Billboard Adds Chart-Topping Staffers

BillboardLogoThe sweeping hand of Janice Min is at it again. In a memo to staff, the Guggenheim Media Entertainment Group co-president and chief creative officer announced an impressive roster of Billboard hires.

Starting today, Rob Hewitt is the publication’s new design director. He comes to Billboard after three years with Conde Nast Traveler. Hewitt once worked with Min at InStyle and has also held positions at Premiere, GQ and New York magazine.

Joining Hewitt as Billboard art director is Frank Augugliaro, previously with Esquire, alongside several recognizable new reporter and editor names. It’s great for example to see Frank DiGiacomo back in the front-line entertainment journalism mix.

Full memo after the jump.

Billboard Revamps Cover

Here’s the revamped Billboard magazine, featuring “The coolest weirdo,” Beck. Not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but we do like the new look cover.

Janice Min  — who was recently promoted to co-president/chief creative officer of Guggenheim Media’s Entertainment Group — tweeted that Shanti Marlar, Austin Hargrave and Jennifer Laski were behind the redesign. Congrats all, it looks great.

Hugo Lindgren Segues to The Hollywood Reporter

HugoLindgrenTwitterProfilePicVia Twitter and internal memo this morning (PT), Janice Min has shared some more, major first-work-week-of-January news. Hugo Lindgren, formerly with the New York Times Magazine, is headed west at the end of the month to oversee The Hollywood Reporter:

Dear Staff:

In case you missed the meeting this morning, I wanted to introduce you to our newest addition here, Hugo Lindgren. I am thrilled to tell you that Hugo is joining The Hollywood Reporter as acting editor while a team including executive editor Matthew Belloni, creative director Shanti Marlar and photo and video director Jennifer Laski get going working on Billboard with me. Hugo will be serving in my stead day-to-day (with me always available and in the loop… perhaps just not ticking off every caption) for the next three months.

Janice Min Heralds 12.327 Million Monthly Uniques, Eight Promotions and Six New Hires

The memo today from editorial director Janice Min starts with the news that August was The Hollywood Reporter‘s biggest Web traffic month yet. A total of 12.327 million unique visitors came to the site per comScore, putting the publication fourth in its category behind IMDb, EW and TV Guide.

From there, it’s on to the news of THR‘s latest wave of promotions and hires:

Kimberly Nordyke has been promoted to Deputy Editor, THR.com. In her new role beginning today, Kimberly will oversee our news operation in the morning hours, working with our New York and foreign reporters, as well as doing longer-term planning for the site and and the digital rollout of major print projects and packages. Kimberly, who most recently was senior editor, has been with The Hollywood Reporter since 2000. She joined the staff of the magazine as a copy editor before segueing into the position of TV reporter. She writes a mean headline without ever losing her cool, knows the industry inside-out, and I am thrilled she is bringing her 360-degree expertise to daytime.

Hollywood Reporter Readies Russian Print and Web Editions

Following the lead of sister publication Billboard, which spun off a Russian edition in 2007, the Hollywood Reporter is set to launch a glossy Russian-language monthly print publication in March. To be followed in short order by companion website thehollywoodreporter.ru.

The investor group backing The Hollywood Reporter: Russian Edition is the same one that underwrote the aforementioned Billboard Russia and includes Studio Three T, the production facility of writer-director Nikita Mikhalkov (pictured). Mikhalkov competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival with Burn by the Sun 2 and received a special career achievement honor at the 2007 Venice International Film Festival.

The Russian editorial team will be guided from LA by editorial director Janice Min, creative director Shanti Marlar and international news editor Kevin Cassidy. From the press release going out today:

The Hollywood Reporter: Russian Edition represents the return of high quality field-reporting to the Russian entertainment market. We will offer readers a rare behind-the-scenes look into the Russian entertainment industry along with in-depth features and hard-hitting market analysis,” says THR: Russian Edition editor-in-chief Ivan Kudryavtsev.

THR Adds Associate Art Director

Ten years ago, Kyle Sackowski (pictured) graduated from the Indiana University with a degree in journalism, bolstered by an emphasis on graphic arts, photography and the Japanese language. Today, he begins his newest professional chapter as associate art director at The Hollywood Reporter after previous stints at the Orange County Register, the Press-Enterprise and South Bend Tribune.

Sackowski joins two other associate art directors on staff, Katherine Bryja and Ada Guerin, and will take orders from shared boss Shanti Marlar. The design portfolio slide show at his personal website begins with work he did for another magazine’s “The Greying of Oscar” feature. Good practice, no doubt, for his new gig.
