LAT Columnist Says Writers Struck Out in MVP Voting

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Matt Kemp finished second in the National League MVP race Tuesday behind Milwaukee Brewers left fielder and former Granada Hills standout Ryan Braun.

Los Angeles Times columnist Bill Plaschke called out the Baseball Writers’ Assocation of America, who decide the MLB postseason honors, for not voting Kemp over Braun, despite a disappointing 82-79 record and finishing 11.5 games behind Arizona.

Due to a LAT policy, Plaschke wasn’t able to serve as one of the two designated voters from the local BBWAA chapter. But freelancer Dodger blogger Steve Dilbeck was able to vote and decided to go with Braun:

Los Angeles Times Reporter Wins Bob Hunter Award

Los Angeles Times sports reporter Steve Dilbeck was voted the winner of the Bob Hunter Award by his peers in the Baseball Writers’ Association of America’s Los Angeles-Anaheim chapter for his meritorious coverage of the sport over the years.

Dilbeck is the primary blogger of the LAT Dodgers blog. He spent seven years covering the Dodgers for the San Bernardino Sun and was eventually a columnist for the Daily News.

The award is named after Bob Hunter, a former baseball writer for the Herald Examiner and the Los Angeles Examiner.

Koufax Trumps Magic in LAT Sports Poll

Former Dodger lefty Sandy Koufax was the runaway winner in the Los Angeles Times‘ countdown of the 20 greatest local sports figures.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner received 57 more first-place votes than No. 3 Vin Scully, and 90 more than No. 2 Magic Johnson.

Steve Dilbeck explains why Koufax winning shouldn’t be a surprise to readers:

“He won three Cy Youngs, all unanimously. He pitched four no-hitters, one a perfect game. Was part of three World Series champions.

Westcoast Sports Associates to Honor Vin Scully

Los Angeles Dodgers play-by-play announcer Vin Scully was selected as the 2011 recipient of the Westcoast Sports Associates Roy Firestone Award.

The award is named after the former KCBS-TV sports anchor, who will emcee the Nov. 16 event and interview Scully, according to Steve Dilbeck of the LAT.

Past honorees of the award include John Wooden, Wayne Gretzky, Jerry West and Pete Carroll.

For hardcore Dodger fans that need their offseason fix of Scully, the event is open to the public for $300 a ticket.
