Party Photos: Celebrating The Holidays With Mediabistro

Last night, mediabistro.com kicked off the holiday party season with its own candy cane maritini-soaked shindig. We got to Tribeca Cinemas early, commandeered a big bowl of popcorn and snagged a spot at the bar, where we could get a good view of the party-goers on their way in.

Some of our fellow bloggers were also in attendance, in addition the event’s bubbly hostess, mediabistro.com’s senior editor Donya Blaze (left). TVNewser editors Chris Ariens and Kevin Allocca, as well as GalleyCat editor Jason Boog, were all there, mixing and mingling with the crowd.

TVNewser editor Kevin Allocca, Mediaite.com’s Steve Krakauer and TVNewser’s Chris Ariens

Celebrating The Launch Of WNBC’s New Local Lifestyle Show

On Monday night, we headed west to Hudson Terrace to join the festivities celebrating the launch of WNBC‘s new afternoon live local lifestyle show, “LX New York.”

The show debuted live on channel 4 at 5pm on Monday, with senior vice president of LX.TV Morgan Hertzan and on-air talent Sara Gore, Siafa Lewis, Michael Flocker, George Oliphant and Maria Sansone heading over to the party afterward to celebrate and sip Absolut cocktails on the open air roof deck.

Hertzan told us that he thought the first show went on without a hitch, even though launching a live show is always nerve-wracking. “Live is the only way to go,” he said.

We also learned that Gore, who appeared on “Today” Monday morning to promote “LX New York,” was a chef before she became the bubbly host that we know her to be today. When we asked her where she got the recipe for the steak she cooked with Al Roker that morning, she boasted, “It’s mine!” (Check out the video below.)

So what did Gore, who now hosts three LX.TV lifestyle shows, think of the “LX New York” premiere episode?

“There were a few things I wish had gone more smoothly,” she said. “But it was the first show and it was live, and now we know what we can work on.”

Also spotted in the crowd, Olivia Metzger of talent agency CAA and two former TVNewser editors, The New York Times‘ Brian Stelter and Mediaite.com TV editor Steve Krakauer.

Mediaite Launches To Server-Crashing Traffic

The hotly anticipated Mediaite.com, the media blog brainchild of consulting company Abrams Research, launched early this morning. The site, which has sections for TV, online and print media news and criticism in addition to columns from media heavy weights like former Us Weekly and Star editor-in-chief Bonnie Fuller and ex-Portfolio deputy editor Jim Impoco, was quickly inundated with readers furiously clicking — consequently giving visitors some viewing problems. (We couldn’t load the site while we were writing this post, although we got a glimpse earlier in the day.)

“We were getting an overload in simultaneous users trying to access the site,” explained Senior Editor Glynnis MacNicol, noting that problems started happening around 9 a.m. around the time people started getting to work. “While we were prepared for heavy traffic and had a back up CDN, we still managed to overload. Things are running right now, but slow for certain people. I think it also had to do with the type of traffic [we were getting]. People were flying around the site, spending [more time] and clicking on more pages.” They are working to correct the problems right now, MacNicol added.

Once visitors can access the site problem-free, the biggest draw to Mediaite will undoubtedly be its rankings of media pros. The ranks are broken down into categories: television anchors/hosts, TV reporters, media moguls, “TV Titans,” magazine editors, TV pundits, newspaper/online editors, radio hosts, TV execs, print/online reporters, print/online editors and “Magazine Titans.” Members of each group are ranked based on various factors such as ratings of their shows or circulation of their magazines, number of Twitter followers and the amount of “Buzz” on blogs or in print.

And what’s a birthday without something going horribly wrong?

This morning, TVNewser’s Steve Krakauer and FishbowlNY managing editor Rebecca Fox talk about last night’s Webby Awards, NBC’s Chuck Todd‘s new book about the Obama administration and Rupert Murdoch‘s thoughts about newspapers.

Steve and Rebecca were supposed to be joined by first time guest ABC’s Jake Tapper, but he spoke separately to Steve later today instead. They discussed Obama’s trip to the Middle East, which Tapper just returned from covering. Tapper let Steve in on some of the feelings about the president in the foreign press.

“President Obama and his press secretary Robert Gibbs have expressed a lot of irritation with the foreign press most recently, because they tend to focus on whether perceived slights that perhaps the chancellor of Germany or the president of France or whomever is feeling at that moment and the president and others in the White House tend to push back on that as silly,” Tapper explained. “But it’s not to say that these aren’t real feelings.”

Tapper also talked about covering the White House after the first 100 days, Chuck Todd’s book and working in the press pool. “It’s a very competitive environment, and we all are competing with each other in addition to working side by side with each other,” he said.

Walker and co-author Jess Todtfeld spent 24 hours giving interviews for 112 talk radio shows earlier this week in order to promote their book “TJ Walker’s Secret to Foolproof Presentations.”

Walker explained that the day-long event was an attempt to show authors and other public speakers how to be successful when appearing on talk shows.

“What we didn’t try to do was to be interesting and different and say something interesting in every single interview,” Walker said. “The big blunder most authors make when they go on [talk shows] is they want to be so interesting that they try to cover every single thing they learned in their book. The problem is, that is too much and if people hear you in your interviews they don’t remember you because everything was just said once.”

Walker and Todtfeld emphasized specific tips during their 24 hours of interviews. They instructed people to “focus on your audience not on yourself” and video record speaking presentations “until you like how you come across,” Walker said.

“Speaking is not a talent you are born with, it’s something anyone can learn to do,” he added.

Walker is also giving away lots of free books in order to raise awareness. A free digital version can be found at TJWalker.com.

Also discussed on the menu: Glenn Beck‘s success and What We Learned This Week.

The Morning Media Menu podcast today features Ben Lerer, CEO of Thrillist. He spoke with Steve Krakauer and Rebecca Fox about how the email newsletter geared towards guys has expanded its reach — it now covers a dozen markets — despite the economy.

Lerer, who will be a speaker at Mediabistro Circus in New York later this week, said Thrillist was lucky to have “hit its stride” just as the economy started to trend downward.

“A lot of advertisers had just been closing their first deals with us [when the economy started to trend downward] and, if they’ve seen success, have been able to measure the value of working with us,” he said. “And we’ve been lucky enough that they’ve been coming back and continuing to spend even while their budgets have been getting smaller.”

Lerer also touted the benefits of using parties and events to reach out to new readers and advertisers. “We try to keep is stupid simple over here,” he said. “We have two goals. One is to build our audience with the right kind of guys and the other is to sell against that audience.” Events, he added “easily checks off those two boxes.”

Lerer also discussed challenges he’s faced as a young CEO and his take on Jay Leno‘s revolutionary move to primetime.

Help Get WebNewser’s Steve Krakauer Out Of Here

Despite what the title of this post suggests, we are quite fond of our colleague from WebNewser and TVNewser, Steve Krakauer. So, when we heard he was competing in the “I’m a Blogger…Get Me Out of Here!” contest, we wanted to help him out.

The winner of the contest, which is part of promotional efforts for NBC‘s upcoming reality show “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!”, will get sent to Costa Rica to blog during the show. And since Steve professes that this is his “lifelong dream,” we had to do our part and vote. And you should, too!

Here’s a little bit more info about the contest, from its Web site:

We pit bloggers against each other in a contest to see who can survive to the final round, and win a trip to live blog behind the scenes at the “I’m a Celebrity” set in Costa Rica!

Three rounds will present our bloggers with challenges about bugs, beauty, being a celebrity and surviving the jungle. And you decide who makes it to the next round.

Check out Steve’s first post about bullet ants (no thank you) and botflies (yuck). We were worried that, were he to win, Steve might encounter these scary creepy crawlers when he gets to Costa Rica. But thankfully, bloggers don’t get to go outside much. But unfortunately, we think Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt are more scary than bullet ants anyway.
