Being forcibly unplugged on a concert or TV performance stage. At the Super Bowl, no less!

Are hardcore fans buying Flea’s account of the NFL’s unbending halftime show live-performance rules and the band’s reasons for going along with them? Well, it depends which reader comment response(s) you peruse. When you’ve been covering the sport of football for as long as Berry Tramel has, the challenge – and fun – is coming up with new ways of writing about the same old thing. This morning, post-Seattle Bowl I, he succeeds admirably by hanging the first portion of his column on a word coined in 1754 by British author Henry Walpole.

The only thing that could possibly raise the ante of this incredible two-minute Savannah, GA area TV spot is if Matthew McConaughey had done the voiceover honors. Who knows, given the life story of the guy responsible for the ad, we may all be watching said indie flick or HBO movie a few years from now.

When listening to, as we have at various points this week, in-town programs like The Dan Patrick Show and Jay Mohr Sports, it’s easy to forget how crowded the radio coverage galley for a Super Bowl has become. For that, we turn to Ken Fang‘s summary at AwfulAnnouncing:

There are 104 stations broadcasting live from this year’s Super Bowl Radio Row in New York… In the massive Sheraton Times Square Meeting Room, tables are set up from front to back with radio stations, all broadcasting simultaneously. Pam Oliver Revisits Her Meme-rable Hair Day

Philadelphia Daily News sportswriter Jenice Armstrong has today what for many will be an essential piece of Super Bowl lead-up reading. A chat with Fox News sideline reporter Pam Oliver about the reaction to the latter’s now infamous NFC Championship hair.

Renée Fleming Comes to Super Bowl XLVIII with Full Playbook of ‘Kudos’

ReneeFlemingPicOpera superstar Renée Fleming, who will perform the national anthem at MetLife Stadium on Sunday accompanied by the New Jersey Symphony and 32 standout U.S. military singers, needs no introduction. However, we have to applaud her for one of the liveliest website “clippings” sections we’ve recently come across.

In terms of both navigation and curation, Fleming’s “Kudos” tab is a breezy blast, bracketed by an April 2013 New York Times article and trio of November 2007 New York newspaper reviews of La Traviata. There’s much more to savor in-between, from how Fleming helped organize a one-night comedic event last winter at Chicago’s Second City to the way she took hold of an Albert Hall “Proms” series in the fall of 2010. From Ivan Hewett‘s excerpted Telegraph write-up:

Lupica has no problem terming #48 a “New York Super Bowl.” In fact, when he ran into Seattle TV reporter Eric Johnson in Times Square (re-GPSed starting today with Super Bowl Boulevard) and framed the big game as such, the Pacific Northwest visitor couldn’t agree more. From Lupica’s piece:

Austrian Journo Dresses Up as Mozart for Super Bowl Media Day

Rather, we’re here to let you know that one Phillip Hajszan (pictured) is today making stateside headlines for having dressed up, at Super Bowl Media Day, as a guy who could diagram an intricate symphony. We’re not trying to be mean; but perhaps this desperate fourth-and-wrong ploy was designed to improve the quantity and quality of the Austrian journalist’s personal-account Twitter followers. From a USA TODAY write-up:

In his white wig, many mistook Hajszan for Benjamin Franklin. “That is what people keep saying. I say, no, I’m Mozart, Mozart, Mozart!” said Hajszan, who came to Media Day last year garbed in Austrian lederhosen.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria.

Didn’t Like That Sexist Super Bowl Ad? There’s an App for That

NotBuyingItAppRemember last year’s Super Bowl hashtag #NotBuyingIt? Per Clare O’Connor‘s Forbes item, it was borne out of some public resentment towards – mostly – a 2013 GoDaddy spot.

A year later, there’s a free iPhone 5/iPad/iPod App with the same name, designed to make it easier for viewers of Super Bowl XLVIII to call personal fouls on Madison Avenue:

“We’re calling out brands using offensive, genedered, hyper-sexualized images in their advertising,” said Imran Siddiquee of The Representation Project, the non-profit behind acclaimed Sundance documentary Miss Representation and the brainchild of filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
