New York Times Names New Culture, Arts & Leisure Editors

The New York Times has named Danielle Mattoon culture editor and Sia Michel arts & leisure editor.

Mattoon was most recently travel editor, a role she has held since 2002. Michel has been with the Times since 2007. She most recently served as deputy arts & leisure editor. Scott Veale, whom Michel is succeeding, will be “tackling a new editing role,” according to a note from Jill Abramson, executive editor of the Times.

Hollywood, Meet the New York Times’ New Culture Editor

Nikki Finke was first on the west coast this morning to some major Grey Lady news: the appointment of Danielle Mattoon as culture editor and Sia Michel as editor for Arts & Leisure. As Finke points out, even though Hollywood does not read the paper nearly as much as it used to, the moves still put Mattoon at the top of the Tinseltown PR pitch-list.

Finke also reminds that this NYT news should have really come out before the Oscars:

Executive editor Jill Abramson‘s announcement today was nearly four weeks late according to her own timetable for naming a new culture editor. Then again, she has a lot on her plate because her publication is beset by financial problems, editorial buyouts, stiff competition, not to mention conservative critics who want to put what they see as the Liberal Paper Of Record out of business.

Sia Michel To Rock Times

Sia Michel, friend of 50 Cent and one-time Spin editor ousted during the magazine’s sale last year, is joining the New York Times as pop music editor. The internal memo via Gawker:

The departure of Tom Kuntz to the Week in Review created an opening in culture. I am pleased to report that Sia Michel will fill it, joining The Times as pop music editor. Sam Sifton introduces the newest addition to Culture.

Sia brings to The Times both the gifts of a writer and the strategic perspective of an editor. She has been laboring in the fields of freelance journalism for the past year, writing often and well for The Times, as both a critic and profilist.
