Sports Illustrated for Kids Seeks Stories on Young, Local Athletes

For sports writers looking to pitch to Sports Illustrated for Kids, their best bet at a byline might be finding a story in their own hometown. Instead of proposing a feature on a major league baseball player or big-name football star, freelancers should pitch the sports mag, whose target readers are boys ages 7 to 15, a profile of a star athlete on the local level.  Newly installed managing editor Mark Bechtel says:

If a freelancer says, ‘Hey, there’s a 13-year-old kid who is a great young basketball player, and he’s got some sort of charity that’s sending sports equipment to kids in under-developed areas’ — that’s something that we’re not going to know about [and would want to cover].

Freelancers should also send pitches to the mag’s digital component, SIKids.com. Online editor Dante Ciampaglia notes that the site is held to the same high standard of the print publication and wants stories that highlight “the fun side of sports as well as things like good sportsmanship.”

Bob Der, Veteran SI for Kids Editor, Departs

Bob Der, a veteran of Sports Illustrated for Kids, is leaving the magazine. The New York Post reports that Der will be replaced by Mark Bechtel, a senior editor at Sports Illustrated.

Der had been managing editor of SI for Kids for the past eight years. He was only the fourth managing editor in the magazine’s 25 year history.

Bechtel has been with Sports Illustrated for almost 20 years.

SIKidsSports Illustrated For Kids is all about the joy of being a sports fan. The pub’s target demographic are boys aged 7-14, with a love of sports and a will to read.

While a majority of the content is written by in-house staffers, editors are always willing to hear new ideas from freelancers. Local stories are in demand, as are articles focusing on a niche industry. There are a few key sections of the pub which are particularly freelance friendly:

The best place for freelancers to pitch is the feature well. “We’re looking for great ideas, interesting takes that would manifest as packages or features or profiles,” says managing editor Bob Der. Features run about 1,000 words, and packages with multiple components (say, a series of features with sidebars) can run from 2,000 to 4,000 words. Packages could be thematic, such as “athletes who give back” or “environmental conservation as it relates to sports.”
