

Moments later, the show hosts went off-color on Nolan, saying he was using Rosales’ “ass as a pillow.”

Shadow Traffic, which employs Rosales and Nolan, had no comment.

FishbowlNY also attempted to reach a spokesman for Scott and Todd in the Morning.
