Behold… Brigitte Bardot

In a recent FishbowlNY “Lunch” column, Diane Clehane mentioned that PR maven Catherine Saxton was headed to St. Tropez for parties aboard Denise Rich‘s yacht and at another location hosted by Ivana Trump. That, ladies and gentlemen – as Clehane duly noted – is what they call “the life.”

While we can’t on this muggy Friday afternoon give you the south of France, we can offer the next best thing. The picture below, of Brigitte Bardot in her St. Tropez prime, is the latest to be shared by Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Steven Rea as part of his ongoing Tumblr and book project Hollywood Rides a Bike.

Rides a Bike Blog Now a Book

FishbowlLA was the first media outlet to report about the wonderful Tumblr blog powered by Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Steven Rea. Under the self-explanatory title Rides a Bike, he posts vintage shots of Tinseltown movie stars on two wheels.

Much media coverage followed and now there is a companion book from Angel City Press, publishing in the third week of February. The 160-page tome–which has added the word “Hollywood” to the title–contains 125 different images, some of which were generously provided by collector Howie Cohen, whose family used to run a group of bike shops that serviced the studios.

Rea will be signing copies at Vroman’s in Pasadena and Book Soup in West Hollywood during his upcoming media tour. He tells FishbowlLA that although it’s hard for him to pick favorites from the book, a couple of images immediately come to mind. One of Rita Hayworth with Glenn Ford, and another that is more tragically tinged.

“The photo of Susan Peters is beautiful,” he says. “She’s stopped on her bike on the Palisades in Santa Monica. She was Oscar-nominated for Random Harvest and being groomed by MGM for stardom, but then had a terrible accident.”

Trailer for The Roommate Doles Out Misguided Brotherly Love

It’s not uncommon for Hollywood studios to tease upcoming movies with scenes that don’t make it into the final product. But Philadelphia Inquirer film critic Steven Rea has come across a version of this bait-and-switch that is a little odder than usual.

For some reason, at one minutes and 22 seconds into a trailer for the upcoming February 4th Sony-Screen Gems thriller The Roommate, a shot of Philadelphia’s City Hall is shown. Even though the film strictly sourced Culver City and environs for its college campus. Reports Rea:

Roommate director Christian E. Christiansen responded via Facebook to a query about what our city’s landmark was doing in a film that was shot in Southern California. “No, unfortunately, it’s just used for the trailer and not a part of the film…”

Critic Collects Movie Stars on Bikes

This past Thanksgiving, Philadelphia Inquirer movie critic Steven Rea launched a whimsical blog at Tumblr. Titled “Rides a Bike,” it honors those halcyon days when movie stars rode around Hollywood backlots on bicycles.

Many of the photos depict timeless pairings, such as Audrey Hepburn with her dog Mr. Famous or Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth riding tandem. There’s also the somewhat incongruous two-wheeled taming of men of action like Sean Connery and Steve McQueen.
